My history:
Age 42 mother of 2
*April 2005-tubal and uterine ablation for heavy bleeding(lifelong problem)
*April-November 2005-Little bleeding, becoming heavier over each month
*November 2005-Admittance into ER following 3 days of debilitating lower left pelvic pain. Pain stops that evening and diganosis by ER doc and personal doc after ultrasound is ovarian cyst.
*December 2005-April 2006-Pain returns and worsens every month until doc discovers scar tissue in uterus from ablaation. Performs outpatient surgery on uterus removing tissue.
*May 2006 to present- Pain continues to worsen monthly with the following cycle....severe left unilateral pain 12 hrs>pain stops>period starts>bleed for 2-3 days>bleeding stops>pain starts again>12 hrs>pain stops>bleeding starts....this can go on for 6 to 12 days.
Always as soon as pain stops old brown/fresh red blood starts. Always the same cycle every month.
So I summarized with my doc and showed him articles I found about PTLS and although he was open about it, he along with many other docs does not believe it happens. Insists that he and many other surgeons have performed many TLs and that they just don't see women with the problems that would be associated with the numbers of ligations they perform every year.
Our next step is for me to be at the radiology office while the pain is happening in order to see if the tube is swollen and or blood/fluid filled during the pain. He has suggested a nerve issue and continues to think cysts. The fact that it is cyclical and completely unilateral gave him pause though. Women who have cysts generally experience change from side to side.
I cannot help, but in my gut(literally), see the correlation between pain cessation and onset of blood. Over and over again.
I feel very lucky that I have not experienced the range of symptoms that many women on here have suffered. I have been moodier and gained 30 pounds in the last 9 months, but pain is all that is on my mind at this point. I'll deal with other issues later.
I posted this for two reasons...1. I want any women with the same symptoms to know that I'm right there with you and I hope this helps! 2. I would like to know if anyone has received treatment such as a salpingectomy as opposed to hysterectamy for treatment of this?
Thanks for any help!

I had my TL a little over 1 year ago, since I have gone into a deep depression, no sex drive, lose of energy, dizziness, pain and discomfort, pms, ect.. I have read many posting that seem to match me quite well. Is there any other solution other than reversal? I am open to any and all suggestions at this point. At my GYN's request, I have been to numerous doctors including gastorinestinal that have put me through numerous tests claiming that this is all from a stomach or colon problem. They have all come up with nothing. Please tell me if there are any other suggestions.
I had a tubal 6 months ago after I delivered my child by c-section. Ever since then my cycle is irregular and the pain is unbearable. Before I read this I was seriously thinking something was terribly wrong. When I get my period I get stabbing pain all through my stomach and it seems like it's coming from my ovaries. I have gained weight and have terrible headaches all the time. My doctor told me there were no side effects from the procedure. thanks for the info.
I am so glad that someone else is experiencing problems like me but mine aren't as severe. My periods have been normal and I don't think my mood is much different. The problem is mostly my sex drive...I have none. My husband thinks it has something to do with him...he's so wrong. I have also been having extreme exhaustion, mental lapses, hot and cold flashes, and pinching pains in my sides and abdomen. Anybody else? Thanks- Jessica in TN
Like the previous poster , I have been experiencing similar symptoms but not quite as severe. I got my tubal done 4 years ago after the birth of my son for medical reasons. I am now 29 years old and am experiencing hair loss, weight gain (with the inability to lose the weight even with dietary changes), vaginal dryness and itchiness at times without experiencing a yeast infection. My skin around my hands and on my legs will itch for no reason at all, and sometimes it feels like things are crawling on me. I never had heavy and painful periods before but they continually get worse as the months go by. I have severe bouts of depression that comes and goes. I get irritable quickly and am prone to crying without cause now. I didn't have a loss of sex drive until most recently, though I have been experiencing hot flashes and chills as well.
I was informed prior to my TL that there was a possibility of heavier periods and a few hormonal changes, but nothing this severe. I am finding that it has been progressively worse as things go and it's starting to have severe affects on my relationships with friends and family. A lot of the time I just want to be left alone even though that's not what I really want at all, but I am just pushing everyone away. I have another OBGYN appointment in a week for a hormonal test and I guess we will go from there. It's nice to know that there are others my age that have the same problems... I too felt quite alone until I started doing a little research. Thank you so much for your posts.

i experience hormone imbalance. I have migraines and become nauseous either on the onset of my period or at the end of it. I never thought that menstruation could be so deliberating until I had TL. My periods are heavy, kind of gushing the first couple of days, and lengthy... Needless to say, they leave me worn out. It takes a few days for me to recover. I get dizzy spells. I also get absent-minded.Sadly, I am not myself any more. I am quite young and feel like I am getting older too fast.
I am 24 yrs old and I had my tubes tied oct 2006. I have 3 children and their father and I know that we dont want any more kids but I really which that I would have just gotten another IUD. Every since I got my tubes tied and had my first period after having the twins I have had problems. I was having this terrible crampy sharp pain shocking like pains that was continues until my period started. When it started it would be heavy one day then light the next and soon as I think it is going off it starts up really heavy again. Two weeks later my period came on again and to date it has been on for 8 days. I have mood swings and all things that I have heard my mother complain about and I am way to young to be having hot flashes. Im going to call my doctor tommorrow. This is unreal I never knew I would have these type of problems from having my tubes tied. I really wish that I had not done it. The paper i read about tubualigations didnt say anything about the complications that come with it.
I have been going crazy lately with these menstrual problems. My period lasts 2+ weeks. The first week is beyond heavy, I'm basically tied to the bathroom. Then it changes to like a 2nd period that's lighter for the 2nd week. I don't understand why it's changing like this. It's been getting progressively worse over the last 1-2 years. I had my tubes tied back in June of 1993. I was only 21 at the time. Needless to say, I'm regretting it bigtime now. I am researching having it reversed as I'm not ready fora hysterectomy at the age of 36. Anyone else out there experiencing this?
like the rest of you, i had a TL after a c-section with my son in 2001 when i was 37. i was not told of any side effects, but i would have done it anyway. the symptoms of ptls started almost immediately. the worst of which was heavy periods on days 2 - 3 that left me exhausted, the periods were full of clots, then it would just stop. then start again a couple days later. eventually the blood gets brown and disgusting. all this lasts 2 - 3 weeks and ends just in time to relax and get the next period! i complained to my doctor every time i went. he wasn't concerned - just said it was age or early on-set menopause starting. he tried hormones but that didn't work. i had ultrasounds, a d & c, and am now facing a hysterectomy at 42. nothing has worked to relieve the symptoms. i stumbled upon ptls on the internet and couldn't believe there was an actual name for what i had - i wasn't just a mass of unrelated symptoms! my periods are still bad, but the vaginal itchiness due to the ph levels being out of whack are now a close second in the annoying department! i am ready to do what i need to to be rid of all this hassle. i'm glad i'm not the only one.
I hope that this reaches some of you before you get a hysterectomy or anything else. What you are going through, you are not alone! Please keep that in mind. I did some searching because I was feeling so lost with not being myself. I found an excellent website that helped me feel better and to see that tehre were choices. PTLS is a condition that has some horrible side effects and doctors should be required to inform patients of all of them. Because this is not recognized as a medical issue, insurance will not pay for a reversal. So many women are being left hormonally castrated without the facts and nothing to do about it. There is a great doctor who believes in it and tries to help. I have not seen him yet but I do plan on it.

Thanks everyone SOOOO much for all the info!! My husband and I are about to have our 4th child in the 5 1/2 years we've been married. We're thrilled, but confident that we don't want to have any more. =) He looked into a vasectomy, but isn't sure... we've also discussed a tubal for me-- I'm only 24, but with 4 children...
Anyway, I had googled tubal ligation and not seen ANYTHING on PTLS... He searched it a little while ago and found a site about it. Following up on his search (he didn't understand all the medical jargon) I am shocked about how many women have problems. My DR said that he almost never does tubals, he prefers the IUD, but we don't like that option...
My mom, her sis, and my grandmother all had tubals and haven't reported any problems (my grandma's was over 40 years ago). Anyway, now I'm really rethinking the TL. Again, THANKS so much for all the info!!!!!
For any of you that may read this and are having low hormone issues, my aunt started using wild yam cream after her hysterectomy and didn't have any of the usual side effects of a hysterectomy.

I know exactly how all of you feel. I had my tubes tied a year and a half ago after I had my third child. And just recently I started having some problems with pain from bending over and picking my children up or cleaning my home. When I went in the dr. couldn't understand why I was having all this severe pain. So he went and schedule a day for surgery and went in and found that my left ovary and left fallopian tube had attached to the wall of my cervix. So he had to remove those and I also had adhesions. And now I'm experiencing pain on my right side. If I would've known this I probably wouldn't have had the surgery done.
Sorry.....post is below.
I had my tubal a little over 10 years ago. Since then I have had irregular periods, severe cramping and lower back pain. The pain has increased so much over the last few months that at times I can cannot stand up straight or walk any distance. Last week I had xrays done and my Doctor has discovered that the clamp that was placed on my right tube has detached itself and migrated to the left side of my body and located itself near my spine..hance the severe back pain. I will be making an appt. with a specialist/OBGYN to see if surgery is required and when.
If I had know all the trouble a tubal would cause or be better informed at the time I would never have done it!

I had a tubal in 2001 following the birth of my 3rd son. I have recently changed depression meds and have not gotten my period. I have tender breasts and very tired. I am hoping it's from the med switch, or could I be pregnant?
