Hello,

I am 16 and I have had the Implanon for over 1 year and 6 months. When I first got the Implanon my bleeding was really bad, I felt light headed and sick a lot. (My periods were very irregular when they first started getting them, I barely bled at all!) The people at Womens Health put me on the the pills called Orthocyclin and another one called something else... I was on 3 birth controls at the same time! After about two or three months my bleeding stopped completely. The ladies at Womens Health took me off of the pills but kept me on the Implanon. My periods have stopped completely and it's been over 1 year since I've had one. I'm not sure if this is normal and I get really scared when I wonder if I'm pregnant. My mother had two still borns because of high blood pressure and something being wrong with her system. I really need help! If anyone has some information I would really appreciate it!

Hi,
I got mine in Nov 2010. Its been about 8 months now. The first couple months my periods were as regular as always. Then a couple months ago I would have multiple periods in a month. But for the past 3 months I have had no periods. I have taken a few pregnancy tests and all say I am not preg. I also visited a doctor and was told I am not. My doctor says that this is a regular reaction. She also said your periods could be effected even more depending on ur stress levels and multiple other things. You should be just fine. It is a hassle but it is better then an unexpected preg. in the long run.. You should be just fine :)

I have almost had mine for a year and have maybe only had 6 weeks free from my period. I'm always bleeding. Then when I am not bleeding i will start when I have intercourse. My doctor first said my bleeding would stop after three months, and it didn't so I called her and she said after six months. Then I went in for my check up at six months and was still bleeding. She then told me to hold out until the one year mark which is in July 2012

I'm 20 and had Implanon 3 months ago.

First period was kinda pinkish, but turned brown. I had it for EIGHT days. Not good.
Second period was just light brown and lasted 4 days.
It's now the night before I should be getting my next one, but am now thinking that it might not come. I've scared myself in the past into thinking I was pregnant, as I felt bloated and my boobs were sore.

However, I have found out that this is all very normal. Your body tricks you into thinking it is pregnant.

On another forum, someone wrote:

"The implanon is not foolproof but is very very very effective (effective 999 out of 1000).

Implanon releases etonogestrel which is a progestogen (This means it mimicks the hormone progesterone in the body).

As some of you would know one of the reasons for a high progesterone level is prgnancy, progesterone is the hormone that supports gestation and foetus development.

The etonogestrel gets picked up in the blood and the brain reads it as progesterone. When the brain reads high progesterone levels it thinks the body is pregnant.

For this reason most women on the implant experience amenorrhoea (no period (YAY!)).

Because the brain thinks it's pregnant the body starts to get tricked too. Ever heard of a hysterical pregnancy? When the brain thinks it's pregnant, the body can be pretty convincing with breast tenderness, weight gain, pica, nausea, back pain etc.

As for irregular periods, periods of spotting and brown periods or brown spotting...completely normal. The menstrual cycle while using implanon is very hectic, most of the time women won't menstruate but fluctuations can be caused by stress, obesity and diet, just like a normal period.

As for the brown? It is also completely normal. Many women will skip their regular period and a few days later get a brown discharge, the brown discharge is usually pretty light, lasts longer and is a bit smelly. The period is brown because it is old blood. The endometrium died but didn't fall away like normal (This kind of period is often accompanied by a lack of cramping, because the cramping is what 'shakes' the endometrium off the uteral walls).

For those worried about a sudden change in symptoms after extended use of the implant, no need to worry. The levels of etonogestrel released in the blood throughout the Implanon's life are not constant. The levels change every year (approximately), so sudden changes in symptoms aren't uncommon. It is recommeded that you wait 4-5 to ride it out, but if you are still uncomfortable you should talk to your doctor.

If you a really concerned about pregnancy consult your GP and get a blood test done.

I do have to advise you however that if you are pregnant under the implant (as unlikely as it is) to be wary of abdominal cramping as ectopic pregnancies are likely and the last thing you want to do is lose a uterine tube."

I reckon...if you're really worried, go do a blood test and get it checked out.

I've got the exact same thing as you.

So i'm presuming, yes it is normal.

I've had the implant for coming up to three years in november this year, and for the first 8 months or somy periods were totally random, really annoying.. .up to the beginning of this year i had no periods.. and then they suddenly came back in january or february..

but now they last for 5-7 days and are pretty regular... but at random dates.. i had a period just over one week ago... and now i have another period... so i don't know what's happening, it's really annoying.

I am worried that I may have had a miscarriage, and did not know it. I had the implanon a little over a year now. I hadnt had my period since March 9. I had gotten intimate on  March 18 and no protection was used. From April to September, I did not have a period but was in severe pain and felt flutters from time to time. In june, I had gotten sick from drinking a daiquiri which is not normally because I only drunk half. My breasts had nipple discharge when stimulated that was clear, thick and sweet. My left side of my stomach received the most pain and was bigger than my right side. The positioning of my stomach went from box-shaped to very round especially at the bottom of my stomach. In November, I bleed but it was heavy and thick. And since October and November, I have not had any pain, flutters or bleeding. I still have the same nipple discharge but doctors only excuse it was fibrocystic breast changes. Could this have well been a miscarriage?
