This happened to me today for the first time while holding my cat so we could put some colloidal iodine on her nose wound. we used Frontline a couple weeks ago on her and I wondered if I might have touched the poison somehow. The pain was sudden and sharp and is lingering through the evening. The pain is in several places along my finger and the vein seems darker than the other hand, but not purple the way people with popped vessels are explaining. I am heavy and worried this might be a sign of diabetes if it has nothing to do with the cat poison. Have other people been around pet flea products when experiencing this problem? two weeks seems like it should be safe, but then again that stuff is pretty toxic.

I have been taking 600 mg ibuprofen a lot recently for an injured shoulder. I also use regular strength for frequent sinus headaches. Also have low blood pressure. Was doing dishes when my thumb swelled suddenly and turned purple. Went to ER. They were baffled. Seeing my Dr tomorrow. Seems like it might be Achenbach?

i have also had this for years. It always has a cause.. picking up something heavy or hard edged that impacts the fingers - even holding the roof of the car while getting in or out will do it - a sharp pain followed by a small dark hemotoma under the skin - usually on middle or ring finger. Last night it happended while carrying am amplifier by the handle i knew as soon as it happend what i had done - BUT for the first time in the years of having this happen the finger swelled up - significantly - like a sausage with cinches where the joints are. The swelling is a bit better this morning - but the bottom 2/3 of the finger are defnitley bruised/black&blue. It is uncomfortable but no numbness or lack of sensation. If it's a 'harmless' hemotoma then so be it - but the swelling has me concerned about circulation. will give it till monday and if not - off to promptcare.

A lot of the people above are reporting issues at the base of the finger not under the nailbed.

I have experienced this issue twice.
The first occurrence happened after a small blunt trauma to the hand with a hand tool. After the blunt hit I felt a pop in my hand at the base of my middle finger. Immediately I felt a burning pain that was immediately followed up by swelling. My hand looked slightly spotty and there was mild pain associated with this incident. Unsure what had happened, I iced the area of pain and massaged the finger, concerned that it may be a blood clot. I never lost feeling or sensation in the finger. With-in hours of the accident I experienced significant burning that subsided with 3-4 days. I never sought out any medical treatment because with-in a week the bruising and swelling went away.
When the second incident occurred I grew quit concerned. I had been almost 6 months after the original incident. I was mostly concerned because the second occurrence happened during a period when my hand was at rest. I was simply walking around at work when I began to experience the same symptoms as above. I became gravely concerned and it was at this point I sought out medical attention.
Nothing immediately raised alarm with the physician. He explained that I may have damaged the vessel during the last event, but more than likely I am experiencing, Hematoma. Hematoma is a bruise an area of skin discoloration. A bruise occurs when small blood vessels break and leak their contents into the soft tissue beneath the skin. Sometimes these bruises can last from days to months being the mild to severe and painful.
Hematomas cause irritation and inflammation. Symptoms depend upon their location and whether the size of the hematoma or the associated swelling and inflammation causes structures nearby to be affected. The common symptoms of inflammation include redness, pain, and swelling. In general, superficial hematomas of skin, soft tissue, and muscle tend to resolve over time. Most hematomas have little consequence. They are due to minor trauma where the patient was aware of the injury, knows what part of the body was injured, and can expect to recover with few problems. Bumps and bruises are part of every child's growth.
Some hematomas may be more important because of their location and it is usually the nearby affected structures that cause symptoms. For example, medical care would be sought for a head injury victim for significant headache, vomiting , or difficulty being aroused. Intracranial (intra= within + cranium=skull) hematomas need to cause pressure on the brain before symptoms manifest themselves, thus any significant head injury should be evaluated by a health care practitioner.
What causes it?
Trauma is the most common cause of a hematoma. When people think of trauma, they generally think of car accidents, falls, head injuries, broken bones, and gunshot wounds. Trauma to tissue may also be caused by an aggressive sneeze or an unexpected twist of a limb. When a blood vessel is damaged blood leaks into the surrounding tissue; this blood tends to coagulate or clot. The greater the amount of bleeding that occurs, the larger the amount of clot formation.
Blood vessels that are fragile may contribute to hematoma formation. For example, an aneurysm or weakening in a blood vessel wall may spontaneously leak.
There are many people who take blood thinners (anticoagulation) medications. Examples include warfarin (Coumadin), aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), prasugrel (Effient), rivaroxaban (Xarelto), and apixaban (Eliquis). These medications increase the potential for spontaneous bleeding and for hematomas to expand because the body cannot efficiently repair blood vessels and this allows blood to continually leak through the damaged areas.
Occasionally, diseases may occur that decrease the number of platelets in the bloodstream (thrombocytopenia) or their ability to function. The platelets are the cells in the bloodstream that help initiate blood clot and fibrin formation.
All of the above situations may exist independently to cause a hematoma or they may occur together.

I've been experiencing the same things this week -found this answer:
Dr. Mark A. Moran answered:A cold certain spot where my vein is on top of my hand where my index finger is and also with alittle sharp pain what could be causing that feeling? Many options This could be many things. Arthritis, carpal tunnel, nerve pinching, vascular problem, insect bite, skin problem to name a few. I would monitor for progressing symptoms such as increasing numbness and pain , try OTC meds such as Advil, and see what happens. If no better or getting worse, see your doctor

I am 39 black (f) was washing dishes and all of the sudden a sharp pain hit my middle finger, mid joint like a sting and shot up my arm. I looked and noticed my vein was purple, swollen and throbbing. I ran up to show my husband because he is in the medical profession and he saw it and thought I was bit by a spider but I knew I wasn't. This truly scared me, I thought it was a clot traveling to take me out but it is so refreshing to see others have experienced this, now I dont think I am crazy. Thanks for posting everyone.
