Hi, I'm new here & I had food stuck in my throat many times but it's getting more serious. I swallowed a very chewy minced beef from a meat pie I had about 3 months ago & it's still sticking deep in my throat! I tried drinking a lot of boiled water & some hot tea. I went for a barium swallow X-Ray scan but they said the object was as small as a bolus or pill so they don't think there's anything serious with my throat & the GP agreed, he thinks it should slide down after a while. The problem is it's still in my throat & it's getting too long! I never had anything in my throat for that long before, I experienced a small fish bone in my throat before but even that went down in just a few weeks. It puts me off eating fish & now I think I don't want a meat pie anymore, especially beef lol! The longer the piece of mince stays, the more I panic. I really need help, I should celebrate if my throat ever clears up again & be extra careful when eating.

I have had the problem of food getting stuck for many years now and not had it checked out by a doctor but as others have said chewing well and eating slow helps a lot, along with drinking often while eating to ensure food isn't stuck and getting backed up making it even harder to swallow or throw up.
The person that mentioned allergies may be on to something though because I know I have many environmental allergies but don't take anything for them. I doubt everyone here has the same issue though as acid reflux has only been a problem for me recently. Ironically the image verification word to post my reply is allergy!

The first time I had food get stuck in my throat was about 3 years ago. I was eating a tuna sandwich & I washed a bite down with some soda and it got stuck, I was in a hurry. Since then the problem has gotten a lot worse the last year. Now I have to eat a lot slower. I have to chew my food extremely well in order to get it to go down. I usually take a sip of water after each bite. I've noticed it helps if I drink a glass of water before I start eating my meal. It also helps if I eat in a non stressful environment. If I'm stressed or in a hurry it will most likely get stuck. I went to the doctor awhile back and he said that acid had left a ring around my esophagus and that had narrowed the opening. There is a procedure where they can go down and get rid of it.

I've searched many times for others with my same issue; this is the first time I've come across your posts but I have these same isues.  The pain while swallowing food is intense at times.  Ironically, I've been keeping a food journal for the past 2 weeks and haven't had an incident. . . which leads me to believe just being more aware and possibly eating better/slower is helping.  A friend just mentioned Eosinophilic Esophagitis to me the other day.  We'll see what my Dr has to say tomorrow. I've never had an endoscopy but I'm thinking he'll recommend it.

I ended up having an endoscopy done. I was nervous at first but decided to go through with it. My throat had closed up at the bottom of my esophogus. The doctor was amazed that I was even getting food down. It was the size of a baby aspirin. The doc went in and dialated my throat. It is now the size of my finger. Acid from my stomach caused a calous on the bottom of my esophogus. If it continues to bother me I can go back in for an operation and have it removed. For now food is going down fine. If you are having problems with your throat I'd recommend going in for an endoscopy. I wish I would have done that in the beginning. I decided to have an ultrasound, barium swallow first. Neither of those could tell me what was wrong.

Guys please go see a doctor.  My 16 year old son had been having the same problem for about 3 or 4 years.  It was only occasionally (once every 3 or 4 months) and mostly when eating steak or chicken like others have said.  I thought maybe he just wasn't chewing his food well enough.  But last month while he was away visiting his dad, a piece of chicken was lodged in his throat for nearly 24 hours.  He visited the ER, and they did a Barium Swallow and said everything looked normal.  When he returned home, I took him to see a gastroenterologist.  The doctor did an endoscopy and biopsy and found out he has Eosinophilic Esophagtis.  It is basically an auto immune reaction to food.  He is having an allergy test on Monday to determine what kind of food he may be allergic to.  My son had no other symptoms besides food getting stuck in his throat occasionally.  It turns out that this disease is becoming more and more prevalent, and some doctors believe it has something to do with food additives or processing.  Anyway, research is still being done, but I encourage each one of you with these symptoms to please see a doctor.  If more people are diagnosed, then they will possibly work harder for a cure.  Many children with this can't eat any kind of food and their symptoms are WAY worse than just the food getting stuck.  As of right now about 1 in 2000 people have it that they know of.  At least those were the statistics I read, but I would bet there are many other people who have it and don't even know it.  Each of you guys could possibly be one of them.

Hi, I had to have an Endoscopy 5 years ago for the same reason, food was just sitting in my throat
Dr. told me it happens to a lot of people. I forget what it's called, But He stretched the opening to my throat for the food to pass thru SO AS NOT to have this feeling. I have to have it done again. My Mother has had it done 2x's as well. My Aunt 4 x's.
Sounds like it 's a natural and pretty commen thing to be stretched. So go see a gastroentologist to have it done.
It fixes my problem.

My 10 yr old daughter just started having this same problem. She has lost over 10 lbs and I can't get her to eat ANYTHING! She says everything feels like its stuck in her throat then spits it out and makes a gagging sound because she still feels it. We went to an ENT who did a scope and found nothing. We are going to a gastro next and also have an apt for a psycologist. I don't know what to do. Let me know what you do!

I use to get food stuck in my throat all the time. Drinking water didnt help, someone told me that taking a cap full of cider vinegar will help the food go down. I never did try it, I usually waited til it passed.  I finally went into get my throat stretched after a year of dealing with it. The doctor was amazed I was even getting any food down, he said my throat had closed shut. He stretched it to about .08 millimeter wide. I went in a few months later and got it stretched again. Its now .12 or .13 meters wide. Food goes down a little better now, I still have to chew my food well before swallowing. I'll prob get it stretched again in a few months.

I went to mayo and they said theyve been studying the condition for the last 10 years. They have seen more and more young people suffer from closed esophagus. They think it is due to food additives they are putting in the food, and allergies. They use to see it more in older adults. They gave me a steroid gel to swallow. That got rid of to many white blood cells I had in my throat. It helped for awhile but now the blood cells have come back. Im going in to have a food allergy test done. I'm pretty sure it is something that I have been eating that has been irritating my esophagus.

Try the wholistic approach. I too have this problem. I also have the constant feeling that my stomach is empty even after i eat. There is an oil called DigestZen. It is a little expensive or atleast to me (like $40). The oil actually lasts along time. The oil is a combination of antural herbs designed to help with the digestion of food. I did research about it and everyone says it worked phenominal. Your body can develope a tolerance to meds, where the meds no longer work for you. Try this.
