I have had my thyroid removed - just over 5 weeks ago now. My pararthyroids have decided to stop working for now, so I am on calcium 3 times a day, but that's ok - I'll do what I have to do. I had graves disease also, but since my op all is improving. I think we must look at the positive, my life was c**p before my thyroid removal, and that was for a few years and now it is improving slowly, but it is improving so I am grabbing that positive feeling. Things aren't perfect, but they are better :)

i had a total thyroidectomy nearly three years ago. i was only 17 so being told i would fail all of my alevels and i wouldnt get into dance college was horrible. but i got 3 alevels in physics product design and engineering and got a part scholarship for dance college. it was very hard work . but now i have blood tests only every 6 months and my medication has not had to be adjusted in year and a half. my only problem is that i cant budge the extra weight. but i have faith you will get back to normal and you will feel better even though i never thought i would feel normal again 3 years ago!!

I can tell you from experience with the calcium levels... that it is both physically AND emotionally draining. It was thought that my calcium level issues post thyroidectomy were due to being a gastric bypass patient and so I wasn't absorbing correctly. Whatever teh issue, I had my thyroidectomy in July 2008, by January 2009 I was getting Calcium infusions 1 to 2 times a week. Over a six month period this put a drain on my life, pocketbook and bank of sick time. It was as if my body was rejecting the treatment... FINALLY on a fluke, I was sent to a new doctor and we tried the following:

100,000 units of Vitamin D once a week (yes, that is NOT a typo)
Calcitrol .5 mcg 3x day
ISOTONIX calcium 3x day

Within a month my calcium was normal. I truly believe that the Isotonix which is a highly absorbable form of calcium that you mix a powder with water (fixes like alka seltzer) may have been the difference for me.

I currently take the ISOTONIX 2x day
Calcitrol .5 mcg 2x day
50,000 units of Vitamin D

I have been "normal" for six months!! :D

I had a total thyroidectomy Aug 17th/2010. I am also experiencing chest pain radiating through the chest above the brestbone and below it. I am finding this quite disturbing. I did not have it before the surgery. It feels as if there is something pressinbg just belo the surgical scar. My voice is also an octave lower although there is a small improvement in that area.
I was glad to see these posts. Has anyone received an answer to this problem/ I see the surgeon this Monday and my GP on the following Friday.

omg!! someone I can reate to.  I had a Throidectomy last year in October.  Before surgery I was experincing more anxiety than ever.  the surgery went well, but I also had a parathyoid removed. I still take anit-anxiety meds, but still feel anxious.  I am also on an anit-depressant, which I was on for years before this.  I feel better in some ways, but now more anxiety.. grrr.

hope this helps..

thanks for the post about the additional hormone not being replaced with synthroid.  I too have worsened depression after surgery and anxiety.  I will definately look into this with my doctor.

thanks..

HAVE YOU EVER HAD YOUR ADRENAL GLANDS CHECKED FOR OVERACTIVENESS OR EVEN FATIGUE OR HAD THEM RUN A SCAN FOR A PHEOCHROMOCYTOMA THEY LIVE AS PARAGANGLIOMAS IN THE ABDOMEN OR EVEN IN THE ADRENAL MEDULLA OF YOUR ADRENAL GLANDS THIS WOULD BE WORTH TALKING TO YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT

HI...I just had a total thyroidectomy as well.. I am also having bouts with hypocalcemia (calcium depletion). My endocrynologist prescribed OsCal and Rocalcitriol (vit. D3)... I can also recommend Caltrate 600 D plus chewable.... But my best advice as I have taken myself is be patient... it takes time for the body to respond and for you to realize what works and what doesn't work...- be sure to ask questions...your doctor should know you do not know (you are not the doctor)..so don't be afraid to ask.... as you recover and rest take notes of symptoms, questions, concerns you may have so you can share them with your doctor... Your relationship with your endocrynologist is important in this time for you... Hope that helps!! Speedy recovery!

hey brenda - sorry to read what youre going thru - i was diagnose with thyroid cancer in 2005, had a total removal, then was told after surgery that the thyroid wasn't cancerous ! great,, huh - i started off on synthroid, which made me feel like i was living out of body - very weird - doctor kept telling me to be patient, but after about 6 -7 months, i switched doctors, and wasput on levox which started out ok, but eventually morphed into synthroid like symptoms - all this time i asked about armor thyroid, and was constantly talked out of it - after 3 years and a new doctor, i went on armor thyroid and it made a big difference - however , i still had lack of consistency in appetite, sex drive, emotional stability - after visits to 2 eastern style doctors i was give adrenal system supplements and those have i think really helped

my body get back in balance - so my long winded advice here is to get on armour, the only natural thryoid product - and get some adrenal system supplelments and see of they help - they are herbal based so if you have allergies, check with your allergist. good luck
