I had TVT sling surgery 2 weeks ago. I have been experiencing heavy bleeding which I thought was my period but now I am starting to wonder. I also had a stitch fall out - is this normal. I called the on-call doctor and she said the stitches could have busted and either go to the ER or wait until normal business hours. Has anyone else had stitches fall out from this surgery?

i am due to have this surgery on wednseday together with vaginal repair. i was told that they use dissolvable stiches only and what tends to fall out at the two week period are the knots as the rest of the sutures dissolve. i am having it all done just as my period ends so i know any bleeding wont be from that. good luck. i would say dont panic- bits of stich can come away as the rest dissloves up to a 90 day period. hope this helps!

I live in Montreal, Canada, and had the sling surgery for prolapsed bladder 10 days ago. I had every confidence in my Dr. who is respected in his specialty. The Dr. said there were no complications. Procedure done vaginally with spinal as anesthetic.
However:
I was in the hospital for 2 1/2 days following the day of the surgery. The
cavity had been packed with gauze during the surgery to control
bleeding.
I had a catheter for 2 days. It was removed, and had to be reinserted
because I could not empty my bladder fully even though I could pee
normally - just not enough.
I came home with the catheter, and had it removed only 4 days later
with success. (Barbaric in my opinion!)
I have been bleeding all the while and still am. In fact, the bleeding
seems to be getting heavier. Discussed this with my Dr., who said I
could continue bleeding for up to 5 weeks.
From the beginning, I have been unable to sit properly. The left side was
comfortable but the right side was unbearable to sit on. Felt like
something foreign was burning and pushing up my insides when I tried
to sit straight. While not as painful now, I still feel like something
burning, or trying to tear, on the right side when I sit or stand.
I was given antibiotics twice; once intravenously in hospital, and a
second dose of three days at home.
After 10 days, I do not feel up to going outside for any length of time. I am still uncomfortable to sit and fear the bleeding might worsen. So, all this considered, I do not feel this is a "Day surgery" nor to be taken lightly. I can't help feeling that something is wrong even though I was reassured by my Dr., that my experience is normal. I will not have a checkup by him until six weeks after my initial surgery.
It remains to be seen if I would do this over again......I'll give it two months then decide. Hope this helps someone who is contemplating this surgery. Does anyone have similar experience who can tell me what to expect down the road.

i live in essex, england.
I had a tvt, bladder repair, and large cystocele removed.
I was gone from 4.30 pm- 7 pm , when it should have taken less that 1 hour. i reacted badly to the anaesthetic.
when i came round it felt as if i had been stood on by an elephant.
I could barely walk, stand or sit for a week.
Stuffed me full of dressings, that i asked not to have, as i have previously had T.S.S. The trainee nurse tried to pull the dressing out whilst the catheter was still in situ, which was excrutiating.
Where the slings stitches poked through, was agony. This was nearly 7 months ago.
2 courses of anti biotics in first 2 weeks.
almost constant Ache in groin.
It took 2 months to be able to walk, stand, sit, and be almost back human.
The pain is still around. Sharp stabbing pains, something pulling too tight.
will not allow hubbie near me, as sex is too painful.
leaking is worse than it ever was!
Before op, only when coughed or sneezed or exercised. So i did not always wear a pad.
Now, it takes me half an hour to go to the toilet, as after i have been for a wee, i can still feel that i need to wee more, and i have to sit and rock back and forth, or stand up / down, or just wait until the next bit is ready to flow; - sometimes a dribble, sometimes nearly as much again. almost as if there is a " kink" in the uretha.
and i have to wear a pad every day. i leak especially when bending over.
Yet having another urodynamic test, i stood over the sheet, and coughed without losing a drop !!
i am sure my surgeon thought i was just making it all up !!
They have now put me on little blue tablets for over sensitive bladders ! which i don`t have, as i can actually hold a full bladder for ages, all day if necessary, but when i go, it doen`t all come out.
If i had the choice again i would not have the TVT.
:-(

Well, to the person in Essex, I did not have the amount of trouble you are having. So sorry for you.
After the initial 2 months it took me to recover completely, I had no problems whatsoever. Now, 5 months later, I am like new. Don't even pee when I sneeze, force, etc. Don't go to the bathroom nearly as often as I did before and would feel quite confident playing tennis or other strenuous sport.
The only slight problem I have is that the urge to pee comes on quite suddenly, but enough time to make it to the toilet. One other thing, on my post op visit, it was found that I have scar tissue which might make sexual intercourse painful and perhaps dilation will be needed. Remains to be seen.
I wish you all the best of luck.

I had my TVT back in Aug 2006 just after it came out of experimental research. I like the first responder had some heavy bleeding just after the surgery, I did end up getting checked. The doctor said that a stitch did fall out and to just to take it easy. I found out later that I tore more. Matter of fact, all the way back to my pelvic bone. I started having a lot of pain especially during intercourse when I was in certain positions. I had to see a different Uro/Gyno because of my insurance who told me that the pain I continued to have was not normal and maybe some physical therapy is what I needed. So, no matter how embarrassed I was I had the physical therapy. It did help a bit, but I knew that I would spend the rest of my life with this pain. Back in Feb of 09 I found out I was pregnant with my 3rd baby. I started having a lot of pain not thinking it had anything to do with my sling, but now the burning near my urethra is unbearable. I have been told there is no difference between deliveries, but am concerned about either. My question is has anyone been pregnant after having a TVT? put in message line after TVT surgery Thanks

I had a tvt op 10 days ago and wonder if those people who had the op a while ago have noticed improvement?
At the moment I have terrible urge incontinence - when I need to go I need to go and if I don't get there I leak which is way worse than before the op. Plus I'm going much more frequently.
Is this going to improve or has the op failed????

I had my TVT Sling on Friday (3 days ago). Immediately I have noticed a difference, it takes me longer to go to the bathroom, but onlybecause my entire baldder it emptying each time I go. I'm able to sleep through the night and I can feel the difference that everything is out of my bladder when I get up to leave the bathroom - I haven't felt like this since before I had 2 kids! Yay, it worked!!! thanks Dr.A

I read each of your posts moments ago having only stumbled upon this page after having Googled "TVT Too Tight".
I am concerned that my TVT may very well be too tight.
I had a Total Hysterectomy and TVT performed Oct 28th and while I am healing nicely,... I am fearful that the TVT is not correct.
I am up through the night a minimum of two times to void. Perhaps I am not emptying my bladder fully with each void, I am not sure. The only thing I know for sure is I feel a bit of relief at the time.
My major concern is not the voiding,... it is the pain in my groin when legs are outstretched for any length of time.
If I am standing and cough, I get sharp stabbing pain on both sides.
Of course it has only been 2 1/2 weeks since my Taping,.... so I am confused as to whether or not it is just a part of the healing process.
I almost shake at the thought,... but can a TVT be reversed? I am told the sling is a rough mesh-like material,... can this be removed fairly easily or not at all?
I am having no difficulty with the hysterectomy or the hormones that I must take since. I do have a bit of dry skin, but that is manageable. This PAIN in my groin is frightening.
Has anyone any advisement? I am not scheduled to see my surgeon until Dec 20th.

i've read the posts here, and am sorry to hear of all the problems. i had mine done 5 days ago and just now got my catheter out, go in to dr in a bit to see if it can stay out. crossing my fingers.
for those with all the pain in the groin or around the legs, did your doctor use your own tissue as the sling? they would take a tendon or some tissue close to that area. some of the TVT's are done that way so the body does not reject the sling.
i have minor pain, dont even take pain pills for it. i am just hoping to get rid of the catheter and "learn" how to void my bladder fully! good luck to all

hi just googled " can tvt op be reversed" and got this site as one of few suggested pages and thought i would tell you guys me case also am due to see my consultant in march 2011 and wil be asking this question an will post answer as and when i get it
I had tvt op in oct 2009 and it has caused more problems than it has helped , like so many of your stories i have been suffering from daily leakages for a total of five years following child birth. i went to my gp after 2yrs of suffering in silence and after nearly 1 yr of physio using prob ect they said i had no reaction in a certain muscle, had urodynamic tests- ( which are c**p) and was told surgery could sort leakage when coughing- excercising ect so even though only 29 had surgery and have regreted every day since. After surgery i had to see c.nurse nearly every day for a week had some retention in first scan after cathitar was removed, bleeding for a gd while not sure how long but it did settle down noticed the change in emptying bladder straight away and have been complaing ever since still havent seen consultant only nurse
i dont leak as much when coughing ( before was v.bad) but spray pee- sometimes out of toilet bowl and on to myself , take half an hour to pee and half a roll of toilet roll nearly every time as when i think im finished - stream stops i wipe get hand full of pee and then pee again ( srry to be so crude but its the truth ) :-(, still using pads still feel like stinky cow and now have scar tissue nice and lumpy and still leak during sex.IF I COULD GO BACK WOULD NOT HAVE OP as i think with perserverance could of had more better results from pelvic floor exs as now its worse than befoe due to all these new symptoms

Hi all,
I decided to write this reply after looking for answers on the net as I was really worried, but to be honest it made me even more worried. Reading every ones experiences and how they have dealt with it all just confused me.
I had the TVT procedure on Monday and was told all was well, just had a little belly ache which was ok with a pain killer. The catheter was taken out at 6am and my bladder was monitored every time I used the toilet. At first it looked promising as my bladder seemed to work ok, but after the 3rd attempt I still had 800cc left in my bladder. So I was told they will have to fit a catheter and send me home, but will give me a follow-up appointment to check again and remove the catheter.
I hated the catheter and could not wait to have it out, so on Friday I called my GP and the nurse removed it for me. I felt so happy and just kept monitoring each time I used the toilet. I realised my bladder does not empty fully each time and decided to read about it on the net.
One thing we have to realise, not everyone has been done with the same surgeon and each body reacts differently. The more worried I become, the less the amount became. I could void, not fully, but too often. I even had to change a few times in the day. I even thought about going to the ER, until my brother said he will get a friend who is a doctor to call me.
The doctor told me to try and relax, as not being able to void fully is one of the post op symptoms. He said as long as you can use the toilet it's fine and i don't need to worry about infections or other problems this early on. He also said to drink lots of water and cranberry juice as it helps. He said as it is inflamed and the use of catheter does not help, it is normally difficult to void completely, but will get better after 7th day.
I felt so much better after his call and the next time I used the toilet, I felt it almost empty. So the point of me writing is to let you guys know unless you can not go at all, you have nothing to worry about. Just let your body settle and I am sure you will be fine.
