Wow this just happened to my daughter a few hours ago. I had jsut given her a bath and her thumb was perfectly normal no redness swelling or anything. got her dressed and gave her lunch at the table. I ran to the bathroom and she yells to me mommy um my finger is purple. i came out looke at her finger and it just looked like from my view purple marker on her finger so i was going to wipe it with a wipe and it started swelling and these tiny purple bumps started appearing one after another down her thum and all around her thumb and nail started to swell more. I freaked out because it was totally normal just min before and she didnt have anything near her to pinch it on and she said she didnt hit or hurt it. so my first thought was that some poisonus spider had bit her and it was now spreading through her blood stream. so i picked her up and drove her to her pediatrician since she is 2 min from my house to see if she had seen this before. She told me that it looks like she shut it in a door or pinched it in a toy maybe. I told her I dont think thats the case shes kind of an overly dramatic child if she had hurt herself she would have cried or told me she had shut it in something, plus there was really nothing for her to have done something like that on. but she insisted that it must be that and that sometimes children will pinch it in a toy and not even know it. But she did note that it wasnt tender to the touch...she let her hold it push on it and didnt even flinch or say ow. again i think if she had pinched it it would definitley be tender. I havent been able to really find anyhting that looks or sounds exactly like it. its so strange esp. the tiny purple bumps that were spreading down her thumb. I found some info on purpula which sounded like it but when i saw pics its definitely not her thumb is swolllen like a blister but no pus and has these strange purple bumps in a cluster that were spreading down the thumb inside the blister!!! Well at least after finding this site I feel less crazy that others had had something similar happen. and it appears its not some deadly poison spreading through my baby girl. but im gonna keep a close eye on it and give her the antibiotics her ped. described, because they said it looks infected. but i swear 10 min before they had seen her her thumb was perfectly normal......

I had the same thing happen to me today.
I'm 44 - very fit with no medical history.
I was moving the garden funiture to our sales area - heavy 30kg lifts which I do every day.
Suddenly I thought - damn I've left my wedding ring on ( I usually remove it for work ) - I looked at my finger - no wedding ring - just a swelling and a massive bruise forming.
10 hours later and I've got a purple finger - knuckle to tip.
I also have a pain in my lower spine and vision distortion in my left eye.
It is my belief that this is a form of abduction identification - the finger is the site of control/sedation.
Have any others suffered memory loss or other strage skin lesions, pain in the lower spine and visual distortions?

This happens to me about once a year.Im minding my own business, and I suddenly feel as though my finger is being pumped up by a sphygnomanometer (blood pressure machine)..I look at my hand and can actually see my finger swelling up as I watch, it then goes black from fingertip to 2nd joint. Clearly its a little burst capiliary, the bleed can't really go anywhere so it settles around the finger causing the bruising.I too have low blood pressure and killer migraines.
Very relieved to discover that I am not dying, at one point I was considering Ebola XD !...However I don't think people in Worthing get ebola. And I know that being an ex nurse I am a total hypochondriac!!
Must dash, have to go google all my other ailments %-)

I thnk we all suffer from the same thing! I am 39 years old and mine started about 5 years ago with a sharp annoying pain in the second joint from the palm of my middle finger in my right hand (also my writng hand). It swelled and then turned purple and bruised. The pain didn't last but a few minutes but it continued to be sore and I could not put any kind of pressure on it like carry heavy items or pull anything heavy. After about a month it completely healed. This year I was vacationing in Puerto Nuevo and was having a cup of coffee on the balcony of our room when suddenly I felt a tightness in the same finger. This time no real sharp pain but it felt like when you tie a string around your finger at the base and continue winding it up until all the blood is pressured at the tip. That's what my entire finger felt like as I watched it swell like a sausage! It was stiff and I couln't bend it and then it began to turn purple and really bruised. This has been the most extreme episode. It's never done that before. Now it is starting to heal and the bruising is slowly fading and it is feeling better. I was hoping someone would have an answer for this, but it seems we are all baffled. I'm going to ask my doctor and do some research. If I find anything out i'll post it. Hope you do the same. ;-)

8 months and 6 doctor's later, I still don't know what's going on with me. In my right pinky, 2nd joint, has been swelled up, bruised and in severe pain. My most recent doctor, after shooting the joint up with Laticane, steroids and antibiotics, declared it a Ligamnet Injury and told me to where a moveable splint for 2 months. Now, not only is my finger still swelled, bruised and in pain, but now my 1st joiny next to my finger nail is swelled up and I have pain through out the entire bone. So as it MIGHT have been a ligament injury, there is something else going on in there too!!...If anyone has any type of answers on what this might be, please let me know. As much as I would love to keep my little finger, I'm 'bout ready to cut the damn thing off to have pain relief!!

I experienced numbness of my middle finger this afternoon and again this evening. I also experienced the appearance of a bruise. I was lucky enough that the tingling sensation only lasted for about an hour. I am 59 years old and was diagnosed with inflamatory arthritis about a year ago. My meds now include Humira and methotrexate which have conquered my pain. I also experienced a bleed in my iris back in April and the opthamologist also thought this experience was related to arthritis. If you have these symptoms, you might want to check with a rheumatologist and see if you might have inflamatory arthritis as was suggested earlier in the conversation.

This is only the second thread that I've ever read on this subject. I have had this for almost 20 yrs. and you are correct ... doctors have no clue.
What I haven't read here ... and perhaps, because you are being caught off guard ..... is that, for me, when the initial stinging pain starts (and it is major!) the central sting zone turns white ...and is surrounded by a deep red inflamed ring. Then the white disappears, then intense itchiness/soreness. Then the mass bruise starts crawling everywhere. So big for such a small spot!! I often find that I have temporary numbness as well. I never get much swelling ..... I find that the bruising creeps parallel to the surface. I have also noticed that the bruising disappears faster than a normal trauma type bruise.
The pain is what is amazing! I am almost inclined to think that it is a spontaneous rupture of a sensory nerve cell with it's associated blood supply.
After some research, I realized that this all started around the time I first took a very strong toxic antibiotic. A Fluoroquinolone Antibiotic.
And has resurfaced after repeated prescriptions.
Have any of you taken an FQ AntiB or a Quinolone AntiB in the past? (for a UTI?)
Please let me know.

Thanks,
Carolyn

Hi again,
I just had a thought! Since I find that they always happen next to a bone ..... perhaps,
it is the spontaneous rupture of the attachment to the bones.
Has anyone who has had this for a long time, developed any form of arthritis in hands? Or knuckle/hand
deformities?

Thanks,
Carolyn

PS: It is hard to imagine that this has been going on for so long and with so many people,
and NO ONE knows what it is!!! Amazing!
My excuse is that I only learned to use a computer in 2008! And that probably goes for many people my age.
And another question is why did I not get this far earlier?

I have the same thing going on but in my foot! I'm a 28 yr old female, pretty healthy. I'm just minding my own business, loading up clothes into the washer, when all the sudden I feel a MAJOR bee sting feeling in the side of my foot near my little toe where it connects to my foot. I rip off my sock to see if there's a spider or something in my sock, but there's nothing. Just a white, pea size circle right where it is stinging. Then it was instant swelling, then turning red. The stinging dies down pretty fast, but then it also starts to feel numb and tingly. The next morning it was just tender like a bruise but it was so dark black and blue creeping all over my foot. Then what do you know...same exact thing about three weeks later just watching tv! Same place too! Why can't the docs figure this out? There's got to be a way to manage it at least! HELP! I'm so glad I found you all on here though so I know I'm not going to die from it....hopefully. ; ) I'm going to keep searching and I'll let you all know if I find anything out.
