Wow, what a relief to see all these posts. My son is 2 1/2 and is having the same problems. Coughing fits only at night and wakes up like an alarm clock at 3 am every morning coughing so hard that he vomits. The doctor tells me the same thing.....allergies or asthma. I run a humidifier in our room at night and it doesnt work either. They gave us an inhaler to try but said that it could make him very anxious if we use it in the middle of the night. We are going for a second opinion next week. I still dont want to believe that my two year old has asthma......thank you for all your posts, I dont feel so alone anymore.

Again, it is certainly helpful to read all of these posts and to know we aren't the only ones out there dealing with the coughing spells at night. My child is only 7 months, though, so do any of you know if Singulair can be used on infants this young. He's been waking up 2-3 times a night for three weeks with these coughing spells. The doctor prescribed an inhaler last week, but it doesn't seem to be helping. Like all of you I just want to figure out how to help my baby feel better. Thanks for all of your posts.

I am an nearly single daddy (mum works in another state), typing in the middle of the night with my 2.5 year old daughter sleeping besides me. From 1 year old she coughs for one hour every night almost surely in fall, and sometimes in other seasons. She usually coughs from 10pm to 11pm, but today she coughed from 1am to 2am. Sometimes the cough is so bad she vomits.

I guess it is asthma. Her cough season is parallel to my seasonal allergy, and we run a family pollen allergy history. Thank you all for your posts.

Wow, I had no idea so many other people were dealing with this also. My daughter had RSV at 3 months old and was hospitalized for pneumonia. She is 3 now and since that time, every fall and winter, we deal with the night time coughing, pneumonia, bronchitis, you name it. I finally had to change pediatricians because everytime we went to her dr, he kept giving her some decongestant c**p. I couldn't understand this since, half the time, there was no congestion at all. We finally saw an allergist and at least he listened to the symptoms and tried to help. He put her on Singulair but my daughter was, unfortunately, one of the people it made kind of crazy emotionally. We started seeing a new pediatrician and he came up with a diagnosis that made sense. Acid Reflux! He asked us all kinds of questions about the cough and what worked and didn't work and at the end, that's what he came up with. She also does have some seasonal allergies so she is also on Claritin. She takes the Axid twice a day and the Claritin once a day and it really seems to work! That's not to say we don't have our episodes but it is not half as bad as it used to be.

Same thing for me, my 2 1/2 year old has coughing fits every night that sound very phlegm-y, he sounds like he's going to choke at times. This has been going on for 2 months now. Over the last two months, he has taken amoxicillin, omnicifin, which he's been on for 7 days and she told us to stop today and change to bactrium....SERIOUSLY! The whole time he's been taking z cough, which the dr says is fine for him to take that long. He will accasionally have these fits when he lays down for his nap also and will wake up sweating from coughing so much, but with a low temperature (around 97.1). The dr. has also talked about allergies, but I'm not buying it...his 1 year old brother started doing the same thing 2 weeks ago. The strange thing is they are fine during the day, no coughing, nothing (they are occasionally red eyed from lack of sleep). I'm taking them both to another doctor today for a second opinion. I will continue to check back here to see if someone has resolution. >;) >;)

My daughter is almost 4 and just started this coughing at night the other day. I'm wondering if its allergies in her case since we stopped using the A/C several days ago since the weather finally got cool. We are in Orlando, FL I will go ahead and take her to our doctor this week and see if he has any suggestions. Here is some info I found about this.

The weird thing is she seems fine during the day, but then at night time when she is laying down is when it starts to happen. I would say she is asleep for about 4-5 hours. I sounds like she needs to cough it up, but she refuses and swallows. I have listened to her chest when this happens and you can definitely hear rumblings inside. If I find the solution I will let you know.

My daughter is going through same thing. Initially it started with Bronchitis, then inhaler finally asked us to start using Singular. We gave up and went to Homeopathic medicine. Initially it was not working, nowadays it seem to work after 4 months of struggle.

One thing is that after getting an Air Purifier, it has been much better.

I am relief by reading all this posts that my wife and I are not the only one. This is the reason I just start typing on the search bar saying my son keeps coughing at night. My son diagnosed asthma when he was a year and half. Since then every time winter comes he gets sick. We are in England until Aug 2010. We try to keep him home most of the time and if we go out side we make sure he wears thick cloth. He has been given all the asthma medicine you can think off but one day we took him back to the hospital and different doctor said he has no asthma. He told us it just seasonal allergies. What really makes me so sad is just watch him cough every night and I can't do anything. We even tried giving him honey with tea and it did not really stop his cough after he goes bed. If anyone has a better solution for this, please respond for kids sake. Thanks.

I have read that germs in early childhood are actually very good later in your life. If a child is kept in too clean environment then he will not develop antibody for many disease. However this doesn't mean that you have too let your child dirty all the time. Some normal control will be satisfying for their bodies to develop properly.

Get real please... asthma is a life threatening chronic condition that cannot simply be put down to environmental issues. If it could be eradicated by cleaning your house and de-stressing, we'd all have happy, healthy children. It is hereditary, in our case triggered by viruses, and very difficult to control.

Do what you're child needs you to do? Yes, I will thank you - and the only thing that controls his asthma is steroids, not ideological objections to conventional medicine. Invest your pedantic energy elsewhere and leave parents struggling with asthmatic babies alone.

I read everyone's post here as well as on other sites b/c our 4 yr old has been doing this "forever" (b-4 he turned 4). We thought it w/d leave b-4 he turned 2. I'm seeing how in most ppl's posts that drs r saying that it can be allergies or asthma. Our doctor told us to get rid of the rug in his bdrm; this is something we had been talking about for a while b/c as you know, rugs create a lot of dust and can cause these problems. I really believe the answer for us is not medicine but a change of eating. I saw alot of testimonies from parents whose children are vegetarians and they stated their children never experienced colds or any of these other things. I wish I c/d tell u the same w/us since we are vegetarians but the fact is that u cd be a vegetarian and still not eat properly. These parents whose children never got colds truly eat right; they juice at least 2x's per day and they make sure they don't eat processed food; or white sugar, bread, etc. We (my household) are a little bit too lazy. I think I need to "get with it" and start juicing carrots every day for my children. We don't eat meat but we eat too many snacks (even though our snacks are organic; sweet is sweet & too much is too much). Our children love the carrot juice; if you're children never had it, u can get them to like it if you also add some juiced apples in it. Look up this website on eating: www.hacres.com I pray we all have completely heatlhy children b/c it was never intended for our children to suffer like this. It's a shame and confusing and frustrating; not to mention scary.

I am the "almost single Dad", I am so happy to post an update again in just a few days.

After I found that my daughter's winter night coughing follows the blow of warm air from the heater vent, I deliberately went to basement for mold. It is called "Stachybotrys Chartarum" and made my family constantly sick for a winter several years ago when we lived in an apartment, so I am familiar with it. It grows on damp card board box or composite board furnitures. I instantly found one box with it and removed. The second day I found another box and removed. The very next day my daughter's night cough got better. And the day next, she stopped night coughing and slept happily.

So for my daughter, it was pollen allergy in autumn and mold poisoning (and allergy) in winter. I hope this information helps. If you find the cause of your toddler's coughing, please post your story so other parents can benefit.

Ok well we just moved to new apt because my almost 3 year olds dr told us that his coughing spells were mold related. It seems to be worse now that we moved. She put him on and inhaler and oral meds for allergies. But what i don't understand is how this all the sudden just start. He has never had any problems before. I have been sending the Dr e-mail trying to figure out what to do. My little boy wakes himself up at night coughing and sometime eventually vomitting. He coughs through out the day but not as hard. So i am just worried and stressed because i don't know what to do for him. Any help would be wonderful!

I am SOOOO relieved to find these blogs. My 3-1/2 year old boy has had these same coughing jags. They start with a dry, barky cough. His throat must either swell or shut a bit because he wakes up totally freaking out, stomping around and screaming, to the point of throwing up. Our dr has prescribed prednisone, a steroid, that opens up the throat, but sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. We've tried everything: Triaminic cold and cough, Delsym, Prednisone, Claritan, Flonase - NOTHING helps. Our pediatrician too says it's just allergies and he has a lot of post-nasal drainage down the back of his throat, but we need solid answers b/c my husband and I are ready to lose our minds being up in the night with him. Usually within 2-3 days the cough loosens and

We have an appt next week for an ear, nose and throat specialist and these posts have really empowered me to look into chronic rhinitis or acid reflux. We tried withholding milk but that didn't work. For our son, we do suspect it is allergy related b/c my husband and I both suffer with excessive drainage and allergies. It's just frustrating when the allergy medicine isn't enough.

It's maddening and you feel so bad for the little buggers.....hopefully more parents find this website and learn as I did. Thanks to all. :-D
