I have had an implanon implant for 27 months. For the first 18 months I had very short almost nonexistant periods. Gradually they have gotten heavier and they now last up to three weeks. My "normal" cycle right now is 3 weeks on and 2 weeks off of my period.
If I had known this in the beginning I would not have gotten this implant. This is not the worst part tho. I gained about 30 pounds in the first 6-8 months. I had the appetite of a 16 year old athlete but unfortunately I didn't have that lifestyle. In an effort to get things under control I started dieting and exercising. I haven't been perfect but I have never had such a hard time losing weight. I really feel like this implant is working against me. I have no energy b/c of the heavy bleeding. I DO NOT recommend this, but one night I tried to cut the implant out myself. Please do not try this. It didn't work and now I have a nasty scar.
If you are considering this method of birth control please do your research and remember me.

This will tell you important information about an implant.
Your periods may be irregular after the implant for a while.
It can totally stop your period, or you maay experience small spots of blood .
It can change your mood, give you achne or reduce achne, it may make your periods heavier and painfuller. There are loads of side effects, it is 99 percent effective in birth control, but it is not agianst sexually transmitted diseases. If you have heavey and painful periods, and are concidering to get the implant the best thing i reccomend is to take the pill for a while to sort out your periods BEFORE getting the implant, this may help.

I have had my implanon for about 7 1/2 months now. I rarely spotted for the first 5 months. I would go a whole month with only 5-6 days of spotting (not in a row). But, about 5 weeks ago: I started my period and had cramps and hot flashes, and now its been 29 days and I am still on it. It is not heavy or anything. I do have to wear tampons everyday. If I do not put one on its more blood and darker bleeding, if I do, then I barely get anything on the tampon (its there just not alot). I am guessing I need to buy some condoms so I can be intimate with my husband without making a mess. I still have sex, just not that much. The cramps come and go throughout each week. They are not too bad. I still am glad I got the implant. I have 5 children and 4 are under age 4. Two of them came while I was on the pill so I had to do something. And with this, I can be mostly worry free about pregnancy. A whole lot better than the IUD. That thing caused me to have contractions 10 weeks after delivery and my cousin had to have an emergency hysterectomy because of getting it. So I will deal with the bleeding on this one.

Hi there
I have been reading forums like these recently after having my implanon taken out after 3 years, and wondering when I'd get a period.
My experience, first year, no bleeding at all, then 2nd year, was bleeding every 2nd week. Doctor put me back on the pill as well as the implanon, but just to take it every other day just to top up my levels, this cured the problem, no bleeding for remaining 2 years of implanon. No effect on weight, skin etc, and no other monthly symptoms - It was great.
The insertion and removal were painless, I'd recommend it.
Got it taken out 7.5 weeks ago, and yesterday started bleeding again. Taking no contraception to clear my body out for a few months before trying to conceive - Doctor recommends this to help avoid a chemical miscarriage - where there are too many chemicals in your system.
Now taking pre-conception vitamins and will think about trying later in the year. Fingers crossed.

Hi all, I had my implanon put in just over a year ago and in the second week i had some very light spotting but other then that i have been period free since. But about a month and a half ago i was really sick and got my periods for ten days and in the last few weeks i've had them twice! I used to have them every 2 to 3 weeks before i got the bar. they only started again since i got really sick so im wondering if its because my system is not up to par yet or the bar is messing with my system

In regards to the above quote, I have had exactly the same problem. I have been on the implant for about a year and have never had a period and then I got a cold of some sort and had some bleeding which lasted 2-3 days. Its been about a week since the last bleed and now I am bleeding again. Not sure whats going on but dont want to trouble the doctor if this is just a common occurance, Just want to know if the implant is still working and how long this irregularity will last as it is really annoying!

Hi,
I am 20 years old and have had the implant in now for 2 years and 4 months.
At the beginning i got the usual side effect of bleeding for the first few months, that stopped and i didnt have a period for 2 years, no spotting or anything which was amazing!!
But last month i came on randomly, it wasnt heavy, and was mainly the brown old blood.
This lasted for about a week and half then stopped, i didnt think anything of it to be honest.
Then last week i came on again, same sort of stuff but this time it has got heavier and turned into blood.
Im finding this really strange as i didnt have a period for 2 years, so can the implant be wearing off??
Has anyone else had something like this, did it turn out to be serious?
I dont use any other protection along side my implant as i have a long term boyfriend, and we both got checked out and the beginning of out relationship to be on the safe side, but could i have got pregnant and had a miscarrige :-(
Please can someone help me?

I feel worried also! Over a year I can't believe that! I'm almost going for two months without my period and lately i've been SO hungry. I'm scared to even get a pregnancy test. I've searched all over the internet to see if this is normal and i've read that sometimes your period will go away. But how long is safe? Other than that I have absolutely no side effects. I have no clue what to do.

Hello,
I have had the implanon for over 7 months now. Recently, I had a CT scan to check for lymphoma (all was good) but the radiologist saw a large cyst on my ovary, so my doc ordered a pelvic ultrasound. The radiologist read the cyst as a corpus luteum (yellow body) which is the remaining tissue after an ovum is released. This concerned me because, on implanon, I should not be ovulating. The only peace of mind the doctor gave me was that the progestin also effects the cervical mucous, so the sperm probably couldn't survive. I was having monthly bleeding on the implanon- and now am 5 days late. Does anyone know how common it is for it to simply not work? Or not work 100% of the time?
Thanks

im the same as most of the above, periods all over the place etc, someone told me that taking the pill for 2 months like you normally would (3 weeks on 1 off) would regulate it. has any1 else heard this or know if its true?

I've had the exact same thing happen after having it for 4 monthes, plus my period has been thick and dark brown and have had it for 22 days now. I'm 19 and absolutely cannot get used to this but I also don't want to take it out because I never used to remember to take my pill on time and I don't want to get pregnant. Last month I had it for 16 days and it's like I never have time for intimacy due to having my period all the time so it's almost like it's an abstinence rod placed in my arm??? I still want to be able to be intimate with my fiance (boyfriend of 4 years). Also it's making me anemic so I'm tired and lethargic 24/7 because of it. advice?
