Hi mmm225, glad you had a good outcome. I am just wondering if you can provide the name of the doctor and city/state that the doctor is in. I am finding it very hard to find a doctor who has statistically performed a number of these surgeries successfully. Many thanks, Dennis

Hello mmm245, My name is Mindi. I realize your post is over a year old but I wanted to reach out to you and ask for more information about your doctor? I am also intetested in how you are feeling post-surgery? I have read the article you suggested. I am 31 years old and have had symptoms of Bertolotti's Syndrome since my early 20's. I have yet to find a competent doctor who really understands the condition. I have total fusion on my left transverse process (it took about 8 painful years to finally fuse and the pain is quite intense - I don't sleep) and now my right transverse process is indicating (on MRI, CT, and X-Rays) that it will be fusing in the future. After reading your post, I seriously thought, "Wow! This sounds like me!!" I have had absolutely no sucess with neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons. I went through Johns Hopkins and exhausted my resources and the doctors told me "good luck" and wished me on my way. They were convinced that since total fusion has occurred, why undo it? Pinched nerves are not fun. I have tried every treatment option available (physical therapy, steriod injections, medications, chiropractic, acupuncture, yoga, Rhizotomies, etc.) with absolutely no relief from the pain. Any information on your situation/medical help would be greatly appreciated. I feel rather helpless and hopeless so it was definitely inspiring reading about your experience. Thank you in advance for your time! Sincerely, Mindi

My husband has been suffering for years. Injections provide temporary, minor relief. He's been relying on pain medications but his mobility is limited. Please send the .pdf. Who was your surgeon? What hospital?

Hello, I posted on here a little while ago and I have since had surgery for Bertolotti's Syndrome. The doctor who operated on me is a neurosurgeon at UCLA in Santa Monica, CA and his name is Dr. Duncan McBride. He is extremely knowledgeable on Bertolotti's and has done many surgeries to correct the deformity. I am three weeks out from my surgery and have about 80% pain relief - the pain I have now is from the surgery. I had complete fusion from my left transverse process to the sacrum. Dr. McBride performed a minimally invasive spinal resection on the area. Basically, he went in and undid the fusion. It took about 2 hours and I left the hospital shortly after. I was nervous about that but it worked out fairly well and was not too much of a problem. Prior to the surgery (11 years), I had met with many surgeons who had no idea what they were looking at and didn't know how to treat the syndrome. I'm not sure if this info helps or not but this doctor is absolutely wonderful and has excellent bedside manner. He is worth traveling to for the surgery if you live far away. I hope that information helps because it is a very frustrating and painful condition to live with every day.

How long did it take for you to recover from the surgery?
What did they do besides trying to make it anatomically correct?
Did they do anything else during surgery?
