Well I am 20 and I have had this problem since I was 17. I am now pregnant and I have another one. It's nice to know what I have... Im going to work on it at home for now because my due date is approaching and I want the least amount of stress there is... I have found that soaking in a bath tub with about 2 cups of epsom salt does the trick along with warm wash cloths. It takes a few days for it to go away but already after one bath the pain has decreased enough so I can sleep. %-) which is already hard enough... Thank you everyone! :-)

I have a friend that was told the same thing. When you get the surgery it decreases your chances of having it, but will not prevent it 100%. I would get it because anything to keep these things from happening all the time would be awesome! But look into it and see what the doctor tells you!

Hi Guys! I also suffer from occasional Pilonidal cysts. It started when I was about 20. I first noticed that I had a little pain when I was doing crunches, then I fell right on my butt onto a hard floor and that caused it to get a lot worse. The pain got so bad, I could hardly sit down, then one day as I was mashing around back there, I noticed puss coming out. I just kept squeezing and the pain stopped once it all came out. In my case, there is a small duct like opening at the very top of where my crack starts. You have to pull your cheeks apart to see it. Sorry, I know that is gross, but someone asked where it came out. I got a lot of great information from
According to this website, poor posture can also contribute to the problem, which I definitely have. Anyway, hope this helps guys! Good luck!

I went to my doctor to check out my cyst near the tailbone. He told told me that if the cyst is above your tailbone its called a (Pilinodial cyst) which in most cases require surgery. Fortunately my cyst was below my tailbone which my doc told me to keep its heated with a damp towel or warm bath it should go away for the time being. So its best to get it checked out if you are unsure of the position of the cyst. Popping it is recommended but it may get infected especially if your sitting down to take a number 2.:-) Also keep area trimmed as hair in that area tends to have back growth with can cause clogging and oil build up. Hope this helps all

ok. i am so glad to see that someone is posting this. i am 45...i have fallen a couple of times once when i was 11, on my butt and another when i was 23. i think i injured my tailbone. over the years, when i sit for a period of time my tailbone sticks out weird on one side, and i will get a bister to the top of my crack only on one side. i think this is the bone rubbing a blister. i ordered a cushion for my chair at work, but i have one now on my crack. it hurts bad...i am scared to have surgery to have the lower part of tailbone removed. as i get older i know my skin will get thinner, and if i lay in bed at a nursing home, it will always be a sore. i get it if lay flat or sit. not to be glad that someone else is in misery, but would like to hear from others wth this same problem so we can figure out some different ways to eliviate pain.

I had this too - starting before Christmas - did absolutely nothing for it, and now it's almost gone. It was very swollen and painful for a few months, but now there is very little swelling left, only scaly skin as if there is a scab over it. To those who have it, don't worry - it will probably go away.

Like many medical issues, everyone has different outcomes. Working in surgery, I have seen many, and as a patient and sufferer of a pilonidal cyst, I have felt it also. In my particular case I had surgery. My cyst had bothered me for over a year, and the recurrent pain it caused was just something I no longer wanted to deal with. My cyst kept closing at the skin surface, and since it did that the infection just got worse each time, which is why I had surgery. After surgery I felt much better, and have not had a problem since.
Not everyone has surgery or even needs it, some cysts do not flare over and over like mine did. Warm baths with a little epsom salt helped me, since it helps draw out infection. Don't try to boil yourself in the tub, warm water is enough, and a box of epsom salt does not work better than what is recommended. If the area is oozing a lot, it helps to lightly cover the area with 4x4 sponges, especially if you sit a lot, just change them often. I found the 4x4 helped to draw out and lessen the pressure some. If you have a pilonidal cyst, it is not a tumor, so don't freak out. They are common, and although they are annoying, they are treatable. Don't let embarassment stop you from going to the doctor, your cyst will not be the first one they've ever seen or treated.

So I looked this up because it happened to me recently and was so troubling at first. I was a grad student who was sitting all day in class on pretty uncomfortable chairs. Eventually I started having such horrible pain when I sat down and sometimes when I walked. Things got so bad it literally took a couple minutes to stand up and sit down. My friends just told me I had back problems (I'm 26 - this is too early for that stuff). I woke up one morning and was making breakfast when I noticed my pajama bottoms were soaked in my rear, and it was pretty foul-smelling. I checked it out and there was a lot of pus and blood coming from this duct that was right at the top of my butt-crack. After calling a family member who works in the medical field, I was told to let it drain and squeeze out whatever I could (that is what a doctor would have done) and take a hot shower. I did and literally 20 minutes later the pain was completely gone and nothing was draining. Haven't had a problem since - hopefully it doesnt come back, but if it does I know what to do. If you have this problem, don't panic - you may even avoid going to the doctor if you can drain it yourself but should if things get complicated. Try avoiding sitting on hard surfaces for too much time during the day (I read somewhere that this pressure on the tailbone increases the chances for a Pilonidal cyst like these).

no, if there is no draining or pus then is most likely not a pilonidal cyst. i have had coccyxdynia for two years and no chiropractor or colon rectal doctor and nerologist has helped. i have finally been refered to a orthopedic surgeon i just hope he can treat this. one doctor suspected i had a polinidal cyst but was ruled out i have a hard bump which is my bone area, it's tender to the touch, but not a soft bump or any drainage or pus.
I can't sit for long periods, have difficulty getting up from sitting position, can't lay on my back, extremely painful and doctors having hard time treating me, i use a donut cushion and have for the past 2 years - which no longer helps, pain is getting worse and sharp. I have not had any falls or trauma to my coccyx area no one is able to idenify the reason for my pain in my tailbone, i've had MRI, x-rays CT scan and even a bone scan. Can anyone help.

I've had one for years now, it comes and usually sticks around
for a few days and then just disappears for a few months.
Usually get it from sitting down for long periods of time.
, or sleeping on my back.

A hot compress, as warm as you can stand it, salted if possible. It's similar to the treatment for a boil. I've taken to using an antibiotic petroleum thing (bactaracin or neosporin, the former works better) applied after cleaning with alcohol, then putting a LARGE bandage completely covering the exterior part. I used to get these a couple of times a year, but since developing a vericocele (which forces me to sit differently to prevent pain in the front) - i am having this more frequently and larger. The super scary thing is when it just drains blood for 2 minutes... You feel like you're dying of cancer or something.
Don't try to lance it yourself. Don't Squeeze it too much (like a pimple). Hot, salted compresses with as hot water as you can stand. I roll a washcloth up as tight as possible and use water that probably is an unsafe temperature, but doing this until the top breaks open and the inside drains (you'll know, because it will get smaller instantly and you'll see goop everywhere) is the only home remedy. It's gross. It hurts. It's literally a pain in the ass. But you'll live.
