I have been on Merformin for about eight months for PCOS. I just have had loose stool (very unusual for me as I am usually constipated) & these things twice in the last week. Thank you so much for your posts. I was really worried based on what other sites said until I found this. My pharmacy recently changed my pills from ones stamped with 142 to ones stamped with IP178. I am wondering if that has to do with this sudden change, especially after reading the post from the nurse about generic medications. Has anyone else noticed this, or does anyone else with this issue have the IP178 pills?

Yes, I take Metformin ER and Janumet XR - and never had these strange bean like things in my stool! It really had me alarmed and I still can't figure it out. I thought they were some kind of parasites but my Dr. told me they are rare in the US. I plan to take samples to the Lab.

I take metformin er and thought maybe that's what this was. Same everyone for he most part is describing. I do not eat dairy, sugar, grains, beans, or processed food. I know it isn't casein or beans, even though it looks like it. So if I assume it is the metformin, generic for glucophage which some of you ironically mentioned, then why is this suddenly happening? I've been on it for a long time. 8-10 years. Recently had dose lowered.

I have had the same problem with both my stools and when I vomit.  It is like a mini chicklet gum, both ways it expels itself.  I have vomited them, and actually almost choked while trying to expel it.  (I have an extreme gag reflex when brushing my teeth, so I tend to vomit, or gag more often than the average person.  No I don't have anorexia, or bulemia.)

I had thought it was corn, but not having any corn for a month, I knew it couldn't be corn.  It has a gummy texture, and when broken apart looks like cheese cake texture.  I have no idea what this can be, but reading peoples posts makes me less scared about what is the solution.  I am on some medication, but no gel caps.  I really don't know what to do about this problem, or how to describe it to my doctor.

Caseinator here. I have been dealing with this issue for 8 years and I now think that the pods are in fact undigested Claritin-D pills. I think they occur when I have foods that are hard for me to digest, such as casein and alcohol. So being aware of what foods I have trouble digesting, and then limiting or avoiding those foods, DOES help prevent the episodes of severe cramping and severe diarrhea that cause the pods to appear.

I recommend that EVERYONE on this thread put all the pills they take in warm water overnight and see if they resemble what you've been seeing.

Also on this thread is a contributor called stoolsleuth, and he/she actually tested the contents of his/her pods, with the following results:
Iodine, which turns purple or even black in the presence of carbohydrates, did not change from its normal yellowish color (negative).
Coomassie blue, which shifts from red to blue in the presence of protein, turned blue (positive), and in distinct clusters, not uniform.
Orange G, which is pretty worthless but does test for keratin, was negative (longshot anyway).
Finally, alizarin red, which turns from yellow-orange to red in the presence of calcium, turned bright red (positive).

He/she believed it was indeed casein because of the proteins and calcium, but later he/she also tested a generic Claritin-D pill (Walitin-D) after soaking it in water and got the same results. He/she reposted the new results and the new conclusion.

This person's testimony made me rethink my previous posts so I soaked a pill and it was pretty darned close to what I was seeing. In the actual pods, the size always varied (depending on how much of the pill had dissolved properly) and also in color (I think other foods in your system can easily affect the color of the pill casing). I'll also note that Claritin-D is not a gelcap. It's an oblong capsule

I wanted to share my new conclusion with the group just as stoolsleuth did. Keep in mind that I'm not saying Claritin-D is causing my problems. I have since been diagnosed with IBS and I have numerous intolerances, and those issues cause poor digestion of time-release pills like Claritin-D. I will also add that I had a colonoscopy last year and they didn't find anything else that would be causing the pods. My gastro doc recommended that I start taking the probiotic pill Align every day and increase my fiber intake. I can tell you that doing these things has dramatically decreased the pod episodes, as well as the cramping and diarrhea.

I still limit casein, but I've found some awesome dairy-digestion-enzyme pills called Dairy Digest Complete on Amazon that REALLY help when I do want to have the occasional ice cream sundae or slice of pizza. You take one or two before you eat and it helps your body break down not only lactose but also milk proteins like casein. I've done lots of tests where I eat cheesy foods and take the enzymes and then eat the same thing and not take the enzymes, and I go back to having cramps and diarrhea when I don't take them. I've also done the same thing with Align. I stopped taking it for a few weeks to see if it really was having such a positive effect, and slowly all my problems came back. Started taking it again and my problems decreased significantly. I still may have diarrhea even with Align and the enzymes if I overdo it, but when I do it's far less severe. I always make sure I take Align and the dairy pills before I go out to eat, since just about everything you get out is very processed and contains tons of casein (and God knows what else). Alcohol is still a trigger. But even people with great digestive systems get diarrhea after a night of drinking! So I just have to be mindful of it.

I've been taking Align almost every day and Dairy Digest Complete as needed for the last year, and it has been the best year EVER for my digestive health. I was reluctant to add more pills to my system, but I haven't had any side effects at all and the results made it a no-brainer. Actually, it has had one big side-effect. I have been getting sick a lot less since I started taking Align! Your gut is a big part of your immune system so helping your digestion helps your other systems work better too.

Again, good luck to all of you!

I am on Metformin and I told my doctor about having these pods in my bowels and he immediately knew what they were. He said that with Metformin the medicine is on the outside of the pills and when you take one your system absorbs the medicine but leaves a "ghost pill" which comes out in your stool. He said it is perfectly normal.

Okay so I've been reading about everyone saying they're on some sort of pill like metformin, and someone asked if anyone wasn't taking pills and having this white bean shaped thing coming out. the only pill i take is a tiny blue square for migraines so it can't be that. I noticed one of these bean shaped white things detached from my fluffy stool (i'm a vegan and poop once to twice a day and they're easy to pass) I thought it was weird and it floated. Flushed it down and thought nothing of it. A few weeks later (which is now) I had a random bout of diarrhea and noticed a bunch of them floating around. Been looking all over for info on this. Saw stuff about casein, I'm a vegan and don't consume dairy obviously. I don't take any pills except for the little blue one mentioned above. So equally confused and probably just added to the confusion of people coming to the conclusion that its non digested pill casings. MY boyfriend said maybe its an actual kidney bean. I eat them from time to time with my rice :) but do i swallow them whole? NO they all get chewed thoroughly so what the heck are these things?

See if this answers the question. The page has a picture and the paragraph says:

"This was one accumulation of the many groups of pods found over the course of weeks. Identified by one lab as fecal fat. As large as 2" big. These will melt if left in the air or in water...very sticky...inside is a lighter beige color as noted in a surface scratch on pod in lower center. True pods will melt quickly...passed pills will not...different consistancy although they look remarkable similar. Immature pods start round but form into oblong shape following the shape of the intestinal pockets."

For those who deal with chronic back pain, getting through daily activities can be a real challenge. The pain can be so severe that it can completely change your life and make you physically unable to do the things you used to do. Even though the prognosis of life with back pain sounds grim, there is hope on the horizon. Chiropractic care offers a comprehensive solution to dealing with daily back pain and can help you find relief. Here are some of the cutting edge chiropractic treatments available today that are making a real difference in people's lives.

Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression

When pressure is placed on your spine, the discs can become herniated or bulging. A herniated disc is one that is leaking the fluid or jelly that is located inside the disc. A bulging disc is one that literally is bulging or increased in size in a particular area due to pressure. Both of these spinal situations are extremely painful and can cause chronic back issues. Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression relieves pressure on the discs and allows fluid back in.

MedX Medical Lumbar Rehab Machine

This unique machine offers a program that precisely isolates back muscles that have become weak and helps to strengthen them. When someone suffers from chronic back pain, the muscles that surround the affected areas are not utilized and eventually become weak. These weak muscles allow pressure to be placed on other areas of the spine creating herniated or bulging discs. This machine works to restore the strength of these muscles and relive pressure of the spine.

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy works on the same basic premise that is used by doctors to break kidney stones without invasive surgery. However, to help relieve back pain, Shockwave Therapy helps to initiate the growth of new, healthier tissue. The new tissue growth helps to strengthen tendons and ligaments that may have become damaged. One of the greatest advantages of this type of treatment is that many patients find significant relief from their back pain after only a few treatments.

Cold Laser Therapy

Cold Laser Therapy is utilized to encourage a faster rate of chemical reactions in the body that increase cell activity, thereby increasing new cell growth. Healthier cells help to promote a faster healing process and relief from daily back pain.

While the traditional practices of chiropractic care have always been helpful in relieving back pain, these new advances in the technology of back pain reduction have impacted the treatment plans of patients in a significant way. These programs offer a great deal of hope for a pain-free life for those who suffer from chronic back pain.

I saw one of these in my stool a few weeks ago and the auto-flush on the work toilet got rid of it before I could "fish it out". Just happened again, and I grabbed it with some tissue. It was soft and leathery ... and when I squeezed it a little, it squirted out a slightly more yellow inside (almost like a mozarella ball on the outside, with bree cheese on the inside). So came online to search and found this place. Yes, I'm on Metformin (glumetza version, mine's time release 1 big pill per day), for insulin resistance. If that's all it is, I'm VERY relieved. But then I wonder why, exactly.
