I need some advice here, and I need some advice from not only medical professionals, but also people who have been through something like this themselves. My boyfriend, whom I love to the end of this earth, recently kicked his opiate addiction and I could not be more proud of him! A doctor prescribed him suboxone the aid him in his addition and he could not have more positive reviews on how much it helped. But, I must add that upon being prescribed the suboxone he did not complete the proper testing (which I do believe is illegal), and his body has not responded well. I cannot blame much on anything other than he has not followed the instructions of the doctor and continued to drink alcohol while taking suboxone. Furthermore, he takes benzos regularly (2-5 5mg valuum daily) for anxiety, which is not well regulated nor managed by a doctor. He has been preparing himself to get off of the suboxone for the past month and his last day was 2 days ago. I should add that he was on the 'strips' and had been cutting them into smaller and smaller pieces over time. He is doing ok, all withdrawl symptoms to be expected, but the real problem is pain. His number one complaint has been the pain is back. I guess I should add that the opiate addiction began, as many do, after a serious back injury from falling off of a latter onto a fence. I'm not sure how to help him, or how to help him help himself. His pain is most definitely chronic and most definitely intense. Not only have I never experienced chronic pain or addiction, I also have a hard time understanding in general because I simply don't have that addictive personality you could say. His goal is to be completely drug free and from the research I've done and prior knowledge I do feel he needs to take one step at a time (get off one drug at a time). I also fear greatly the day that he stops the benzos (although necessary and good), because he suffers from severe anxiety.

What can I do for him? How can I help? Any advice at all is greatly appreciated! Thank you.
