Well Bingo you have described my same complaint but when I lay down and turn toward my left side is when I hear the Morse Code. I have had it for 5 months. I did go to the ENT and had my ear washed and sucked out with no relief. If I lay on my left side and put my arm over my head I cannot hear it and can usually go to sleep. If I turn on my right side I have no problem. I too had been taking antibiotics for several bouts of diverticulitis and then this began and has never went away. I have tried all that you have done and now the ENT says use Nasacort spray 2 sprays both nostrils once a day for a month and then see if that helps. Doing that with a sinus infection now for a week. We will see. I feel your frustration but glad to know it's not just in my head!!

Try a good neck massage. I get the thumping only in my right ear and its tight neck muscles forcing veins pumping blood to resound against the audial nerve. Any massage therapist would be able to help. Concentrate on the front of the neck on the side you are hearing the thumping. Works for me everytime.

I've just starting hearing this clicking or tapping sound myself but in my left ear. Today makes two days and it's noticeable while I'm sitting watching tv or reading or working on my computer. It's definitely not "ringing" - it's clicking or tapping for sure... everything that I've looked at online points to muscle spasms. I guess I'll just have to try and relax and hope the spasms stop soon.

After many years of suffering with this condition, I finally seem to have found a remedly: two allergy sprays; Flonase and Astelin, which are both available as generic, two puffs of each spray in each nostril. You have to keep your head down when inhaling the sprays

I also have tapping sometimes and discovered it is worse lying down and it stopped completely when I jammed my finger in hard. So I stuff a small ball of tissue in as far as I can. Seems to work! No idea why.

Glad I'm not the only one !!! But to be fair I have tinnitus anyway so I guess I see them as linked and whilst the tinnitus in constant the tapping comes and goes

Oh my God! I've just Googled this because I've had this weird kind of clicking/tapping in my left ear for about a month now, usually late evening and my biggest fear is that it's some kind of insect! Makes me feel absolutely sick! Thank goodness I live in Germany and can make an appointment at the ENT immediaely - I will be ringing first thing in the morning! I'm just trying not to think about what could be in my ear. :(

Sorry, but I don't think it is tinnitus. There is a problem with the inner ear. I have what you are having with my right ear. After researching, I have found that the constant clicking is actually a spasm of an inner ear muscle: Tensor Tympani Muscle Spasms. Looks like you can try 400 mg of Magnesium Oxide...that might help. If not, surgery is the only thing left. Guess I've just gotten used to it. Considering the surgery though.

yes 'morse code tapping" is correct. Tinnitus is something else more like the continuous annoying noise locusts make. I have both and I wonder if the tapping, only in my right ear, affects balance because I have to be careful not to make a sharp turn or direction when I walk or I feel I might fall. Of course I'm also old LOL

The more code is apparently a muscle next to the ear that twitches because of magnesium deficiency it helped me quite instantly with my "morse code ear"

I suffered a mild concussion to the left side of my head a month ago. I recently developed the tapping you described, also in my right ear. (Just 3-4 days ago). I thought it might have been from my head injury but when you mentioned taking Sudafed and benadryl, it made me remember that I had just started taking Zyrtec D for my seasonal allergies about 6 ago. Now I am wondering if the decongestants are the cause? I don't want to suffer with a stuffy nose for the next month but, niether do I want this tapping to continue. I have taken Zyrtec D before (every spring and fall for many years) and have never had this problem. I am also concerned about ototoxicity. Could the decongestant actually be damaging my ears?
Have you found out anything new?
