If doing that irritates it you should. I am usually able to masturbate by not rubbing the sore spot. I normally hold my foreskin back tight and dry rub my glans so it's the same as being circumcised but with a little more feeling. I don't like doing it in the shower because when it's wet it feels slippery anyway and I can't tell if I'm making a sore spot until later when it begins to hurt.
I tried different soaps and shampoos with bad results in the shower too. Many of them really made sore when I rubbed them in as you do when masturbating even though simply washing with them was OK.
So I prefer dry rubbing because I can tell if I'm overdoing it and lighten up a bit. Plus it really feels nicer, dry fingers on the dry glans.
