A stent is placed for a number of reasons...1. When removing the stones inlammation can occur I.e. Swelling, which can block the duct, 2. There may be residual stones so just to be sure a stent is placed to avoid the agony of passing a stone. I too was very uncomfortable when they put in the stent, but around day 10 I was back to normal. I have my stent removed on the 20th and will keep you posted on the recovery. Also, when doing a gall bladder removal the reason they do not do an MRI on every patient prior to the surgery is bc only 1 out of 10 will have retained stones, they used to do it to everyone but insurance companies stopped paying for it so now it's a wait and see thing.

Quick question do you know if this is malpractice? I had the same problem and ended up having 3 surgeries in one week because of the stapler not working correctly.

I had bad on and off pain in my upper andomen for 4 months. One night the pain was severe. I got thru the night and the next morning while driving to work it started so I drove myself to the ER. After some test and the doc telling me i was yellow, i was admitted. After a slew of tests they discovered a large gallstone blocking my biliary duct. They tried to remove it but it was unsuccessful. They put a stent in so the bile would be able to drain past the stone. After 4 days i was teleased and sent to a doc who specializes in removing stuck stones. He removed it a few days later. I don't know why docs talk to people when they are in the recovery room because you dont remember anything. Luckily my friend was there who filled me in the next day. He left the stent in in case the gallbladder throws more stone so they wont get stuck. I have a consult next week with a surgeon to schedule the gallbladder removal. This has been a crappy experience. Cant wait to be done with it and get rid of the nausea and fatigue.

I had my gallbladder removed was sent home with drain after bile duct damaged over the course of a weekend bile leaked inside of me because drain was not working. I became jaundice and had infection. Had to stay in hospital 17 days. Had to be washed out, had two stomach drains, under went 3 ERCP to put in stents in.. stomach drains in for 4 weeks, I am dreading having the 2 stents out.
