Unpleasant Vaginal odor, could it be my IUD?

Hey guys, i just recently got the copper IUD put in and immediatly i got this nasty, poop smelling oder that makes so uncomfortable around my partner. I have been pushing him away and i took pills for 7 days twice a day. Im not sure what to do. It has gotten better but not fully gone. The discharge is a light brown/dark brown and the smell only happens when the discharge comes out. ughhh this is embarassing :/

Hello Ladies, I am so glad that I found this forum because I've been having this same issue...and like many of you, I never had any issues with vaginal odors until I got my IUD about 6 months ago, and mine is the Copper.  I figured that it was the IUD becausI don't have any other symptoms except the smell, which is like a rotten, fishy smell...It is soooo foul that I've become very paranoid about it, and also worry that others can smel it, especially at work.  I've noticed that it's worst right after my period, and close to my period.  I've tried using scented pantyliners, using deodant on the outside of my underwear, and using the feminine sprays, but I feel like I can still smell it...I got desperate and started douching which is something I swore that I would never do....but at this point I'm desperate and a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do.  Unfortunately I can't take it out because I'm not allowed to get pregnant again, and it's the most convenient form of birth control.  But the really have to do some research figure out why this is happening because it's affecting our quality of life.

I had something similar. If it doesn't go away in a few months I would suggest getting it removed. My copper IUD worked for about 18 months. Then I started to have long long periods among other things. I was becoming anemic. So out it came. No choice and I was glad.

I have same problem since I got the IUD, to the point that my husband don't want sex with me anymore

I have had my copper iud in for almost 10 years now. It's coming out soon and I'm not getting another one. I love the fact that I don't have to worry about getting pregnant but it just creates a whole nother slew of problems. I don't know how many times I've been on antibiotics to get rid of the smell. I would be smell free as long as I was on them but as soon as I stop the regiment it comes back again. I'm glad I found this forum. I thought it was just me and I smelled bad. I always have this amonia smell and it's on my clothes and even after I wash my underrwear I can still smell it. My periods sm,ell like rotten meat and sometimes the cramping is as stong as labour pangs. After sex it smells like rotten cheese. I won't let my partner go down on me and haven't engaged in oral sex in like five years. I was looking into my options for birth control as there have been many advances in the last ten years, also the life of my iud is comiong to an end, when i found this forum. I'm not getting another one. My partner wants me to but i asked him how he would like to walk around with a smelly box. So I don't know what form of birth control I'm going to use yet. I've been thinking about getting fixed as I have a 14 year old son but I'm only 33, I don't really know if I want another child or not. I really don't want to use hormones. Anyone have any experience with sponges or spermicide. I was thinking of that. I know it's a little old fashion but.....

Are you in any pain? If you are it sound like the iud may have pierced through to the rectom. Better get checked out

Hi, I had the copper iud and I bled so heavily that I became severely anemic and ended needing iron infusions. My hematologist told me to have it removed immediately. The plastic one is causing an odor and thick discharge. I'm just tired of this. I don't want to have anymore children, I don't want to take the pill and I'm not doing the shots again. So what am I to do?

I am so thankful that I found this site as it puts ease to all my fears! I have had the IUD twice in my life. The first time I had it after my second daugther there were no complications and I only had it removed because the 5 year mark to get it replaced was due. I did not get another one until after my last child in January 2010. I have been having horrible complications with this device even though its the same copper IUD I previously had. The first few months were a complete disaster and I bled that much that I ended up in the ER on 4 separate occasions in fear I would bleed to death. I am not even exaggerating, at times I wore diapers instead of pads it got that bad. Since it was inserted 2 years ago, I have had 4 yeast infections, BV twice and now for the past 3 or more months I am having this rotten disgusting smell that is just making life so uncomfortable. I am always thinking others can smell me because I can smell it myself. My son actually sat in my arms the other day while we were in public and looked back at me and told me I stink! It was embarassing!I couldn't describe what the smell was until I read these post about it smelling like spoiled meat and that is exactly it. Its like opening a package of sandwich meat that has been outdated for a year! I really was begining to think I was rotting from the inside out until I came to this site. So my next step is to get it removed. I spoke with my doc yesterday and she could not figrue out what was causing this type of smell considering most vaginal inffections are either fishy smelling or yeasty. I have had pap tests, numerous swabs and nothing ever shows up. I have been mad at my husband for months because I had myself convinced he was cheating on me and gave me a disease and now I feel so BAD! For all you sufferers out there, one thing I did that controls the smell for a couple days is to douche in 1 part apple cider vinegar and 3 parts water. You can also soak a tampon and use that to keep it bay for a bit. However this has only proven to be temporary for me and there is no question or doubt that will prevent me from getting this out tomorrow! I may end up becoming pregnant again but I would almost rather deal with that then have to smell like this! Good luck everyone!!!

Thank baby Jesus I found this site. I too went on a vacation with my friends the next day took a normal shower l cleaned every nook n cranny of my body. I was play in pool with my guy friend n had these other ppl move when I walked away I could see their face in disgust. Was it me? I let it pass then was talking to my guy friend and got up to give him a hug when the strong order sourounded us.. I was mortified!!! He said did u just fart ewww girl fart. I tried to play it off. I know I didn't pass gas. We got home n I immediately went to the restroom changed my panties washed my cookie and put a pad on just incase. About an hour later the smell was back and this time I was around a group of friends. Same reaction as before "Damn who keeps letting them rip" I'm getting my iud removed this week. So embarrassing. I've had it since Feb of last year. Not worth the public embarrassment. :( I'd rather have the pain of a shot or not be sexual active then to be the smelly girl. 

You can see about the implanion it is an implant that goes in arm, it may work better only thing is it only lasts 3 yrs

Get rid of the IUD. Odor almost instantly is gone upon removal. Unfortunate side effect of an IUD.

Get rid of the IUD. Unfortunately a side effect that has no cure. Odor was gone almost immediately upon removal of mine. I experienced the same problem. Tested for BV. Always negative. Rephfresh didnt work. Douche didnt work.

It's most likely just BV, which is very common. All you need is a prescription for flagyl, or, if you just want to get it at a store you can do the homeopathic version of this medication which is actually inserted into the vaginal canal. Either way works, I actually did both at the same time, worked like a charm and smell didn't return afterwards.

Get an abrasion.

Im not trying to be rude nor offend anyone but that iud smell isnt pleasant. My girlfriend has one and I dont say anything because I dont want to hurt her feelings. Im just telling you ladies because your significant others probably are like me and dont want to hurt your feelings. I advise you ladies to try some other form or birth control. I hope my girlfriend comes on here and reads this.
