I had a 3-hole hernia, 3x6" mesh inserted, 3" incision above belly button. The area was really swollen, likely with a seroma, for weeks. At 7 weeks, part of my incision was still oozing, but it was clear fluid so doctor said it wasn't infection. I'm almost 8 weeks post-surgery now and finally the swelling and oozing has stopped. My belly almost looks like its old self. I wish the surgeon had just told me right off the bat that it can often take this long. I wouldn't have been so concerned and impatient. Aw well, happy ending. :)

I had an inguinal hernia repair on the 19th November. The block went into my leg so received no benefit from that, my leg was numb when I came around. The nurse told me to get out of my bed and try to walk on doing this I collapsed. The nurse tried 3 more times telling me I cannot lie in bed all day. Anyway collapsed a further 3 times and omitted to hospital for a week until the pain was under control, I had been given the wrong medication for 4 days. Left hospital in a wheel chair with the aid of walking sticks to get about. third week and still have swelling along the 110mm incision and in particular a hard what feels like gristle in the middle of the incision. Asked doctors who told me this is normal and will settle down but did not say how long to settle down. It feels like the hernia is back and i am not going through that again. So more trips to the doctors and physio to be told it is fine.

I had a liver resection about a year ago and developed two rather large incisional hernias. I had it repaired by a local surgeon. Unable to repair it laprascopically he made two incisions. Two months later the hernias returned and the hernia repair surgery was a total fialure. I was referred to Mayo Clinc who repaired a total of five incisional hernias. The amazing surgeon at Mayo was able to perform the repair laproscopically, however it required 17 entry sites and spanned my entire abdominal area. The mesh was connected with screws to the muscle walls and the recovery has been slow and painful. I have since been plagued with constipation. When advising my doctors I was told to add a fiber supplement and to eat fiber rich foods and drink liquids. I have done so religiously, however, still have problems with constipation and pain. I wonder if everything is functioning as intended or if there are other problems. Has anyone else experienced these problems? I don't want to rely on laxatives.

An abdominal hernia occurs due to the laxity of the muscles and skin of the abdominal wall and repair entails strengthening of these structures by reinforcement with a mesh. As a result of this you will feel some abdominal tightness following the operation which might last a couple of weeks. Moreover, because of the mobilization that is required during placement of the mesh, you will feel some swelling and pain in the region overlying the hernia that will take about 3-4 weeks to resolve. The actual period of discomfort might continue a bit longer. See http://en.allexperts.com/q/General-Surgery-2076/hernia-surgery-1.htm

I had 2 abdominal hernias, and a fairly large sheet of mesh was implanted, to prevent further hernias 41/2 weeks ago. It was extremely painful. Before the surgery I was training kickboxing, I was running, doing yoga, and crossfit. I had a decent 6 pack...It wasnt until a week ago, I could kinda see my 4 pack in my upper abs, but it is not as definite as before surgery. However, My lower abs still appear swollen as well as my lower back...I am 4 days into working out , and really watching my diet, trying to minimize any belly fat to see if this is swelling or what. It is very discouraging, and I have no idea for the potential length of time this will last. I can do cardio just fine, but yoga is painful, as well as isolated ab moves and crunches. I am going to wait another week, and if I still have this extra belly, I will contact my doctor, I was never given a clear estimate on how long the swelling lasts!
