I was having some of the odor issues as described above from the copper IUD I had. I had to have mine taken out after two years as my period started to come every few weeks and then last for 17 - 21 days. I thought it was more related to my being 52, but with the heavier bleeding the IUD was causing some anemia as well. After it was removed I noticed immediately I had no more odor issues. Although I liked the IUD, it didn't like me so it had to go.

I have the CURE. My OB told me to Take Empty gel tabs and fill them with boric acid. Insert one in the mornjng and 1 at night for 7 days. The smell will be gone:) IT WORKED! The boric acid destroys only the bad bacteria by bringing the vaginas ph back to normal. When the PH is off bacteria grows...thus the smell. My OB says do this for a day or two anytime you notice an odor not related to sweating:) hope this helps!

I've been having the IUS for over 2 yrs. I've also been having the smell since I got it in and my doc says it is normal. Well I just had a pap done and also tested for STD's and everything came back normal. So then what is THAT SMELL??? After reading all the other posts here I am convinced and no one can tell me otherwise. I'm getting this thing removed ASAP!! I would suggest you all do the same. I will find another contraceptive. Can't live with this smell any longer.

I had the Paraguard (copper) IUD which I had for 8 years before it started causing problems. A year ago I noticed I was getting yeast infections more. I would treat them with over the counter (OTC) meds. After while I started noticing a smell that I have never had and tested positive for BV. At first I heard that you only contract BV when you have multiple sex partners or a new partner, but I've been with the same partner for 12 years. Just recently I heard my IUD could be the source of my problems. After extensive research and a talk with the doc, I had it removed. So far no more issues, no reoccurences and she's (vagina) more sensitive to touch which isn't all bad. The IUD isn't for every one and is the most effective birth control, but if you start having issues you've never had and no other explanation for them it just may be your IUD.

I too have the Mirena and noticed the same issue. It was really bad after having about 1yr. I got the RePresh (found at all drugstores)in the femnine section. Works great. Lasts over 3 days and have not had the smell issue back yet. DO NOT DOUCHE! Do not use summers even wash or wipes or sprays...they are act as irrittants and do not solve the problem, just cover up smell. Use only ivory or dove soaps down there, but not the body wash from ivory or dove. Bar soap. Makes a huge difference. Also eat a lot of natural/organic yogurt or take Probiotic supplements. The healthy bacteria in there helps a lot with keeping the areas PH balance..balanced. Also at least once a week soak in a lukewarm bath with baking soda. Keeps the ph levels balanced :)

I just used my finger nails to grasp the little line that was attached to my mirena & pulled it out. It was simple and virtually pain-free. The fact that a doc would charge 400 to pull it out just shows you what's going on w our health system. I couldn't get rid of the fishy smell for more than a few weeks & I've never had bacterial vaginosis aside from once when I was pregnant. I did have the mirena before with no issues, but this one was just constant yeast infection & BV. By the way, IUDs are linked to breast cancer. The govt wants to control overpopulation by preventing births & killing off moms. I'm over it! I'll take my period and be happy with it I guess. Better to have a period than breast cancer.

I am so glad to learn I am not the only one experiencing this problem. U always thought it could be because I have two small children and I am constantly chasing them around, so I sweat a lot. Well after doing my research I strongly believe it from my mirena iud I had put in 7-8 months ago. Calledy OB office today and left a message for the nurse, she called back and left me a message and said she thought it was a infection. If it's from the iud inverting it out right then and there. I a very clean woman and to have this odor it unacceptable. When my husband wants to get active I scrub myself with feminine wash and he has never said anything about the odor, but it's discussing to me and I ant take it anymore.

I am so glad I have been reading all these posts. I had the copper IUD for 3 years and kept getting BV because of it. I kept telling my doctor and she said that wasn't the reason. After three years I took it out. I couldn't deal with the smell. Also my periods were much heavier after I got it put in. As soon as it was removed no more smell  and no more BV. I have scheduled an appt for the Mirena but after reading this I am not going to get it afterall if I'm going to have the same issue with the odor. Thanks for posting this information since I thought Mirena users didn't have that same issue.

Omg, please help. I am a 25 year old women, got the Mirena when I was 20 and just got a new placed in because it was expired. When I was 20 and I first had it placed, it was fine a few cramps, but after 6 months I started to expirence a fowl Oder and did not have health insurance at the time. I tired the natural route via yogurt tampons and so on. When I got a new one at 25 (forgot to mention never had children) I did get a yeast infection which I called into my doctor and she wrote me a prescription. But now after 4 and 1/2 months after getting my new Mirena, my boyfriend and I were having sex and we both noticed a fowl Smell that smelled like crab meat. Which before when I had smell from my first round of Mirena was fishy. I did wear a thong that night and maybe think that is the problem. Just saying that I love the fact with Mirena I don't have to worry about my migraines or a pill. But is it really worth the side affects??????? HELP
