I have this as well... Been about 5 weeks. Caught it on the last couple days of a trip to Iceland (slept with the window open). I agree that AC/fans make it worse. Talking a lot during the day makes it worse and brings on coughing fits. Typically the sore throat is worse in the a.m. I was taking 800mg of ibuprofen to stop the sore throat (worked for a few days but I didn't want to keep popping ibuprofen). I've also used mucinex and that has helped. Robotussin (cough) and Dayquil do nothing. I've been drinking a lot of tea (helps) and trying to stay hydrated. It definitely comes and goes for a few days at a time. The coughing has almost disappeared, if I refrain from a lot of talking. Fevers/chills happen at least once per week. Hell of a bug to catch... My stress levels are about 8-9 out of 10 lately and sleep is erratic. I've been focusing on getting more sleep and staying away from fans/air current... seem to be making progress.

First my husband had a terrible and longlasting cold, which I ended up catching it from him. For a month and a half, I was miserable, afflicted with an ongoing mucousy cough, horrible nonstop post nasal drip, severe coughing fits that were worse at night, and a sore throat that kept jumping locations every time I tried a strong remedy. I tested negative for strep throat and my doctor gave me a Z pack antibiotic (Azithromycin) plus several natural remedies, NONE of which helped. I'm a Registered Nurse, so I tried EVERYTHING else I could possibly think of, both over the counter traditional cold remedies and natural holistic remedies (way too many to name here), to no avail. Whenever I tried a strong remedy (such as salt water gargle, oregano oil liquid dropped onto my tonsils and throat, oregano nasal spray, olive leaf throat spray, silver throat spray, lemon juice and ginger gargle, cayenne pepper oil, garlic oil and water gargle, Listerine gargle, and constantly drinking hot water with lemon juice, honey, ginger, and cayenne pepper, and taking several natural supplements, vitamins, and minerals), I found that the location of my sore throat would "jump around", like it was trying to run and hide from the remedy. My sore throat started on my right palatine tonsil, then it jumped to my left palatine tonsil, then to the area behind my soft palate up into my adenoids (pharyngeal tonsils), then it jumped to the base of my tongue (so it must've jumped to my lingual tonsils, which are located at the rear of the tongue) so it made the back portion of my tongue feel really painful whenever I swallowed, then it moved back to my right tonsil, then to the middle part of my throat (but not base of tongue this time), then to my left tonsil again. It was driving me up the wall, but then thank God I found a remedy that FINALLY worked, and eradicated all my symptoms once and for all! I read about the natural sugar Xylitol, which is effective in treating sinus and ear infections because it prevents the bacteria or virus from sticking to the body's mucous membranes. Well I thought maybe the Xylitol would have the same effect on a sore throat by preventing the bacteria or virus from sticking to the tissues in my throat and/or tonsils. If I could get rid of my sore throat, then most likely my body would stop trying to flush the bacteria or virus out with copious amonts of post nasal drip mucous and it would stop trying to flush the bacteria or virus out of my respiratory tract with coughing. I bought the Xclear brand of nasal spray which contains Xylitol, and the Spry brand of peppermints which contain Xylitol. I sucked on the Spry peppermints round the clockand I used the Xclear nasal spray several times throughout the day and before I slept. Of course I couldn't use them while sleeping, so when I woke up at night, to drink water or use the toilet, I would use the Xclear nasal spray and I would pop a few Spry peppermints in my mouth, to suck on before returning to sleep. I was thrilled when my sore throat began to feel better the first day, and within about 3 days of continuous Xylitol treatment, my sore throat was completely gone, and my coughing and post nasal drip were completely gone by the 6th day. I pray I don't ever go through this again, but if I do, XYLITOL nasal spray and XYLITOL peppermints will be my first line of defense!

A throat infection maybe? Take antibiotics if you think it is not normal cough as you usually have had?

Hi, I too have had this for about a month now. It lasted two weeks then I felt better only for it to return within a week. My throat is so sore and a constant cough. This morning my whole head was hurting like I had sinus and ear infection! I'm so tired and worn out. I just want it to go away. Anyone with any ideas please help. Thank you.

I have the same coughs that keep coming back often at night and after reading this site, I think that it may be caused by acid reflux, which at one point my ENT specialist did mentioned to me.

This is crazy! I'm going on 3 weeks and I was looking for answers to this insane virus! It hurts worse at night and right now I cannot even open my mouth very wide. Gargling with warm water and turmeric essential oil helps but will not take the pain completely away. I'm also sucking on Fisherman Friends cough drops which really helps, but again it will not go away!

Hi folks, I'm 32 weeks pregnant and have had a sore throat for almost 7 weeks now. Twice it has turned into a cold that has come and gone but the sore throat never goes away. Everything I read says if it persists for more than 2 weeks then see a doctor. I have been to the doctor at least 4 times and nobody can tell me what's wrong. They say a virus or bacteria wouldn't hang around this long, but yet I have another cold that started yesterday. I have been tested for strep twice, mono, had a throat culture and saw the ENT and nobody can find anything wrong. I don't know what to do anymore :( I am hoping this is one of those pregnancy things that will go away after I give birth, but I can't imagine going through labor sick. My sore throat has been switching sides, it is the weirdest thing, and when i told the ENT that he said he's never had that described to him before. I'm starting to feel worried and have forgotten what it feels like to be normal. I've tried claritin and flonase for over a week to see if I've suddenly developed allergies and that didn't work. I've been on omeprazole for my entire pregnancy and don't believe it's reflux related. After the scope, the ENT said there was no evidence of reflux. I sleep with a humidifier every night, I drink tea, I do sinus rinses, gargle with salt water, take vitamins daily, and every other thing I can think of. I am running on E and just want to feel better!
