I had my tonsils out 4/10 and they gave me a soda in recovery at the hospital so they must not be that bad for you. I've tried a couple of times since then to drink them and it is painful (best when warm and flat) as I'm a fizzy drinker too!

I am 26 and just had my tonsils out.

It is day 2 now and I feel little pain. I am a bit tired and cannot talk properly but I can pretty much do anything else. I have been taking paracetamol for pain. I thought I would be far sicker than I am. Here are some tips for people having the operation.

1. When I came out of the anesthesia I asked for a pain killer, this was a mistake because it made me a bit sick and I almost threw up.

2. I found drinking water really hard but anything warm like soup was very easy to eat and even southed the throat. Cold things seemed to contract the muscles in the neck and cause more pain.

3. I had no visitors because no family are here. I think this was good because I didn't talk to anyone and instead wrote my requests on a piece of paper. Talking is really hard after the operation and if you force it I think you will cause more damage.

4. I was producing a lot of saliva. Instead of swallowing it, which really hurt, I instead spat into tissues. I went through about 8 boxes of tissues but think it helped the healing process. You can also cough up mucus that has accumulated in the throat into the tissue.

5. Sleeping was sort of difficult because my mouth would fill with saliva. Maybe put tissues or a towel on the pillow that you can dribble into.

Really, this operation is not that bad. I think some people have such problems because they drug themselves up on pain killers and then their body does not know when it is straining itself or not so they cause more body damage.

I am now on day 5 post op tonsillectomy and my god I am in sooooo much pain I am considering going to A and E. I got up in the middle of the night to eat ice cream and my throat felt like it was burning it is horrendous.

I cant sleep as my neck and jaw are hurting I am eating although its very painful and I am just eating soup but im getting bored of that and the weight is dropping off not good!

I have a disgusting taste in my mouth and not very nice breath! I would rather have just put up with tonsilitou every few months rather than this I didnt realise it would be this painful also am suffering with a really bad cough which is obviously hurting my throat when I cough and my tongue keeps bleeding along with the corner of my mouth!

Honestly how long is this pain going to last?

I was lucky enough to have a doctor who had his tonsils out at 25 and really can sympathize with his patients. He said really do not be afraid to medicate. If it hurts, take more meds. He also said really keep hydrated, and try to eat. You may lose 10-15lbs, but you really should put something in your stomach with all the meds your taking. Otherwise you might end up vomiting a few times one day then stuck with diarrhea immediately following.

I hope everyone is doing well.

Definitely eat SOMETHING with your pain medications. I had my tonsils taken out July 15 and today is hte 26th. The first 5 days all I had was Gateorade and my medications. The steroids I was given for the swelling caused massive gas and acid buildup in my stomach because there was no food and I ended up vomiting for 5 hours straight (clearly nothing but liquid and bile). I ended up in the ER extremely dehydrated, they had to give me three different IV fluid bags before discharging me. The friction from my upchuck relflex has also delayed my healing. Do EVERYTHING your physician tells you to!
I have found Cocoa Wheats and Cream of Wheats (cooled) to be the best things to eat.

Hi everyone,

This past week has been a complete and utter nightmare. I have thrown up everyday pretty much after I try to eat anything. I was admitted into the hospital on day 5 for pain. It hurts to talk, to swallow, to drink, to eat etc. I've lost 10 pounds. This is the worst experience I have ever been through in my life. I'm 20 years old, so I figured it wouldn't be that bad. BUT it it's horrible. Does anyone have advice how to handle this pain and discomfort?

hi! I just turned 18 and got my tonsils taken out on the 26th, so I don't know if it's my day 3 or 4 today.. Is it possible for pain to worsen?? I mean I thought day 1 was the worst just cause everything was new that was happening.. but I got used to it by the second day and it seemed like the pain was slightly curbed and i could actually eat some mashed potatoes and tuna.
But NOW, it hurts to swallow, whereas yesterday I had no trouble drinking water! I also saw that there was one little red spot in the patch of white, do you think that could be a sign of infection?? My dad told me not to wear my retainers, but they wouldn't be a reason for an infection to come about would it..?

The older the worse it is!!!I am 37 and on day 9. Day 2 I was back in the hospital due to the pain meds not working. I have a high tollerence for pain meds. I was admitted for 3 days on IV meds and fluids. Went home on percocet. Was back in the ER on day 7 from dehydration and vomitting. I only stayed to get to bags of fluids in and some pain meds. I ate 2 tbl spoons of mashed potatoes and I felt like I was swallowing glass. I would rather give birth than go through this again. Hope others do better then I have. I am at the end of my rope!!

I am 30 yr old male.
I'm going to have my surgery on Thur Oct 2nd. I admit I am scared as hell bc not only and i having my tonsils removed but I'm having my Uvala cut in half and also getting a Radio Frequency Base of Tongue also done (helps keep the lower part of my tongue down to increase my airway passage). Now the first thing that comes to mind is getting thru security at the airport, will they do a cavity search bc not to many people hear someone say I have a chip on my tongue so I wont snore. Well if anyone has any suggestions or thoughts they can give me on what to expect or avoid please do so.

beware of day 5 and 6. sure enough on day 6 i felt i was "well" enough to go to an important class at school. HUGE mistake got home from school and the bleeding began. rushed to the ER to get coderized, again. now i am drenching my throat with propel and water, icing my neck, and peeing every 45 minutes (it sucks especially at night). thinking you are worse than you really are will help. im sure in a week or two i will be glad i had the surgery.

I had my tonsils out today. :-( Not too bad yet but am sure it will be worse tommorrow. I was thinking about when I can go out and drink as well. I am 24. I also have medical background and have come to this conclusion. Beer and wine are made of yeast and the open sores in the mouth would cause a nasty yeast infection. oral thrush. gross! wait 2 weeks.

take your pain meds AS PERSCRIBED and you should have a better buzz than your friends anyway. Dont drive.

I got mine out yesterday. I'm taking a liquid form of hydrocodone. It's only lasting 2 - 2 1/2 hours. Feeling better now. Got up every two hours last night. Hopefully tonight I can sleep longer. My husband had been my angel throughout this. Thank God no fever, no bleeding, but I'm not eating at all. I've had a total of 5 popsicles since yesterday. I'm drinking a bit of water. The pressure from my ears hurts tremendously. Is anyone finding it really hard to swallow???? I am I hope this is normal.
