Thank you for making me feel not alone in all of this process. I am currently on day 6 and by your guide not looking forward to tomorrow lol this gave my mom and I lots of laughs and reassurance that I'm not crazy in everything I've been feeling since my surgery. Thanks!

Hi, I'm 29 and 22 days post op tonsillectomy. I have to say by days 4 to 6 I wanted to die. The only thing that helped me was to get in a steamy hot shower. I couldn't do anything cold, it just made everything worse, so I did warm soup, teas, and warm water. Tons of water. I even took my liquid pain meds and antibiotic while in the shower because the steam helped me swallow. By day 14 I way on cloud 9 and pain free....day 18 I began to have horrible molar and jaw pain again, it's still so bad I'm back on the Norco. This recovery is worse forme due to my type 1 diabetes and Myasthenia Gravis. I'm really hoping to feel better soon.

I am on day 9 now including day of surgery.

Day 1 pain 2-3 out of 10
Day 2 pain became off the chart because my whole body was sore because of the anestiologist, rigors, or a bad wake up. Couldnt get around without help from day 2-4. Throat and ear pain was 3-7 out of 10.
Day 5 about the same as before.
Day 6 little better. I went into work briefly. Pain at night 4-5. Daytime pain 3. Went off pain meds to Tylenol Extra Strength.
Day 7 went into work half a day. Pain at night 4-5. Very little daytime but didnt want to push it.
Day 8 went to work half a day. Very little to no day pain. 3 pain at night.
Day 9 worked most the day. Day pain, almost none. Now I just need to get to sleep, its the worst part.

My tips would be: constantly eat ice chips (sonic ice was it for me). Drink a lot, a lot. Try to eat 3 meals a day.

Foam ear plugs helped the ear pain a lot. Taking meds on time is a necessity, set your alarm.

The only thing I will miss is watching cartoon network all night high on pain meds.

NOBODY mentioned a bottle of cloroseptic spray. Also, the ENT surgeon prescribed lidocane mouth gargle stuff. These 2 things decreased the pain on the outside...... unfortunately only the pain pills helped the pain in the ears. I am 38 years old, on day 21 of recovery. I am weak, and can only eat soft foods like noodles, rice, pudding, jello etc. It takes longer to heal and is more painful the older you get........so for me, absolute hell. I'm tired of being lazy, Im off all pain meds except Advil. It still feels like Im choking when I sleep flat on my back. AND..... I had a second uvula removed during the tonsilectomy. It has grown back. I will have to get it removed for the 2nd time. I am terrified. This experience has felt like a violation. Like mouth rape. It should not be legal. It feels like I am getting tatooed on my ear drums and my soft pallet. I cried like a baby day 7/8/9/10/11/12/13/14. Went to the E.R. 2 times. Had to get pain meds, antibiotics, fluids, and anti nausea medication through an I.V. both times. I felt like it would be better to be dead. I asked the ER doc to put into a medically induced comma for 2 weeks.....what ever the cost. He laughed, but I was serious. I asked if he had his tonsils still,"yes" he said. FIGURES. I have yet to reap the benefits of my decision. Hell absolute hell.

I had my tonsillectomy done at the age of 32 because of tonsilloliths. Honestly, I thought it was going to be bad after reading all of the posts on here, but in hindsight, it was, at worst, like strep throat (very sore throat). I didn't have the severe pain in the ears or any post-surgical bleeding. My advice, take your pain meds, keep hydrated, eat whatever you can tolerate (per Dr.'s orders), and gargle with salt water in morning (that really helped me because throat will be dry and sore in the morning). I would definitely have this done all over again especially because I no longer have bad breath. I actually had to stop taking the Loratab elixir because it prevented me from falling sleep at night (my mind would keep running and I thought I was going crazy). So, I ended up taking Tylenol for pain instead.

Honestly, I don't even know, but I don't think so. I think it was with cautery.

You may call my ENT and ask him yourself. His name is Danny Wong, M.D.. He probably won't be able to speak on phone, but I'm sure one of this nurses may know the technique he uses.

Best trick for pain is a heating pad in your neck. I wrap my neck w heating pad and I sleep almost all night.

I know a pain level of 10 sounds pretty high, but it really can get that bad if you are late on your pain meds. I have suffered a mimicked liver failure, and that hurt so bad I couldn't breathe, but this is a close second. I'm on my 21st day, and there's still pain in my throat and ears, but I can live with it.
