Hello! My father has been diagnosed with Transverse myilitis and I would like to know more about this disease and his prognosis. He was in a lot of pain, had headaches and had problems with urination. Thank you

Hello! You haven’t specified which part of the spine has been inflamed, so I will tell you about the disease in general. It is a neurological disorder in which an inflammation occurs across both sides of one level, or segment, of the spinal cord. which part of the spinal cord is infected determines which parts of the body are affected. It seems that your fathers symptoms haven’t progressed, which is good. However, such mild symptoms can rapidly progress to more severe symptoms like paralysis or loss of bowel control although urinary retention is one of the severe symptoms. The problem is that there isn’t a cure for this disorder. Doctors may prescribe corticosteroids to decrease inflammation but the recovery is usually spontaneous and starts two to ten weeks after initial symptoms and may last for 2 years. If it doesn’t happen within this time, then it is highly unlikely that something will change at all.
