:-( I too have a huge divot or dimple in the soft tissue of my left hip. I only noticed it a few months ago, and have had pain on and off in that hip for a few years. I am a rheumatoid, so I just thought it was part of the RA. I showed it to my Rheumatologist, who decided it should be investigated. I went through an MRI on Tuesday, and received the results today, which showed nothing remarkable.....I've been searching the internet nightly and stumbled upon the steroid injection site reaction phenomenon, and realized that I had a huge steroid injection last year in that hip, due to pain caused by degenerative changes in my SI joints. I had lost several pounds due to the medication I am on for my RA, and apparently this has made the defect more prominent and thus why I didnt notice it right after receiving the injection. Fortunately, it is a benign condition, and I am happy that it isnt anything invasive, and I dont believe that I would decline another injection, because the help that I received from the steroid outweighed this minimal side effect. Sometimes it helps to look at the positive side vs the negative. Just a thought.

I also had some steroid injections for pain in September on my upper back just between the shoulder blades. Some were deep and others closer to the skin. Last night while trying on clothes my husband notices the dimples, about 1cm wide and a tiny bit red. i panicked and looked for information, and i found this:

http://dermatology.cdlib.org/123/case_presentations/lipoatrophy/aviles.html

I then called my doctor to ask WTF, and the nurse lady said that this is normal, and usually goes away. I asked are you sure, she said yes. I am trying to be patient and wait, but i am going to see the Dr. again and ask him about it. The article says that they usually resolve on their own, so i hope so.

Either way, this article summarized what info i found on the internet.

Good luck to all.

The same thing happen to me. I had the injection in my hip and i ended up with a big crater. The doctor said "steroids are suppose to b injected directly into a muscle when it hits fat it eats it away". they gave me the injection IM. It should of been given as a Z TRACK injection. I looked up that particular medication and sure enough it is suppose to be given by Z Track. Thats where you pull all the fat to the side and injection directly into the muscle, then take the needle out and let the skin go.

Apparently, I had some sort of allergic reaction. There was a rash on my face, arms, neck and body and a general swelling, especially of my head (eyes almost shut). I received a steroid shot in the left hip a few days ago. That, along with a prescription cream, has greatly reduced the swelling but left me with pain in the hip near the injection site. This pain radiates down into my leg making walking even a few feet difficult. (It feels like a badly torn muscle.) While the swelling is much reduced, the rash seems to be getting worse. Is this something to be expected that will go away in time, or is another trip to the doctor called for?

I am soooo glad to find this blog.. I got a shot of Kenalog in my right buttocks oh about 8 months ago.. The indentation is getting bigger.. It is white and very sensitive... It hurts if I tighten up my butt... I went to the doctor and he told me there is nothing that can be done.. That the shot ate away my fat and muscle in that area! He said the skin will always be white there and the indention will always be there! I just don't understand why I wasn't informed of this at the time I was given the shot! I am such a skin person I would have turned it down and took the slower working pills instead! :-(

Wow that is just wonderful news! I just got a steroid shot Tuesday because of asthma... I was pretty much closed up. They gave me a breathing treatment and finished if off with a shot right smack dab on the butt! Then they shipped me off with some more steroid pills. I'll be sad if something like this happens to me but at the same time... It really did help over the past few days to get this asthma under control. I don't think I've ever bounced back so quick after an attack like this one. I'll def. be keeping an eye out for this problem tho. Cause I will be screaming at this guy!! He told me no side effects, in fact at first didn't even tell me what it was (except a steroid) I was doing all the questioning and talking....

I, too, experienced a horrible "sink hole" in my arm after a steriod shot. Doctor told me that it just happens sometimes. It started small, got much deeper and very sensitive. The skin would get burned when I was outside running or spent even a short time in the sun. Good news though....for whatever reason, the hole has began to get better and I would say it's about 97% normal again. The original shot was about 14 months ago.

I have the same problem. I got the shot like a year ago and the indent is getting bigger and bigger. my butt on one side is about a 1/4 indented. I also have a big hard welt in the middle that is black and blue. it sucks!!!!
I want to see if I could sue but no law office seems to want to take the case. I would use the money for plastic surgery if that's even an option :'(

I think it was two years ago when I started this little post but I want to bring it up to date by saying that the "divot" caused by the steroid injection on my rump has disappeard and has been gone for at least a year. I can't tell it was ever there!

I am so glad I read these posts. I broke out into hives like two months ago from some allergic reaction, and the doctor gave me a cortisone shot on my arm. About a month ago I noticed that the shot site was completely white and there was kinda a hole in my arm. Feels like there isn't much muscle there or fat. I guess that happens with some steroid shots. I'm still going to the doctor to see if she can do anything cuz it does feel sensitive and bruise like!

Had similiar reaction after 4 weeks. I was told common reaction. Not satisified.

I am 24 years old and received a steriod shot last year for a raash that would not go away on my body. I had the injection in my left hip and one day at a pool party I noticed this huge dent in my hip. Its gets worse each day. It is now skin on bone and it painful with the appearance of a bruise. I do not like wearing a btahing suit anymore! The doctor told me that this sometimes happens and they all the could do would be to file an incident report with the company. I was given to warning that this could happen, so before you get a steriod shot I would ask about the side effects.
