Hi all - I'm so glad I'm not alone!  Have had a really strange rhythmic buzzing inside my bottom for a couple of weeks now.  Haven't seeked medical advice as i thought the doc might take one look at me and have me sectioned!!!!   wot on earth is it?  I've never had it before.  I have IBS, drink decaf coffee and have done for years, had a small haemorroid about 10 years ago and have been through a course of physiotherapy on my weak pelvic floor muscles involving a tens machine.  If anyone out there has had a firm diagnosis PLEASE share!!!

Hi everyone.  I've got the same thing and don't have health insurance so I've not been to a doctor, but here is what I can corroborate:

I also had a virus that laid me out for a week prior to the "buzzing".  I had lingering congestion from it and at one point I blew my nose while on the toilet in the middle of a pretty big bowel movement.  Not the brightest thing to do I suppose.  By that evening, I get the "buzz".  Also, I've been under a lot of stress from being unemployed and sick, and my back has been been very sore from being in bed so much.  Occasionally, I get a small bit of blood after a hard stool and recently had one hemorrhoid that went away on its own.  I first noticed the buzzing yesterday evening, sitting down, following the consumption of a very large Coke, and its been with me all day today.  I drank 3 cups of coffee today (way more than usual), have been super gassy, and very tired (I traded 4 hours of sleep last night for a really good book).

So, while I'm not a doctor and urge you to seek a professional opinion if you are concerned, here are my findings and best guesses based on my own experience and upon reading this entire thread and a few other site posts:

I do believe it is a sort of nerve twitch triggered by muscle or tissue strain.  Probably people with a history of IBS or hemorrhoids are more susceptible, but that may just be because stress is the real culprit and contributes to all three conditions (IBS, hemorrhoids, and what I will call "anal spasms").  I think that long periods of inactivity (a week or more) may increase your chances of getting it, especially if followed by physical strain (ie. forced bowel movement, hard workout, heavy cycling, etc.)  I am guessing that caffeine, as a stimulant, might increase the sensation or prolong the length of time you get the spasms.  I'm not sure about the gas bit.  I think that was probably just my body's reaction to so much caffeine today and not directly related to the spasms.

My spasms are gone as I'm typing this.  What did I do?  Just tried to ignore it (difficult, I know), relax my whole body, and drink plenty of water or herbal tea (I had ginger tea).  I'm planning on getting more sleep tonight.

Is it serious?  Well, look at the beginning of the thread that started over a year ago.  Are those same people still here complaining?  I don't see them so I'm cautiously concluding that it went away for them fairly quickly (no one that I've seen has reported having it for more than a few weeks if I'm not mistaken).  This may also be why your doctors don't have an impressive medical term for it.  I would imagine most people put off going to the doctor longer than the spasms actually last.

If a medical professional does give somebody a clear explanation, I'd love to hear it.  Cheers all and good luck!

Weird response I know but mine felt like a buzz/itch... and something I've had for a few days anyway this response is weird but whilst in the shower I used a cotton bud and itched just round the anus area where it was irritating. Disgusting I know but gave me some moments of relief. obviously when out and about you can't do it but if like me it got so annoying you had to Google it then rash decisions had to be made..

I'm not trolling I'm n 18 year old male, no history of hemmaroids and what not just being homosexual I tend to have anal sex, I don't suppose that's to do with it just last time I had it was 8 days ago and it's been for around 4 days now, so possible connection..

Most of you will read this as. "homo get's weird feeling up his bum after having sex so just sticks something up it" ... well that's your choice either way I felt it as a buzz with a slight itch so like any itch or weird sensations I tried to get to it directly.

And as I said it isn't a permanently solution but does do me some good when alone in a room for a little while.

I've had this strange buzzing sensation in the rectum too. It's never painful but I've been suffering from Hyperventilation Syndrome which transpired on a train. I got a sudden sharp pain in my left chest and felt nausea almost immediately. Then I passed out! I think it is related to an inflamed chest cavity which is causing spasms and making me breath more rapidly. There isn't a day that passes where I don't feel ill at some point.  I can't give you any advice except that when you type in 'vibrations' and 'rectum' in Google - don't click on Google images!!! LOL :-)

I don't know the cause, but I had the same "buzzing" sensation and read somewhere to try taking a vitamin D supplement.  I did and the buzzing stopped within a couple of days.  So I would recommend you give it a try.

Hi everybody. I have been having the buzzing and vibration sensation in my anus for about two weeks. Reallly uncomfortable. It came on buzz every 3 seconds, which lasted 1 or 2 seconds at its worse.

I also had electric sensation on my skin on my bum, groin and veginal areal. very scary and disturbing. When I walk the buzz transfer to my bum as well.

I went to my GP and was refered to a neurologist. He did all kind of MRI related to my spine and brain. Found nothing! He did not have any explanation for it from neurological perspective.

He prescribed me a medicine called carbamazopine. I started it 3 days ago. I took half of the dose he wanted me to take to start with, with the hope to increase it to the required dose. This was due to the med side effect, that made me really drowsy.

To my surprise and disbelief, all my symtoms gone almost completely!! I am so happy about it, but at the same time worried that if i stop the med, they will come back.

So this is where I am standing. I am not sure what cause it, but I know this medicine stop nerves firing. One of the reason it is prescribed is for trapped nerves. so perhaps this is our issue.  ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** private e-mails not allowed*** Please read our Terms of Use

Hello,

I'm a 31 yr old male and have been experiencing a similar buzz/humming feeling in my anus area as well. Recently had a terrible flu. I wonder if it has something to do with that. I get scared that I won't be able to hold my bowles as it happens.

Wow not to sound like everyone else on this thread (but (pun intended) I am!) I have the vibrating sensation too!

I went to a rectal doc and everything! he put a little machine several inches up there and said everything looked great and it could be spasms (like someone else said- like you get in the eye- and could be stress related.

I will say this- I had started drinking coffee for first time recently (I have some fatigue issues and probably some IBS) and coffee A) helps me go when I can't go (i suffer from constipation) and B) gives me more energy

Think I'll cut down as well. Thanks ya'll... Wow I so am not logging into Facebook like it's asking me to do to post this. I'll stay as a "guest"
