Hi I had my appendix out last February. I had pain for 7 months following surgery on right side at belly button level. I describe my pain as if someone rubbed sand paper on my intestines and then poured on orange juice.
I recently had ultrasound which showed fatty liver and small gallstones. Yesterday I had upper GI which was awful. Will wait results. Funny thing is that the pain went away in the last few weeks but now I have been getting pain on my lower left side. Sometimes I know family and friends must think I am making this all up.

Hello,

I have read most of the posts about this subject. I can't believe that so many people are feeling the same thing as me. In November 2007 I also had an appendectomy. I did not have any traditional symptoms (I had no nausea, vomiting, mild temperature-I was walking around joking with the doctors and nurses) and they really didn't take me seriously until they did the operation...it was huge and I have a disgusting 2" scar above my belly button and two smaller marks around my side (it was laproscopic).

After the surgery, I continued to have pain and actually developed more symptoms...increased abdominal pain, headaches, ovarian "cysts" (they haven't gone away), unusual menstrual cycles. Ten months after the surgery, my doctors still don't believe me and say to wait it out. But the only thing I can think of is this surgery. Before I was in pretty much perfect health. Sometimes I wonder if maybe the surgeon nicked an ovary or other organ???

Anyway, I am glad to know I am not alone. If you have any comments about this, I will check back here. Thanks all! You have helped me know I'm not crazy!

I have my appendix taken out just over 2 years ago. For some time now I really have be having sharp pain where the appendix was and where I now have a 2 inch scar. I couldn't take the pain anymore so I went to the doctor knowing that something had to be wrong, but all the doctors treated me like I was being a baby. They did a few tests, made me take some pain killers that didn't do anything for the pain. After waiting all day they sent me home and told me nothing was wrong. The pains seem to be getting worse and knowing that doctors aren't going to do anything makes me feel hopeless.

I realize this thread is somewhat old, but I'm hoping to get some replies or something...

I had my appendix removed in August 2006, I was 20. I had been partying alot before, and had a stomach ache for about a week, and couldn't poop, but I figured that was due to my drinking. Well one night the pain got so bad I was shaking, and couldn't walk. I had a friend drive me to the E.R, where they ran some tests and told me I'd need to have my appendix removed.

They told me they would do the laproscopic appendectomy, as it was less invasive and would leave less scarring. They went in, attempted the surgery but couldn't complete it, and had to cut me open to do a "open" appendectomy, (I guess thats what they call the regular kind). My belly button has been sensitive ever since (from the scar), and I've had pain in my lower right abdomen, right about where the scar is.

Pain will come and go, but sometimes its sharp, and sometimes its not. It usually gets worse if I'm hungry, right after I eat, and right before and after bowels.

I also suffer from wicked bad menstrual cramps, and have noticed that the pain is terrible right under the scar when I am cramping.

I haven't been to a doctor since the appointment after the surgery to remove the stiches, so I haven't seen a doctor in over 2 years. I am young, don't have much money, don't have insurance, and can't afford the bill, so I just don't go. . . Thankfully I was on State Insurance when I needed the surgery, I recieved a statement in the mail that the total bill was over $15,000.00

Does this sound like a problem due to the surgery or more of an uterine problem?? Any advice would be great.

I'm 23 and had a laparoscopic appendectomy in April 08. A few months after healing from the surgery I started to have the same kinds of problems described above - pain near the incisions, terrible cramping during menstruation, "phantom" pain where my appendix used to be. the worst pain has been during sex. It may be some of the worst pain I've ever experienced.

I started doing research about why I'd have pain from intercourse and came across a few articles about abdominal adhesions after surgery causing this kind of pain. It seems to be more common for women and because of the sensitive nature of many of our organs in that area the pain is much more intense.

the only thing doctors do as of right now is to remove the scarring, but this in turn causes more scarring, and more. below is an article discussing adhesion:

gynecare.com/bgdisplay.jhtml?itemname=adhesions_pelvic_pain_basic_information

basically adhesions bind your organs together making any kind of movement or swelling (especially like that during your period) very painful.

I hate to say it, but the pain is real and there isn't much we can do. If you're a woman and you decide to go to a doctor, I would strongly suggest seeing a surgeon familiar with adhesion prevention and I'd probably choose a gynecological surgeon.

I am 30 and had a surgery last year to remove ovary fibroid and chocolate cysts. The lumps were quite big that they caused heavy bleeding and severe menstrual disorders during menstrual period.

After the surgery until now, I experienced severe pain and cramp only on the right side of the my pelvic area. I have severe pelvic and lower back pain especially after the menstrual. This pain is getting worse and it reoccurs every month during and after menstrual period. I take oral painkillers but they do not relieve the pain at all.

Now doctor prescribed Yasmin pills to me and hope to decrease the pain after taking the pills.

Now I am on the pills for 3rd days but found it really brings side effects to me. I feel moody, depressed, dizzy, headache, breast pain, abnormal fast heartbeat after taking the pills.

I am really upset and worry about my condition now as it really disrupts my life. I am not able to attend to and concentrate on my job/work with the severe cramp and side effects. Especially my work is very stressful and it makes my condition worse. I am worry that my depression will be getting worse if I continue on like this.

im also 23yrs old. I had a laparoscopic appendectomy 8 days ago.
the first symptoms appeared Nov 07 when i awoke through the night having really crippling pains in the stomach. I went to the Emergency room where they pretty much did nothing.... the pain went away over the next night and the doctor told me it could just be "backed up blood in the ovaries" and sent me on my way
Then about Nov 08 i started getting cramping type pains in my lower stomach through the night. gradually they went away and i could fall back to sleep. Then they kept coming back more and more frequently.
9 days ago it was extremely painful and i was just so sick of it that i decided to go to my local GP.
She thought it was either appendicitis, ovarian cysts or endometriosis and sent me for an ultrasound. they showed swelling and suggested appendicitis. 6hours later they removed my appendix and said they were only a little swollen and red but there was "mirky fluid around them" which they cleaned up. The surgeon also checked my ovaries and said they looked healthy. My right shoulder and lower ribs hurt so so so much from the gas but that has gone away now.

the thing is i've still been waking through the night with stabbing and cramping pains which are different to the pain when i try to move around or lay on my side! Im really worried that that hasn't fixed whatever the cause of pain is and im scared it will come back as bad again! i've been investigating the other possibility which is endometriosis and found out my mum had that and had a historectomy at 25!! this is a really serious condition and 30% of ladies with it are infertile, im waiting another week then if i still have pain im seeing my Dr for a referral to a specialist gynecologist. I would recommend you investigate this condition further as the symptoms seem similar to what some of you are saying.

Best of luck to everyone.

Apparently they leave stumps behind sometimes; google "stump appendicitis" you will find information. I know someone suffering from this pain now. Have your doctor's check for that or abscess.

I'm a 22 year old female and had an emergency appendectomy 6 months ago. It burst by the time they got to it in the hospital so it was pretty bad...none of the morphine was working whatsoever. I was there for 9 days...(by about day 5 all the morphine started giving me a migrane so i switched to Percocet...a note about morphine...don't stay on it that long!) In any case the healing process after i got out of the hospital has been very slow. About three weeks after the appendectomy I started having incredible pain all over my stomach but mainly in my lower abdomin. It wasn't constant, it would come and go but when it came it was terrible (no amount of Percocet was helping) I was also constipated and later had extreme diarrhea. I had another CT scan which revealed nothing, I got blood tests which revealed nothing and then a colonoscopy which revealed nothing. My mom suggested i get a stool sample done. That's when they discovered i had C-Diff. C-Diff is a deadly bacteria which can kill you if you don't take care of it in time but ironically it's pretty easy to get rid of with antibiotics! Many people get C-Diff from being in the hospital for a while. So...for those of you how have been in pain for years this information is not helpful :-) but for those of you who have been having severe stomach pain and all the tests are coming back negative try asking about C-Diff. It's a real serious bacteria and went unnoticed by two doctors until my Mom suggested i get a stool sample!
Another note about my appendicitis....i still have pain in my sides and find it hard to breath when I sleep on my sides (ideas about this anyone?) the lower right part of my stomach is also still swollen....and i'm still tired alot more than i used to be before all this happened. i'm hoping this does not go on for over two years as it appears to have been for some people! I know one thing a physical therapist told me is to get rid of scar tissue, it helps to stretch that area and rub it. Don't know if any of that information helps but i know that i certainly have appreciated others sharing their info! thanks everyone!

I had my badly ruptured appendix removed in Sept of 2006. It left a 7 inch scar. These days, I feel the same pain that brought me to the ER- varying levels of intensity and some days it is not there at all.

My hunch was always that it was surgical adhesions. I have not had it checked out by a doctor yet. (I'm a 45 year old male).

I had an appendectomy just over 3 months ago. It wasn't quite an emergency situation as the pain had only begun to occur around 3pm and I was admitted around 6:30 that same night. At 2am the surgeon made the decision to remove my appendix, though I could tell he had had a difficult time wrestling over whether I should lose it or keep it and wait and see. The CAT scan and other tests were pretty unconclusive- the only thing he was going off of was the fact that I appeared very sick. The CAT scan had also shown a slight shadow where my appendix should have been obviously inflamed. My body hides ailments very well- when they finally performed the surgery at 4am the surgeon knew he had made the right decision.

My recovery was typical- immense discomfort during the hospital stay despite drugs through the IV. But something had happened during my surgery I hadn't counted on: not even a week after being discharged from the hospital at school I was re-admitted to my home hospital for Deep Vein Thrombosis in my R. leg. Recovery def. took a turn for the worse for a while. Now, three months later, I'm experiencing not-quite-stabbing pains in the same area as my incision, only just above and to the right a bit more. My Dr. believes I have pulled the muscles of the abdomen wall, but we're keeping an eye on it. The presence of painful scar tissue wouldn't surprise me after my surgical complication from the 1st hospital....

I had a laprascopic appendectomy 6 months ago. I have had alot of Right quadrant pain since my surgery. At first had 3 months of fighting off C-diff. I was also diagnosed anemic, and put on iron. I began having right side issues (as if my appendix were still there) shortly thereafter. I went off the iron to see if that was what was causing the pain. I've been off the iron for 2 months, and have begun experiencing the pain again. I often feel bloated & don't go as regular as I'd like, but am now back on align to see if this helps the issue. The pain is very constant, and feels just like I did before my surgery. I am not sleeping well, as it often wakes me. Sometimes taking ibprophen helps, but not always. I have experienced depression alot since all of this. I first thought it was just post surgery, but now its more due to not feeling well as I always have before. I've never been a sick person. I can't remember the last time I felt WELL! I work at a Gastroenterologist office, and know depression often comes with Gastro issues. I would've never believed it would effect me as I'm a pretty happy person in general. Sorry we're all experiencing this mess, but glad I'm not alone in it! it bites!
