I grew up "in the country" too where we went out to play in the morning and mother never worried about us. Funny how we always made it home in time to eat even though none of us had watches. Cloudy days were a little tough though because you couldn't always tell exactly where the sun was so we usually lost a little good play time in the woods getting home a bit early so we wouldn't miss supper. There was a tidewater river next to the woods and people used to set traps along the bank so we had to watch out for those. There were also snapping turtles along the river which were worth a few dollars if you caught one. There were plenty of good springs in the woods so we never went thirsty. There was also a dirt road from a farm on top of the hill down through the field about a half mile long where snow melt ran down the wheel tracks in the gravel. That water tasted pretty good too after it's long journey through the gravel. Ticks were unheard of back then but we had seen pictures of them in books.

My little brother had Tinker Toys. I would make contraptions, attach string on them, climb a tree and tie them up where my brother couldn't reach.

Poor Robby  seeing his Tinker Toys hanging by strings where he knew he couldn't get them.

Excited Me  and until Mom would come home.
Once she got home the story would change to :umno: I didn't do it.

Mom:

And then Me again :( when I got grounded.

How 'bout that for a big sister? That's a game that was only played once.

Yo Colin, a garden sprayer and a little gasoline and you're in business. Your mom will never know. ;)

You guys got to play with toys growing up??? You were so spoiled!! :D

I don't remember being restricted on toys much, but TV was a big treat in our house. We got an hour a day, and 99% of the time that was to watch whatever Dad was watching. (except for Sat. when we could watch cartoons all morning)

I think jrjo makes an excellent point...there are many different ways to pass your values onto your kids and the important thing is they learn them, not necessarily the method.
