my daughter is pregnant with her first child, we figure she is about 9 wks, she went for her first ultrasound and we saw the baby on the moniter and it looked like all the ones we looked up on the internet, but there was no heartbeat... the doctor basicaly told her the baby wasnt alive, to come back in five days for another ultrasound and pushed us out the door. we dont understand. she has not had any cramping , bleeding or pain, it has been three days since her first ultrasound. she is still having all symptoms of being pregnant. we have looked up on the internet and alot of reports say sometimes u dont hear a heartbeat until the 11th wk... also he should have taken blood work to check her hcg level, he did none of this.  what should we do?

Hi Carla,

Sometimes you don't see the heartbeat early and a repeat test is done a week or so later to check.  That part of your visit is fairly common.  What the doctor said afterwards is not.

Was it the doctor or a technician that performed the test?

I wouldn't be overly concerned about not taking blood.  They can see the fetus and gauge its development.

As hard as it is, wait this out.  She may also consider finding another pre-natal doctor that has a better bed side manner.

Hang in there.  Good luck to you both.  Please keep us updated on how she's doing.

The technician did the ultrasound and couldn't find a heatbeat so she went & told the doctor. He never looked at the ultrasound photos or my daughter. He just brought us in a room and told us that. We are trying to get a new doctor. But thank you, we will keep you updated.
