I am having a very similar problem!

I woke up Saturday morning, and the top layer of skin had dried out and there were cracks everywhere. I removed the skin with a towel. I always have dry flakey lips, and there is always this layer of yucky dry skin that never really gets resolved, but this was definitely worse than normal.

My lips are significantly swollen, and mildly itchy. Around the edges of my lips are kind of like a dry ring.

I can sit here, and I feel throbbing in my lips. It is kind of scary not to know what it is. I kissed my husband goodbye on his forehead this morning, and I couldn't feel his skin! So now I realize that they are numb too! What the heck is the problem here????

I have been suffering from this problem. Since I have red the postings I realize it may be the edemia thing that was mentions since I was diagnosed with that about 6 months ago after having swelling itching and redness on other parts of my body. I also have been enjoying chardonnay wine in the evenings and that could be a contributor. And was recently diagnosed with food allergies. I tend to ignore the allergies and choose to eat. I am allergic to things like lettuce cabbage carrotts wheat and chicken. So i guess I will continue with the Allegra eat drink and have swollen red lips.

I am a 37 years old man. I am getting swelling on my lips for the past 3 weeks. There are 5 characteristics I have noticed:

- swelling appears EITHER on the top OR the bottom lip. Never on both together.
- swelling is localized in one area of the lip (left, middle, or right), and happens with less than 5 minutes warning i.e. just before it happens, the area hardens and I know it will swell. There does not seem to be a pattern as to where the swelling will happen.
- the swelling lasts upto 8-16 hours, and antihistamines don't help control it
- I have now had this about 10 times in the past 3 weeks, and it is becoming more frequent now (now reaching one incident a day).
- the size of the swellings now is lesser than it used to be earlier. Having said that, the lip seems to swell to twice its size now.

Am feeling a bit scared - is it cancer, etc? Can anybody shed light on what this could be.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I have also been suffering from various stages of swollen, cracking, oozing and bleeding lips with rashy dry skin around my mouth for about 2 months now. My research online has not led me to a connection to any serious health problems. I am not quick to believe that I am one of the small minorities that have some rare disease (although it has entered my mind). I have always been very healthy with no allergies and rarely get sick. For those who are in misery as I am, I've been trying to narrow causes down, here is what I have so far:

1. I found one website that talked about sucralose (splenda) as being a possible reason. I started having these symptoms shortly after I started consuming a larger than normal quantity on a daily basis. I stopped using it completely about 2 weeks ago but haven't really seen an improvement yet (many on the website said it took them months), so I don't know if that is it yet. If interested, here are the sites:

http://www.foodanddiet.com/NewFiles/splenda.html

2. I have been told that I have a high yeast count in my body, although I do not get the infections that go along with it. I have never been much of a supplement taker, but I am going to try to take something to lower the yeast levels, like Acidophilus (contained in yogurt).

3. One item I did find online was linked to thyroid problems, but this is usually accompanied by other symptoms, like weight gain & lack of energy, etc. (which I don't have). I mention this because it is fairly common and could be of interest to someone.

4. I also use the "semi-permanent" lipcolor mentioned by someone else on this site. I have never had a problem with it in the past, but you can develop allergies at any time, so I am going to stop using that as well.

5. If you are in need of immediate relief, I just followed the recommendations of other people on this site and tried taking a loratadine (antihistimine) tablet, THANK YOU! The swelling drastically improved within 1 hour.

I am going to see my doctor again next week, but I am not expecting much. If something looks like it is working, I'll be back to share.

Hi,

I have been suffering from swollen, cracking, burning, oozing and bleeding lips for about 2 months now. It was so bad, I couldn't smile and didn't want to leave the house. Yesterday, my doctor suggested that it could be my toothpaste (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is the chemical found in most toothpastes which has been linked to lip swelling), he suggested using baking soda, or a natural toothpaste like Toms of Maine.

He also said that it could be my long lasting lip color (or topcoat) that I had been using. I stopped using both and there has been a drastic improvement. Here are some of the other things that I found in my research that can cause this type of problem:

1. Sucralose (splenda), this applied to me because I had just drastically increased my intake. If you would like more info on this (on the page, use control F and type in "lips"), here are some sites that I found:

http://www.foodanddiet.com/NewFiles/splenda.html
http://www.belicove.com/archives/beliblog/000651.html

2. High body yeast count can cause this type of problem, I am going to try Acidophilus or Oregano oil for this.

I was so desperate and doctors weren't helping, I really hope that this helps someone.

I moved to a new city 2 weeks ago and symptoms started. 1st a slight dry chapped area on top lip then serious chapping then swelling starting on right side bottom lip traveling left then to top lips where it has stayed for 7 days. The skin peels and weeps alot, too.

I am very healthy, take no drugs and have not used a "new" lip product in years. Don't even use lipstick.

Help! I look hidious especially in the morning when I wake. I have to interact with people all day and they are treating me like Typhoid Mary.

Swelling of the lip is an allergic reaction could be from anything talk to your doctor and get a blood test or prick test done for allergies. The doctor will most likely give you zyrtec. When it is already swollen and huge once you are sure it is allergy related in bad cases you can go to the hospital and get an injection of benadryl and cortisone this usually takes swelling down in a couple of days. If it starts as a small red bump then begins weeping it is a cold sore. If you have a cold sore go to the website fonoils.com and get the H Balm it is a combo of organic oils and it drys the area out extremly quickly cold sore will go away in about 2 to 3 days, really quicker but you won't believe me until you try it. I don't work for this company but I have had both of these problems and found the soulution to both and wanted to help someone else.

Hi everyone,
I have been having the very same reactions and symptoms as you all since May. My doctor has nothing to tell me. I'm going for food allergy testing...

After the swelling goes down (which antihistamines do not help...) my lips are dry and cracking.....polysporin helps. I put it around my mouth and it does help it heal. I also keep my lips moisturized with lip balm.

I do not use the long lasting lipstick, nor do I use splenda.
I have been awake since 4am because just under my bottom and above my top lips have been oozing.
I'm seriously getting annoyed, worried...I feel ugly and I am staying home today because because I look so hideous. There has to be some answer here for all of us.

Hello, everyone. I also have had problems recently with swollen, tingly, painful, chapped, scaling, lips with tiny little sores. At first I thought it was a food allergy, and then ezcema of the lips, but now I think it might be an allergy to something in Blistex medicated lip balm with SPF 15. In any case, WHAT HAS WORKED for me is applying a thin layer of hydrocortisone creme/ointment twice daily until the problem clears, and whenever I suspect that the problem is coming. Wait until it dries completely, and then moisterize if needed. When my lips were really scaly and no lip balm or gloss would do, I just left them dry (but stayed in the house) and everything eventually fell off with repeated hydrocortisone applications. I used Soventol HC from the pharmacy, but I'm not sure if it's available elsewhere; I'm not sure what concentration the equivalent would be, but maybe start with the lower dosage. Good luck! I hope this helps.

Hi, this has happened twice to me, the first time i was so scared, but i have had the swollen lips thing, but yesterday i also got a swollen eye and just the top lip, i looked so grose! I could only put it down to hayfever, as this seems to be a problem every spring for me, so i took an anitihistime and the sewlling was reduced within an hour. I have never experienced anything like it with hayfever before tho. Could it be something else besides hayfever? Im not allergic to any foods (i dont think).
thanks
