13% of all South African population may be HIV-positive, what is a dramatic increase from last year's estimate.
The department of health yesterday said that between 6.29 and 6.57 million South Africans are infected with the HIV. South Africa is now the country with second highest number of infections , right behind India.
The statistics from 2004 according to blood tests on the women showed that 29.5% were HIV-positive, up from 27.9% in 2003. Currently Africa has more than 25 million of the estimated 39 million people infected with HIV worldwide.
South African's president, Thabo Mbeki, has also questioned the severity of the HIV/Aids crisis in the country, saying that it is not as serious as some studies show.
After latest statistics South African health activists blamed the government's slow response to the disease for increasing the number of Aids deaths in the country.
