Hi, so I'm hoping someone can save me a trip to the doctors and give me some sound advice... I had the implanon inserted approx. one year ago. Before then I had been on the Depo Provera Injection. For the last 3 years I haven't had a period, at all. Last weekend I started bleeding very heavily, more than what my periods used to be, and I was always on the heavy side. The blood is very dark, stringy. I haven't had any cramps, nothing to warn me that it was about to start. It lasted for about 3 1/2 days, then suddenly stopped. Yesterday it started again, same thing, really heavy, dark and stringy. No cramping. I feel rather lightheaded and weak, probably because my body isn't used to losing this much blood over a short time! :) . I'm about ready to go to the doctor and have the implanon removed, as the feedback I've read so far has been rather negative and it sounds like this could continue. Because I hadn't had a cycle in so long, the doctors inserted it straight away without knowing where in my cycle I was. I'm wondering if it would work for me to have the implanon removed, leave it for a couple of months and just use condoms, and then have a new one inserted.? Does anyone have any advice as to what could be causing the sudden bleeding after such a long time of not having periods? When I was talking to the Dr just before having it inserted about not having periods on the Injection, he told me it would be highly unlikely for me to have a period on the Implanon as they both consisted of the same hormones etc. I'm very nervous and wondering if this means the implanon has been moved and isn't working properly, or something of the like. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, though I have a feeling that by the time I recieve a response, I've probably already gone to the Dr's. This much blood freaks me out :) Thanks for your time, and thanks in advance for any responses.

I'v heard so much bad stuff about the implant, I'd probably wait a little bit longer. I'm on my second implant now that's due out next August but I'v never had any bad side effects granted the reason I'v found this page is due to the fact I'v now just came on my period for the first time in about 4 and a half years and thought woaah but I won't complain, maybe it is different for everyone the only downside I can think of with the implant Is getting it in and out isn't very enjoyable..

I wish there had been more replies to this post as this is EXACTLY what is happening to me the only difference is mine is not heavy bleeding, its somewhat light.  But after 4 years of not having a period even light seems heavy to me.  I see this was posted a while ago and I was wondering what your results were?  Did you go to the doctor?  Have it removed?  If you could share it would be greatly appreciated!!!

I am experiencing the same issue.  This is the third contraceptive implant I have had.  The first one was in tfor three years with no bleeding at all for first 2 years then light irregular periods for the final year.  2nd implant I had in for two years - the first year I had no bleeding then regular bleeding for 2nd year.  I took a break from any contraception and had regular heavyish periods for a year.  I then started on pill before going back for the implant.  At first I bleed very lightly (1 tampon mini) a day continuously for a couple of months.  I took a course of progestrone pills and since then about a year I have had no periods - occassionally a very light period (1 tampon mini a day) for 5 days.  Suddenly, I am experiencing the worst period I have ever had.  5 days of light bleeding, then I am currently on day 4 of heavy bleeding where I am changing ultra heavy tampons hourly and using a sanitary towel.  I am flooding occassionally and have continuous clots.  I sit on the toilet and they fall out 2 or 3 large ones each time.  If it persists  beyond 7 days I will seek medical help.  I think it is mainly due to a large amount of stress I am experiencing.  I don't have hardly any cramps or pain though.
