Hi there ladies. I had a complete hyst 20 months ago and, 6 months post op I woke up in the am to the feeling of heavy cramping, nausea and, yes, bleeding. Much of it was bright red mixed with clots and tapered off the last day to rust and brown blood. At no time would I call it spotting. It was almost as heavy as my periods used to be. I had my hyst at 38 after begging for it for years. I had hemorrhagic ovarian cysts and endometriosis from age 18 onward. After multiple surgeries to deal with the endo my former gyne(she was excellent, btw, and I changed drs only because I moved) informed me that I had so much scarring from the cysts rupturing and the endometrial tissue depositing itself outside of my uterus that I would never be able to conceive naturally. I mention this because that answer finally gave some useful information as to why sex always hurt me. Even when there was no penetration I would pay for having orgasm for up to 36 hours. The other component is that my pelvic floor muscles have developed in response to stress placed on them throughout the years by the combination of endo, regular heavy periods of 7 days, IBS, and daily life. Because scar tissue is inflexible and I have over development of the pelvic floor muscles, when I stress them, the tissues tear in direct proportion to the 'stretch' I subject them to. I always bled after penetration of any kind. I still do but have been able to improve my vagflex, as I call it, through varied means including physio(internal point release- that is accessed directly from anus or vag route, so be prepared and meet with your physio first so you are comfortable before they touch you!), and there are vag dilator products avail at pharmacies but I suggest going to a good adult store and spending your money on a thin vibrator with a slight bend at the tip. This works to dilate and you can use it to replicate the pressure point release that your physio does. As mentioned, I do still have problems with penetration and bleeding post sex and that has gotten better but not gone away post hyst. The 6 month hyst period remains unexpl. I did go into see him while the bleeding was occurring and he initially asked me if it could be rectal... That tune changed as soon as he examined me. I went for an ultrasound 2 weeks later, (why do they always wait the 2 weeks? Its like going to a mechanic with an intermittent problem that they never seem to find but that starts 5 min after you drive off). Nothing showed up. To be honest, I haven't followed up in person with my gyne due to being hospitalized for unrelated issues. I have not had a recurrence of that much heavy bleeding since but I have changed one thing that I believe has helped my system balance. I initially refused all hormone treatments because I had been there, done that, during the dark years prior to getting my hyst. I didn't count on the memory loss and concentration problems that would start and get worse over time. Eventually, I realized that going cold turkey wasn't working but I still refused to take any type of estrogen and or progesterone because they had caused me to have high blood pressure plus cardiac related problems in the past. That, and I smoke so they aren't really good choices. Stemming from research I was doing about loss of libido and vag dryness post hyst, I remembered that our ovaries don't just produce E & P, they also produce T... As in, testosterone. I realized that, in getting rid or my ovaries, the authors of the majority of my pain over the years, I had also gotten rid of the testosterone production in my own body. Cutting to the chace, a year after my hyst, I started taking LOW DOSES of testosterone and I feel more myself than I have in over 6 years. My ovarian function had been damaged by the rupturing cysts over the years. What works for me is a tiny shot once every 10 days. I already had facial hair growth and the shots haven't made it worse. I have to make sure I don't wait longer between doses though or my concentration problems resurface with a vengeance and I have even found myself thinking, should I be driving? My libido is back, yay! And my energy levels are way, way up. I have lost weight as well and depression symptoms I was having pre and post hyst have improved dramatically. What works for me may not work for you, but it never hurts to ask but never give up trying. IMPORTANT: If you or your partner find lumps, bumps or other irregularities that bleed, cause pain, get in the way or increase in size, whether you had a total hyst or just the Uterus removed, don't wait to call your dr. Likely this is a polyp( I believe that was my issue and the hormone has stopped it from happening since I started taking it) and those suckers can bleed like the dickens. If large and numerous enough, you could be in real trouble. They could be cancerous, but may be benign. It could also be a Bartholin cyst but those become really painful in a short period of time and have to be surgically removed. Bottom line: Be your most vocal advocate. If you don't ask your doc or push for more and better answers, you are the one who suffers. If you don't buy what one doc says, by all means, go get another opinion. It is called the PRACTICE of medicine for a reason. Above all, do not suffer in silence! That is not what we are supposed to do! Good luck and hugs from me.

Question for everyone who's put comments up about this. Have you all, or any of you had a TOTAL Hysterectomy- ovaries, cervix, uterus, lymph?

I have and It's been several months since my hysterectomy and I started having very light brown spotting. I told my Oncology GYN and he thinks it could be from my new stringent Yoga regiment. But I forgot to ask HOW it happens? Where's it coming from if there's is no more uterus to "slough" off before/during your period? Some cramping once I tried ANY sort of intimate activity. Ugh. Anyone?

I have opherectomy, hysterctomy, removal of cervix, ext. EVERYTHING. AND I'm on hormones to restrict the production of estrogen because of previous breast cancer and Lynch Syndrome. Anyone know anything about this. My spotting is just light brown and my cramping is annyoyinng but tolerable. What IS there to cramp? I'm thinking it's ligaments? And WHERE does the blood actually come from?

I had a hysterectomy like yours, and now I am having a full blown period.
I'm going to call my doctor in the morning and make an appointment.

I had my total hysterectomy with on ovary removed back in 1990, I had my second ovary removed in 2008. On Dec 4, 2016 I had a large amount of bleeding. Scared, came here looking for answers. A lot of this is what happened, I will update, not a lot of updates. So here is an update. First off, don't try to guess, GO TO A DOCTOR, DON'T MESS AROUND. I had a good talk and exam and another good talk afterward, this is what I was told.
This is not cancer, it is ok to be scared, but now relax.
It is severe loss of estrogen has caused the lining of my vagina to dry out. All of my healthy cells are gone and they keep on trying to replace themselves.
So the treatment is estrogen, I didn't like the idea of that, and then it was explained that our ovaries had generated it for years, now I can't and need help. There are good things to estrogen, including lower risk of heart attacks in women until they no longer have it in their system.
I don't have an option and will give this a try.
New treatment coming soon with stem cell, not covered by insurance, But... if I can once again sit comfortably, not wake up to a blood, and get my libido back it will all be worth it.
Again, if you are looking for answers, this is a start, but you have to be seen by a Dr to start on the right track. Good luck to you all.

Julie you reminded me of when I had mine also hysterectomy back in 92 so its over 20 years for me, but the pain I get in in my lower lumbar and the front of my lower tummy area,,,, the doctor I saw back then told me I had the 3rd worst case of endometrisos he had ever seen in his life..but after doing a laporocophy they found out the endometriosis was eating my organs.. well come to find out after all of this I recived a call from his office that said they found some abnormal cells but was told do not worry you should be fine,, but this trouble all started with a cyst in my ovaries and ladies this hurts especially when you have sex,,, and mine was the size of a grape ( back in the 90s ) ,most doctors would say that cant happen with the size of yours,, ( wanna bet ) as I told the doctor..- but about 2 months ago I was in the hospital for hip injury and found out I was very low on iron and doctors are concerned about internal bleeding and this I wonder also if this darn thing has come back after all these years,,,

I had a total hysterectomy 8 years ago and then in 2013 I had my left ovary removed. Just last night I've noticed that I'm bleeding and I had endometriosis and that's why I had the hysterectomy. I see there are a few of you experiencing the same symptoms. I can't get a hold of my GYN, because they're closed on Fridays. I don't know if I should go to the ER, or wait until Monday to get an appointment.
