I'm not sure if this is what it is because you said you're experiencing this pain in the back of your ribcage, but earlier this year I was experiencing the same breathing issue, and I'm a small girl, NOT an active/exercising person--105 pounds and 5'6"--but my doctor said I was suffering from costochondral separation of the rib (AKA one of my ribs was separated from my sternum) and it was SO painful. Unfortunately, the only thing you can do to heal it in that situation is just wait it out and try not to do anything that intensifies the pain (and probably you might want to get your chest wrapped up, that's what I did and it helped for when I coughed/sneezed since that always made the pain worse).

I'm seaming to be having the issues. It feels like some one is squeezing the bottom of my lungs. It hurts top breath. I've always been told I have a high threshold for pain as well. My doctor doesn't know either. Sorry you're having back issues. It sucks. Good luck.

Hey guys I hope everyone with this issues sees this. I had pneumonia a little over a month ago and one day after not sleeping for days and days I woke up after taking what was not a smart amount of various medications to help me sleep and help my symptoms. Well, I slept but I woke up with the feeling I had been shot through and through from under my left rib cage and out the back. I feared that I damaged my liver and was so embarrassed I didn't go see anyone and lived in agony and off of left over pain killers for a good week or so.

I couldn't lay on my front or back without it making it worse, when I ate right after each swallow it hurt really bad, I felt bloated right under my rib cage, and was easily out of breath. At times it felt like I was having a heart attack.

I finally went in after being out of pain meds and the doc was really concerned. They did blood work and that was all find, so no worries about liver or gallbladder so she was concerned I had a pulmonary embolism but I had no other symptoms related to that. Still, she wanted a catscan to be sure but I wasn't about to pay for that. So I went home and did TONS of research. I came to the conclusion I had developed GERD.

So I went and bought some over the counter 150 strength generic zantac to find out if that was my ailment. Sure enough after two days of taking it twice a day my symptoms pretty much went away. I stopped taking it to make sure I wasn't just better and it was a coincidence and yep after a day it came back. I called my Doc and she agreed (my thought is why didn't she realize this!?!?) So I started back up on a prescrip of same med and have been on it for the past week and pretty much prob free. If I forget to take my night dose I know because I start coughing which is another symptom because the acid is irritating your throat. I go take it and in about 30 min stop coughing. I hope this reaches and helps everyone scared to death by these symptoms like I was. It is a pretty cheap test to see if this is your issue without paying for all the other tests. HOWEVER! If you have a change in your stool like some people have said tarry looking or bloody GO TO THE DOCTOR because that is not GERD, that would likely be a peptic ulcer or something else similar which can be an emergency.

I have been dealing with this exact type of pain for 3 years with no relief from physical therapy, deep tissue massage, pressure point therapy, or chiropractic.  I'm getting ready to see a pain specialist who is going to do some kind of injection therapy because the muscles have been in a constant spasm for so many years now that when the chiropractor pushes the rib head back into place, it comes right back out just a couple minutes later.  Very painful and just gets worse over time.  I started chiropractic to help it the moment I started feeling it 3 years ago but no relief.  Had ultrasounds to see if it was my gallbladder, had MRI, CT, Xray...nothing.  Been on muscle relaxers like flexeril and robaxin, valium....its awful....sometimes I cant get myself out of bed in the morning without help because of the pain.

I have been suffering the same symptoms for 2 years now, Today it is so severe that I can not talk because trying to breathe is so painful that i can't take a deep enough breath. I am already on pain killers for spinal issues. But this pain is going far above that. I have been in and out of emergency rooms, been admitted, told it was asthma, anxiety attack, ( i was in counseling and my counselor told me she highly doubted that because it goes on for days and sometimes weeks.)
I have a huge abdominal hernia and they have blamed that, my old gastric bypass, vomiting, etc. But no one ever fixes it and every time I get an "attack" of this, they get worse. I was almost put on a respirator at the hospital because i couldn't breath, but then the next day they just sent me home and told to go see my regular doctor. Who did nothing.
Please, you have these symptoms, advocate for yourself and get help, since so many of us are having this problem then obviously we are not making it up or having anxiety attacks. Do not let it go.

I have been having pain in y back going on two weeks. It started a ittle off and on but every time I had this pain , it is very hard for me to breathe very painful and gets me bent over to stop it. The past week it starts every time I either bend a little or turn to the side . It then doubles me up in pain and I do not dare to breathe. Got to the point I had to sit in wheelchair so I would not have to bend or turn. Took two non-aspirin pills and doing ok, but when they wear off, the pain is back. Itis not a steady pain, only when I do something..Will this go away on it's ownor should I see a Doctor?

What youve described here fits what im experiencing, i beleive i have a rib head out on both sides and have had the pain for several years. when i inhale and tighten my back muscles at the same, i get a sharp pain in two separate spots right and left of of, and Near the spine but not on it, and both a few inches below the shoulder blades. Watcha think? I take no meds whatsoever, and just kind of deal with it, but it drives me crazy at times.
