Another word for Infection is Inflammation. Have you ever been cultured for Group B Strep? No one ever talks about Group B Strep until the 3rd Trimester of a pregnancy... when they are swabbing your anus and vagina for the bacteria... but it lives in adults and can be transmitted to babies without knowledge. It is Not A Sexually Transmitted Disease. Group B strep may live harmlessly in the human body, which is called "colonization" or "carriage." During colonization, the organism lives on surfaces and membranes but does not invade tissues or organs. The most common site of colonization for group B strep is in the bowels. (Explains Hemmorhoids, lower G.I. issues) Approximately 20%-40% of women are colonized with group B strep in the vagina or cervix. (Explains UTI's, Vulvar Infections, and Other Embarrassing Changes) Colonization is more common in people with diabetes and those who are sexually active. In non-pregnant adults, group B strep causes bloodstream infection, pneumonia, abscesses, or infections of the bone (osteomyelitis). People with bloodstream infections usually have fever and aches, and they may have low blood pressure.(Sepsis) Bloodstream infections may lead to infection of the heart valves (endocarditis). Pneumonia causes shortness of breath and fever with cough. Abscesses are local collections of pus and may occur deep in the abdomen. Ouch!
