I've had a little black spot just above my tailbone for as long as I can remember, had no idea it could actually be something medical. It occasionally becomes inflamed, and my tailbone hurts horribly if I sit for too long, but I don't recall ever having to drain pus. Is it supposed to be a black bump? Should I go to the doctor or just drain it myself?

My son is right now in the restroom howling in pain. He complained of a bruised tail bone and we went to the doctor. Xray showed no crack or broke bone. He is in the restroom draining a purplish red fluid discharge. Painful. Gonna be at the dr again soon

I've had this problem for 20 + years. I get it randomly. It may be 2-3 years before it reoccurs. The first time it happened to me was when I was in high school, Sophomore year. I always walked to school, and one day slipped and fell on my tailbone, on a patch of ice covered with snow. It was painful that day, and as the days went, got more and more painful. I did notice a bump on my tailbome, and became extremely painful to sit, and even lie down. I didn't know what to do, but one day I used an ointment I had used in the past to alleviate pain called Tiger Balm, which can be found in Walgreen, Walmart, and other stores as well. Well the next morning it drained, and the pain was gone. Now every time I get this I immediately apply the tiger balm , and lets it do its thing. I should get it checked out and get it permanently removed, but this works for me.

My aunt had this when she was about 17. The doctors called it a pilonidal abcess, they did surgery to remove it because it was wrapping around her tailbone. My grandma had to clean it and pack it with gauze daily to get it healed. Because it has to heal from the inside out. I recommend getting it taken care of before it gets too bad. And why take the chance of it coming back. Your best bet is to get it taken care of now, for good.

Hi I myself have had the surgery I was in so much pain I had no choice it was only a few months ago and now it's bad so may need to have another

I was dying of pain also and very happy to read this about this pilonidal cyst. Absolutely gross, yes! Use some paper towels semi wet it and lay it over the bumpy area, they apply pressure with two fingers, one finger upper side of bump and the other lower side, then by pressuring the nasty cyst will come out.
Do this several times until all the blood are out of that tiny whole. If u have alcohol pad it would be a good area to disinfect it.
You will feel relieved after this, I promise you. I thought to share my experience so i can help someone else.
Feel better....:)

I just want to thank everyone who puts there info here on line. i have been getting these for ever i'm 63, retired truck driver. i always blamed them on wearing trunks with a mesh liner, or some bacterial thing, i usually get them in the summer when its hot and humid. one may have broke open about 30 years ago but they usually go away in 3 or 4 days. last night the pain was so bad i had a fever and chills, my whole body locked up, i could hardly move. i tore my tub out and put in a full shower. so i just took a plastic storage box large enough to get my butt in, set it in the shower, filled it with hot water and epson salts. sat in it with my head resting on the shower wall. i fell asleep. it took the pain away, the water was cold when i woke. when i see my doctor again i will say something. i still think the mesh liner in trunks irritates the area and brings them on. good luck to all you. it sucks getting old but help from others makes it tolerable. again thank you
