Pizza boy have you ever figured this out, this is exactly what I have started experiencing about a year ago. Same things, food stuck but breathing not a problem. Common with the exact same foods you mention.

you may need to get your throat stretched. If you cant get the food to go down you will have to goto the er, then theres a chance of them tearing your throat when they take the food out. Its best to get it stretched before this happens. Ive had mine stretched twice, it made a huge improvement. I dont get food stuck in my throat anymore.

I have had the same problem for 10 years. A long time ago when I had insurance my Doctor prescribed 800 mg Tagamet. It worked like a charm.Every once and a while it didnt help but most of the time it does. After my prescription ran out I bought over the counter tagamet and now i use the generic. Just take 4 to make 800 mg. I hope it helps you too.

Hi, I have that happen on and off since I was about ten I'm 19 now. I went to the gastroenterologist and discovered that I have eosinophilic esophagitis. This is swelling in the esophagus due to allergies. I take acid reflux meds, allergy meds as well as Flovent to relive stress in my chest (I swallow instead of inhale), I also follow a soy free diet (a food I'm allergic too) hope this helps

Maybe try softer food for awhile? Whenever that happens to me I eat soups and easy to eat foods for a bit to give my throat muscles time to relax.

For the past three weeks, I have been having a sensation after I eat that the food is stuck in my throat. It is very uncomfortable - worse after a large meal. Drinking water doesn't seem to help... sometimes makes it worse. Any ideas?

It seems like you have the same thing I had two years ago. After I ate I would get this uncomfortable feeling around my upper abdomen (lower esophagus? stomach?). It was kind of like the feeling you get when you swallow a pill without water and it seems to get stuck on its way down, only this feeling was a little more intense. It would last anywhere between half and hour and in extreme cases, up to eight hours. I had multiple tests done by my GI doctor (barium swallow - upper and lower, endoscopy, colonoscopy, countless blood tests) and everything came back normal. After lots of internet research I tried cutting gluten out of my diet and within days I felt better. After a couple months eating gluten free I also decided to cut dairy out of my diet because I found I had developed an intolerance. I now feel 100% back to normal. I don't know if I am for sure gluten sensitive or celiac, but I do know that I feel great when I am on a gluten free diet, dairy free diet and I never want to be back where I was two years ago!
P.S. I am 20 years old (18 when I started experiencing symptoms), female, and very active

glad you are feeling better and glad you figuredout what was wrong. Nothing is worse than feeling sick. I also cut out dairy and it has made me feel a lot better. I try to avoid sweets and get plenty of fruit in my diet. That seems to help.

I wanted to post my problem here as well. It seems that a few symptoms may be related, but the full clarity of my problem doesn't seem to be mentioned here.
Although a hernia would explain some of the symptoms, I do not have a "lasting" feeling of stuck food. What my problem seems to be is more of a feeling as if the top of my esophagus is forcing food downward, but the bottom half is straining hard to force it back upward. This creates a VERY PAINFUL spot in the middle between them that can even take my breath away. It doesn't give me a choking sensation, and it doesn't happen all the time.
I believe my symptoms may be more mental, or a problem with my brain not instructing my esophagus to properly work. I notice if I have remaining food or liquid in my mouth, it is usually "stronger" effect, than if I swallowed everything in my mouth. Even after I successfully get the food down, there is this sensation that if I were to attempt to swallow again, it would be very bad. So I simply wait 1 to 3 minutes, and it passes, and I can then go back to eating normally.
I've also noticed that if I am eating really spicy foods(hot wings) it can either bring on the symptom or make the symptom stronger than if it is not spicy foods. I do suffer from Celiac Sprue, and I try very hard to watch the gluten in my diet. I also suffer from heartburn, but have been very careful about following some simple guidelines. Like never eating within 3 hours of bedtime. Also making sure that I avoid those combination foods they talk about, etc.
But my stress level is probably 3 times higher than it should be, and I weigh 197lbs which is about 25 pounds more than my body mass indicator says I should weigh. I'm 47 years old and being healthy is something my family would tell you I need to improve on. I don't smoke or drink, but I also don't always eat as healthy as I should.
Also, for those comparing their symptoms, I find that mine have never happened during the morning hours.. I noticed that all the events I've had with this problem have occurred between 11:Am and 9PM. That may just be coincidental but I thought I would mention that to see if anyone else has noticed that their problem does not happen during morning hours.
Anyway, it is VERY frustrating! And embarrassing when it happens and others are present. Most can see it on your face, because you can't hide it, its extremely painful. You can't talk or breathe, and some think you are choking. I've been at dinners and banquets before when it came on strong and its definitely not social topic you want popping up.. :)

My symptoms and solutions are almost exactly like yours. It has been going on for several years occurring several times a month, though I do not think that it is food not chewed enough. I had an endoscopy done yesterday and I had a lot of inflammation in my esophagus. They took a biopsy. I do not believe that acid reflux is the cause of the inflammation. I don't really have any of the reflux symptoms.
I am hoping they will be able to find a cause of the inflammation. The food getting stuck is just a symptom, which is not the size of the food, but caused by the inflammation. It may be an auto-immune response since I do have an auto-immune disease. We will see.

I'd like to know what those results are when you get them. I'm much the same way. I don't have a lot of allergies or anything other than Celiac Sprue, but I am very good at avoiding things that can cause reflux. So I am assuming mine may be from something else.. :) So I look forward to hearing what they say yours is.
