I had an abortion almost 3 weeks ago. After the first day, I didn't have any other bleeding. On the fourth day following the procedure, I started my birth control pill, and I was taken to the hospital for lower abdominal pain. It turned out to be a minor UTI, and I was given some pain killers and another antibiotic to take along with the one that was given to me after the abortion. A day or two after being on the antibiotic and the birth control, I started bleeding lightly, and after roughly 24 hours, it turned into a brown, odorless discharge, which subsided after about 3 or 4 days. I had my follwo up appointment on Thursday, just 2 days ago, and was told everything that I was experiencing was normal, and I was given the okay to return my normal activities. After the appointment, I went swimming, and Friday (last night) I began having cramps as if I were about to start my period. I did in fact start bleeding, a lighter flow than usual, but today it has stopped again, but I am still slightly cramping. Just wondering if this is normal due to the birth control.

Do you know if they did a DNC along with the abortion? As this could be the reason for the intermittent bleeding! From what others have mentioned - after abortions - sounds VERY normal to me! As it was a shock to your uterus - and it doesn't like shocks, and causes havoc! Just keep an eye on it, and if you really start clotting or are in pain then you need to go back to the hospital! Also many women have mentioned delayed or wonky periods after UTI's and antibiotics - I think it is more about your body fighting the infection than dealing with letting you have a normal period! Just try and take it easy - good sleep, healthy food etc, and within a week if it hasn't improved phone your doctor OK? Good luck and health!
