I am having problems with my periods. For the last three months I have had some prolonged bleeding and also bleeding that didn’t seem to be menstrual. I mean, it did look like a period but my periods are regular and this one wasn’t. I talked to my best friend and she told me her sister has these polyps in her uterus and is also having additional bleeding. Should I visit a gynecologist? What kind of tests will I need to undergo? Thank you

You may have polyps. I also had irregular bleeding, when I was diagnosed with uterine polyps. The bleeding occurs because the polyps dangle from their stalks and irritate the surrounding tissue, which causes the tissue to rub off, exposing tiny blood vessels, which then bleed. I had to undergo a sonohysterogram, which is a water ultrasound. The doctor inserted a few drops of sterile water into the uterus through the vagina. After this, the uterine opens and a doc can see if there are polyps hanging. He was telling me what he was doing, this is why I know. But, I think that most of the doctors use hysteroscope to look inside the uterus. Good luck!
