If you don't play any sports I doubt it would be a strained muscle or anything, but that is what it sounds like, and if it is the only thing that will heal it is not using. If you have bad posture trying to some exercises for scoliosis, your bad posture might just be putting your muscle in an awkward position.

I used to have this same painful problem and it would leave me near paralyzed. I looked up many remedies, and to this day, I can only remeber that Cod Liver Oil helped to heal this injury or pulled muscle. I kept taking cod liver oil until the pain went away.

My advice. Do not do the same exercises that cased the injury. Then go on the net and figure what the muscle groups are that you need to strengthen. Start doing the weights that are advised for these muscles, and do not do anything to start over an easy poundage . Leave your ego at the door. Slowly at least 3 days a week , M-W-F or T-Th-S, lift for a couple weeks then incorporate general low weight exercises 6 to 9 different exercises 3 days a week that will work most of the major muscle groups, and core. It takes 3 to 5 years to put on 30% muscles. No drugs. Think about protein supplement to build and repair the muscles.

What is a rhomboid strain or spasm?
The rhomboid muscles in your upper back connect the inner edges of your shoulder blades to your spine. A rhomboid strain is a stretch or tear of these muscles. A rhomboid spasm is a sudden tightening of the muscle that you cannot control.
What is the cause?
A rhomboid muscle strain or spasm is usually caused by overuse of your shoulder and arm. This can happen from:
Overhead activities, like serving a tennis ball or reaching to put objects on a high shelfRowingCarrying a heavy backpack, especially if you carry it over just one shoulderPoor posture, especially while you are using a computer for a long timeWhat are the symptoms?
A strain causes pain in the upper back between your shoulder blade and your spine. A spasm feels like a knot or tightness in the muscle. You may have pain when you move your shoulders or when you breathe.
How is it diagnosed?
Your healthcare provider will ask about your symptoms, activities, and medical history and examine you.
How is it treated?
You will need to change or stop doing the activities that cause pain until your muscles have healed. For example, you may need to run or ride a bicycle instead of playing tennis or rowing.
Your healthcare provider may recommend stretching and strengthening exercises and other types of physical therapy to help you heal.
A mild rhomboid strain may heal within a few weeks, but a severe injury may take 6 weeks or longer.
How can I help take care of myself?
To help relieve swelling and pain:
Put an ice pack, gel pack, or package of frozen vegetables wrapped in a cloth on the injured area every 3 to 4 hours for up to 20 minutes at a time. You can lie down with your upper back against the ice.Take pain medicine, such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or other medicine as directed by your provider. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, may cause stomach bleeding and other problems. These risks increase with age. Read the label and take as directed. Unless recommended by your healthcare provider, do not take for more than 10 days.
Put moist heat on your back for up to 20 minutes at a time to help relax tight muscles or muscle spasms. Moist heat includes heat patches or moist heating pads that you can purchase at most drugstores, a wet washcloth or towel that has been heated in the dryer, or a hot shower. Don’t use heat if you have swelling.
Do the exercises recommended by your healthcare provider. Massage is also very helpful. Here’s a way to do a form of self-massage:
Put a tennis ball on the floor and lie down with your upper back against the ball.Shift your position to gently roll the ball against your muscles.
You can also buy a foam roller or a self-massage tool.

You PR only irritated the rotator cuff and scalene muscle and scapula to treat this condition you need someone unlock the armpit inside and work on the pecks muscle. And neck. This is a common injury if your body when is not align correctly. dips and push up is hard on your shoulders. There is a muscle and tendons around your rotator. I have had this type of pain. It feels like a muscle under my shoulder blade is pulled. The kind that takes your breath away. It kept reoccurring so I went to my regular Doctor. She prescribed a steroid pak. It took the pain away and it did not occur again for a very long time. My mother used to go to a chiropractor for her knees. She was in so much pain after they manipulated her knee every time. Finally she quit going. Whatever the chiropractor was doing , it was not helping, and in fact it was worstening the problem.

Family doctors should be able to request physio appointments with the hospital should you not have coverage free of charge. This helped me where my plan does not include chiropractor or therapist treatments.
