I started getting pains in the throat about six weeks ago. The pains started at the very bottom-front of the throat (near the space between the collar bones) but moves to other parts of the throat - sometimes at the left side of the thyroid, then at the bottom-left of throat (both of which when pressed w/ my finger causes pain).

I occassionally get a little hoarse but it clears. There's a little pain when I swallow, but usually if I turn my head to the left while swallowing there's no pain.

I have no other symptoms - normal temp, very little coughing/sneezing.
I can't feel any lumps.

I've searched the web for similar instances of this condition but haven't found anything this bizarre (wrt the fact that the pain moves to different areas of the throat).

Hi, how are both of you doing? My pains subsided ~~ two weeks after posting the initial info. Then about two weeks ago I went to a holistic M.D. (mainly concerning high TSH levels) who did a digital exam (pressing and probing with his fingers) on my thyroid.

Well, the pains returned the next day :(

I've since had an expanded Thyroid blood panel, and just two days ago an ultrasound. Waiting for both results.

I hope you both are still on this forum. I'll try to check back more often, and will post the results when I get them.

Cheers - GA

I'm having the same problem too. Pain is at the bottom of my throat right now and it hurts to the touch as well as hurts when I swallow. It started at the top of my throat, left side, then moved to the right side and now at the bottom.

What were the results of your tests? Did you find out what was causing this?

You all described my symptoms to a tee. The bottom of the throat thing is happening to me right now. Yesterday, I thought I strained my neck or something and now it so sore that it hurts to the touch with my finger on the outside of my throat. Did anyone find out anything yet?

I had this happen for almost 6 weeks and was told to try Mucinex D (must get it at pharmacy counter) and Motrin. After 3-4 days of Mucinex D and Motrin the pain, swelling, and swallowing discomfort is gone and I no longer need the Motrin. I think the trouble was from post nasal drip and moved when I was sleeping (different side from where drip was accumulating). I feel SO much better and plan to cancel my ENT appt!!! :-D

My pain started 4 month ago, pain on side of neck taveling toward my ear, even my tooth was painful. I suffered it for 3 months and decided to go to the doctor, by this time the pain had moved to the other side.

It become much more painful to swallow as did the pain when I ate solid food. There was a sensation of a lump every time I swallowed. The doctor put me on anti biotic and there was no respose to that after a strong 10 day dose. He then refered me to the ear, nose and throat clinic, which he rushed through for me as my appointment for that was going to be another 3 months away. No way could I cope with the pain that long, it would even get worse at night.

I recieved the results of my blood tests and everything came back normal. I decided to try an anti acid table from the chemist due to some posts I read about acid reflux, and after 4 days the lump sensation went away, but the pain travelled again to the front of my throat and not the sides anymore. I have an appointment tomorrow for the ENT and hope I get some answers. as I type, my throat hurts when I swallow my own saliva. I feel healthy in every other way. I am actually beginning to think it is viral.

If i find this blog again, I will tell you what my results are from the ENT. I hope I can help some one as I am at my witts end panicking about everything it could be or couldnt be. take care

I have returned from the ENT today, with the result of Acid Reflux, I have been given medication for 3 months to see if the pain goes. If it is still there after 3 months, then more investigations. If pain is away or improves, then the meds are working, and i have to continue on them for another 6 months. The healing process of this can take months. I got a camera put into my nose, down my throat to see if there was any lumps or masses, but nothing there, thank the lord!!!!! The doctor sprays the nose to numb it, some fluid will trickle down the throat and that area will become numb. I never felt a thing, the process was over in about 30 seconds.

I hope this helps others if they are having the same problems. I was at my witts end!!!!!! (If you know what I mean). I just hope the medication workes and I can put this passed 6 months behind me.

I was also told to change my diet as life changes are a must. Drink plenty of water all day and especially with your meals. Cut back on coffee, but you can have decaf if you really want. Basically you can not live life that way (cutting out all bad foods) but make some changes to your diet, because in the information sheet there was a section saying that if you ignore this problem it could potentially develop into cancer. Take your symptons seriously do no ignore pains that last longer than normal, I would say 2 weeks at most. I am no doctor!!!just get it checked out what harm is it if there is nothing to report. I left my condition for months before I went to the MD, that is why I am in this much pain with my throat.
Sorry i just wanted to stress that, I have been going through hell.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-S

Hi All,

My problem turned out to be thyroid nodules. What was (and still is) happening is that the nodules rub against the nerves in the neck/throat causing all sorts of mayhem. Mostly now my voicebox aches if I speak too much - the result of the nodules aggravating the nerves in that area.

I had my left-side thyroid removed Jan2008 - the pains all disappeared. Then, 9months later they returned - due to nodules in my right thyroid lobe.

Let me tell you all, the above info is the result of MANY tests, an operation, and finally a endo doc that knew what the hell they were doing.

I'm still trying to find some way to shrink the nodules. I have been partially successful with switching to Armour Thyroid hormone instead of the synthetic stuff.

It's been a long time with these throat pains - but at least I know what the cause is.

Good luck to everyone with your own search for answers.
