First I can tell you are very committed to making gains.  That is great.  It sounds like you overworked your levator scapulae that supports your shoulder and connects to your neck.  You should seek Physical Therapy and rest.  When you overwork and increase your workouts more than 5 -10% per week you can exceed the muscles you are working and force the levator scapulae to pick up that extra load that the muscles can not handle, especially overhead.  Remember when you get back to being pain free the work is only beginning.  Strengthen the small back muscles and do modest workouts as to not re injure yourself.

Rub Capsaicin on the sore muscle but be careful it's chile and will burn a bit but works. I was prescribed Meloxicam (an aniti-inflammatory NSAID) and Metaxalone (muscle relaxant). So far it's been working. I went to a regular doctor. May need to take x-rays as well. Good luck.

I, TOO, live in pain. I use several coping methods. Unlike Pres. Clinton, no one else can "feel" your pain. ;-) Different people have different pain for different reasons at different times AND it's always changing.  ERGO, THERE IS NO PANACEA (CURE ALL). You must take charge of your life, your health, and your needs (e.g. pain relief). Prepare yourself accordingly. Seek support (group or individual). Expect depression and frustration. IT SHALL COME TO PASS! RDC

I had the same exact problem. The only thing that will work is anti inflammatory pills. Just go to your family doctor and tell him/her about you problem and they should be giving the these meds. They work wonders!

But now I'm very hesitant to work out my back as I'm almost certain it was due to my back workouts. Although I really need to workout my back urgently because my chest muscle are getting quite strong and my back is not which is not good.

Hope this helps!

Hi, all.  First, at least I don't fill so bad knowing everybody else has the same pull.  I use to be a body builder so I have a large knowledge of human anatomy and health.  So I have been out of it for over ten years, put on a lot of weight.  Recently lost 40lbs and through multiple attachment muscles of the right shoulder blade.  Here is what is happening.  You have muscles from the: spine, neck, rhomboids, delts, and elongator muscles all attaching to the shuolder blade.  And when you use the shoulder blad it is a tug of war.  You can do your exercises and what ever it is that pulled it but the strongest muscles wins.  The strongest muscle will pull the shoulder blade to it the most.  When this happens it can pull multiple or a single competing muscle.  With me it was about eight.

First thing, LET IT REST.  Second is I recommend tiger balm as it has a analgesic property.  As a previous author put, very strong anti inflammatories work.  Next google picture search shoulder muscles and find the ones hurt.  If the muscles is swollen and pulled in to a lump heat it up.  If it is elongated like a cable then ice it up.  If elongated don't stretch it, but if it is balled up stretch it.  Stretching does two things.  First it elongates that muscle allowing the other injured one to rest.  Second it releases the acid that causes the swelling so the anti inflammatories can work better.  I hate to recommend this, but your doctor is your best friend.  Ask for a very strong anti inflammatory, a muscle relaxer to take at night, and a pain killer for when you can no longer move it.

Hope this all helps

I suggest you should not go back to any gym until you have fully recovered from the pain..If someone as given you a massage that is not properly qualified then they could actually be making it alot worse. You should try some Ibruprofen or some Naproxen tablets from your doctor as Naproxen is very good ( better than Ibruprofen ) I had a very bad shoulder and it traveled all down the side of my back and i am now taking Naproxen and believe me it as helped alot.

Hi, I'm a 14 year old, 5' 8", 128lb wrestler in high school. I'm one of only 4 girl wrestlers. About 8 weeks ago I was wrestling one of the guys at practice and went to throw him back down, when it felt like a muscle inbetween my sholderblades (and a little bit further down), but closer to the right side, tore and tightened up. I thought it was nothing so I tried it again and the pain was worse. Acouple days later I was lifting weights and went to do powercleans when I got the pain again way worse, making me drop the bar back on the rack. I went in and had our doc/trainer look at it, she said I strained the muscle. Its been feeling better but acouple days ago we were doing drills wherre we carried our partner down the mat. My back made a weird noise and hurt again the worst of all. I REALLY want to have my full strength potential back, so if you hear anything pleaseee email me. ANYBODY for that matter.

I am 28 years old and in really decent physical shape. One morning I woke up and could not move my neck or left arm. I had horrible pains under my shoulder blades for weeks. Even after PT and a MRi they still couldn't tell me anything. After almost a year it seemed that I was getting back to normal. I could lift and move with caution. At work one day I took the ice machine door to the top of the shoulder. My symptoms have started all over again. The muscles around will swell and bring disabling pain with it. I just had my 2nd MRI and awaiting results. The best thing I have found to allievate pain is to apply pressure directly to that muscle.

My husband has had the very same symptoms for almost 7 months. He's been to a chiropractor, a neurosurgeon, a regular MD, had weeks and weeks of physical therapy only to be told this morning by an orthopedic surgeon that he had pulled a muscle away from the scapula and surgery was the only option to repair it. My husband had 2 MRI's and an x-ray to try to figure out the problem and all the while has been in excruciating pain. Even pain pills didn't help but maybe an hour. Anyone else experiencing this exact type of pain, especially at the back of the shoulder, under the armpit and half way down the arm, get to a doctor soon because all this other stuff probably isn't going to help, I'm sorry to say.

Hi, i had this problem a few years ago. I pulled my shoulder blade working out also! I could barely move because spasms were so bad! When i went to the Dr., they gave me hydrocodone and naproxen. Inflammatory is what makes it hurt, and inflammatory meds and ice pack is what helps to get it down. I know its hard not using the muscle, but just refrain from it as much as possible. I don't take pain meds, so i took Aleve for mine. Aleve has Naproxen in it and is great to help with Inflammatory also (for those that can't go to Dr)!! And only massage it after the inflammation goes down! It could just aggrivate it more, when it's already inflammed!!! Hope it helps!!

I have done this multiple times to my back.

I believe it is a muscle cramp usually deep under the sholder blade. when it firt starts, i have my wife get an Ice cube and rub the area around the sholder blade till the ice cube melts. Some times the sholder blade cramp causes the muscle that goes from the neck to the sholder to tighten up and become very sore.

I use a strap, that i put under my feet when i'm standing and over the muscle running from my neck to my sholder and hold both ends with my hands and pust up with my feet toput pressure on, and loosten the neck muscles. Either one of these muscles can cause the other to act up. Heat is something that causes my muscles to cramp up more, so I try to refrain, unless it's been several days, and is getting better. If your problem is a cramp, Powdered magnisium in a little water helps. But it taste bad. It can also cause a loose stool for some people.
