There is a new procedure for deviated septum in the US. It takes around 30 minutes and you go home afterwards. The ones that were operated on above sound like the old procedure they use to do in the US.

I had a deviated septum reset in 1977- the doctor broke my crooked nose and reset , packed it taped it for a week. I just had nasal polyp removal 3 weeks ago. all done with endoscopic surgery. breathing better than I have in 30 years. nose was not packed. very little bleeding. I recommend.

It sounds like you had the worse experience I have ever heard of. I have had 3 Polyp surgeries....although none of them fun the did become progressively less painful (post op).
First surgery in 1995 and I was packed with the cotton gauze for about a week and looked like Mr. Magoo, pain during the entire week as well as bleeding. Second surgery about 6 years later, packing this time was a short rubber piece that Was to be left in place for 5 days, I actually removed them myself with hemostats, that relieved the pain of the packing. Third surgery was 4 years ago ( this is now 2014) and the ENT din not use any packing. Best one yet with the least amount of post op pain. Nausea for a couple of days and obviously slight facial discoloration light bruising is all. Alas I am once again needing surgery or some kind of supplemental remedy.

I had a submucous resection in the uk 10 years ago, which worked. The surgeon said at that time,
in 10 years you will need to have it done again. That time is now due,but I live in spain and cannot
get a positive response from my GP here.He tells me it is too dangerous an operation for a man
of my age,which is 80.So I have a dilemma.Go private I say,only option.

I live in the UK I get polyps asthma and am allergic to asprin I have had polyps removed 5 times in the last 20 years. Always done under general anasthetic. Never had gauze shoved up my nose. The last 2 times the surgeon has used water soluble anti-biotic foam. this stops the bleeding and helps protects against infection. I have never had severe pain, just a headache. which a couple of paracetomol cured. The consultant recommended time off after the opp to reduce the chances of infection. The last op was 4 years ago . i think I might be due for another soon. I really wouldn't worry about it.

Another consideration if there are no polyps or very small ones is balloon sinuplasty, done in the office under local anesthesia with no downtime.

Had the surgery 5 years ago and worked great. The only negative was the follow up exam which was to clean up some of the clots in my sinus region, very intrusive and I was awake for this procedure. Over all not to bad and well worth the surgery for me.

I have been have a problem with polyps since 2001. Had 2 surgeries 10 months apart. Had since then 2 more surgeries to remove polyps. The third one was almost 5 years after the second surgery. Surgery number 4 was on July 2,2012. The day after my 29th anniversary. When I had my third surgery I had a complication with the anesthesia. Make the mather worse I was scare to death for the next surgery but my new doctor told me I would be fine. I was told polyps are part of triad asthma. I looked it up and the video I found explained it. I had to undergo an aspirin desensitization. Which means they introduce you to aspirin in smaller pieces until you took a full aspirin. My husband told me the surgery was done differently then the first 3 surgeries I had done. I have been put on steroids a few times over the past 14 years but it only helps for a little while since you can't stay on it. Next surgery will be in spring next year. Would have set it up this year but my husband had to have open heart surgery in january

If it was my doctor would have told me it did when I told him I had to postpone my surgery until spring 2016 since my husband had to have open heart surgery in January 2015

I just had my sinus packing removed today. I'm glad I didn't read this before I went in. I'm only responding to let others know that for me the experience of the packing removal what really not that bad at all. So it may be different nowadays. I went in, they sprayed some stuff into my nose to numb it, waited five minutes, pulled the packing that was attached to a string and that was it. It wasn't a great experience, but not too painful... maybe a 3 out of 10. So for people who are worried about this part, maybe it won't be that bad after all :)

I am now horrified lol...I'm 35 weeks pregnant with a bleeding nasty nose polyp and I have to get it removed or it will keep growing...my concern is my baby going to be okay while under all the anesthesia. I'm set for surgery next week and thought I'd look for opinions.
