Interesting thread, but no conclusions. Shame!

I've had this for a couple of years now, and have just lived with it & not worried too much. It seems more frequent in cold weather, and is not connected to actual use of the affected digit, often it happens just with flexing the joints. Over summer I've had no problems, but in the last week I've had 2 episodes with fingers, and more worryingly my first ever experience with the side of my big toe. That'll teach me to get out of bed!

May be time to visit my GP... if I find anything useful, I'll let you know!

Yes , i recenlty had it happen while back in the right hand under the thumb. thought it was a charley horse but a white bump appeared, skin was drawn tight and it pinched, then turned reddish and by morning was black and blue. Did not think much of it as i had carpel tunnel surgery on that hand and assumed it was due to that surgey 3 years ago. Then had it on the left hand last week, index finger and went to the DR. he said Raynauds as well but having the same issue again today. any more insight would be greatly appreciated.

I am only 17 years old and I get the same thing. Yesterday it was the bottom of my foot, a sudden sharp pain that hurt whenever i put pressure on it. I had to sit for several minutes in pain before the swelling went away. Today it was the base of my right ring finger, it started turning red, all of my fingers, then a sharp pain that felt like it was bruised badly. After the pain went away it felt numb and cold, but the redness went away, and slowly the swelling. Now it's only slightly numb... I wish I knew what was wrong. i thought maybe carpal tunnel, because I play piano, draw, write, paint, and cook, but it's not in my joints or wrists... :( This really worries me, and I hope we all find answers soon...

I just got the same thing like 15 min ago. I was terrified. I felt as though there was a sting on my right hand ring finger and when I saw it there was a bulge. The area was all blue. My finger became slightly numb too. Is there any cause for this? how many days does it take to go away?

Hi, I'm a guy in China who just got this black n blue painful swollen end joint on right-hand middle finger last night. No trauma involved apart from, perhaps, carrying shopping bag, not so heavy. Immediate thought - spider! No visible bite, and I've had them before.

Moved apartments once cos I couldn't eliminate a Golden Orb spider which was trying to do me serious damage every single night. Two bites on the back every single night. Big, red, painful, itchy. No explanation. Finally woke up about 3am one morning to see this big black/yellow-striped monstrosity sauntering off across the pillow right before my eyes. Too slow to react. It was back under the bed again, ready for the next night. Left the apartment. Left the bed. Prayed it wasn't in the baggage.

Hope that makes you feel better. Thanks for all your input. Very reassuring. Thought it was aliens.

Hi I had this sharp stabbing pain twice in my fingers of the same hand in the last 6 months. It just turn blue and purple and very painful and swollen for about 10-30 minutes, then subside. I am kind of worry, people say it could be a blood clot or some kind of small haemorrhage.

I too get these burst blood vessels.... and I, too, have low blood pressure! Wierd... could be a connection there!

I can add to this because I've had this pain in the joint thing followed by bruising for years (I photograph it each time it happens in the hope that someday someone will be able to explain it) and my Mum used to get it also, she lived to 82 & died of something else so it hasn't worried me but it's weird!...starts with a dull pain that results in a bruise & sometimes swelling & numbness, mostly in my fingers, sometimes in toes but it has also happened a few times in my tongue and once in my bottom lip when I wasn't eating, I wasn't even talking. I don't think it's got anything to do with rings (I don't wear any) lifting anything(I've had it happen in the middle of the night) and my blood pressure is always normal...I'm 58 but I reckon I've had it 20 years.

Exactly the same has been happening to me. I am in my fifties & am really worried by it. Anyone actually had an answer from a Dr as to what it is?

This has just happened to me too, for the second time.  The first time, I thought I had banged or jammed my finger on something, my nurse friend thought it might be broken or sprained...since it takes forever to get into our GP, I didn't get it checked out, and it disappeared within a few days.  Here it is again, right hand middle finger just like before.  I am going to the walk in clinic tomorrow but am not sure how much help they can be since they are not my "official" dr's office.  The only other ideas I have found online as to the cause are arthritis or carpal tunnel syndrome, and from the symptoms and pictures I think it is definitely neither of those.

Suffered this for the second time in 4 weeks and very painful and scary. Thank you to the person who suggested Auchenbach's syndrome or 'popped vein' as this seems to explain my exact symptoms. If you google it you will see suggestions on how to deal with it. Off to the doctor tomorrow to check it out.

I have had this probem starting in my early 30ties, ring finger feeling like a sting, then slowly swelling right before my eyes and then the purple bruising. I'm now 58 and have been to many doctors, to help, not one has come up with an answer. It is always one of my fingers, but one time and one time only it started at my wrist and went up about 4 inches

turning purple feeling like a b ruise. I smoke and one doctor said quit maybe that will help, bur have n ot as of yet.

I believe this problem is gout.  I'm a  62 year old female, athletic and generally healthy but I do eat a lot of meat and have been drinking more beer than usual.  Gout does run in my family and about two months ago I had my first episode in my big toe on my left foot. It lasted a few days and was gone.  About 4 weeks ago I was sailing with friends and when the boat healed over put my arm out to steady myself.  The middle finger on my left had began to swell about 20 minutes later.  I thought I had broken it or jammed it very badly.  Then a few days ago it dawned on me that it could be gout.  It is extremely swollen, especially the middle knuckle, very painful and was initially bruised around each knuckle.  It's been almost 4 weeks and the pain is not as bad but it is still very swollen and hot.  I am trying a homeopathic remedy "tart cherry" but there has been very little change.  I have no idea at this point how long I can expect this episode to last which is extremely disconcerting.

wow, this seems to be a common problem. I was just out cycling when suddenly I got a sharp paid, redness and swelling in my finger pad. I thought I had been stung or touched something sharp but there was no puncture wound. It looked as if a blood vessel had burst as it became greeny purple. Then about 30 minutes later it has completely gone although it is still a little tender.
