Should 20 yr old male be told he had corrective surgery for Hypospadia as a baby?
My Subject Title says it all.... yet my concern is if there is any psycho-sexual problem related to having the surgery.... I read that if the patient was too young to remember the surgery, that his body image and sexual attitudes would develop normally. I am the mother and at the time of the surgery 18 years ago I did ask the dr.
at what age should I tell my son he had the hypospadia surgery. He actually said this: "Why would you tell him?" I said because it is part of his medical history and if congenital he may have a child with it. I was shocked to be given such advice as Dont' Ask Don't Tell! I have concerns that my son is in college and still does not go on dates and has a severe reaction to me asking why? It could be totally unrelated but I worry that if I do and say nothing... and there is some oddity or scaring on his penis from the surgery that he is suffering needlessly if he could have and explanation or additional correction. I was assured at the time of surgery that the healing was excellent and no further concern was needed.... but.... I don't like this secrecy if indeed he needs the help now!
I welcome comments from any male that was told about his surgery after the age of 10. Was it a shock? Or were you able to adjust or was it no big deal? Btw, as his mom, I would have his father discuss it with him...that much I have figured out. Thanks for any help.
