I have the copper one and have to same odor problem so don't get it thinking that's the difference. I think it's just having something IN your vagina makes you susceptible to this problem. It's unnatural and I think this odor is prob from bacteria on the "string" that is coming Ito the vagina from the uterus. I think I'm getting mine taken out because I NEVER had this problem before and have had it EVER SINCE I got this put in a year ago. I hate it.

Well I am happy I googled this I've had my IUD in for 7 weeks now and I too have noticed the funny smell so after coming on here and reading what others had said I felt at lot better and didnt feel so alone.
I went to the doctors today for help with cough and at the same time I asked him about the smell and told him what i had read on here. He said to me that I had been reading the right stuff and said it sounds like bv and its all to do with the ph levels he has given me metrdizol in a applicator I am to use it for 5 day if its no better then I am to go back and he will take a swap. Its always best to get this looked at then you will know for sure. I will let you know how I get on.

I had the copper iud put in last year and noticed  really disgusting smell, I treated for infections but the smell persisted. It got so bad that I was getting really self conscious and my sex drive plummited. I did everything I could to fix it and took the rephresh pills and nothing helped.

I took my IUD out 2 days ago and the smell disappeared. It was 100 percent because of the IUD.

Now everything is back to normal and I feel 1000 times better.

I also had the same issue! Watery discharge with a horrible smell. I had mine out and it instantly went away. I was also having ovarian cysts rupture. Horrible cramps, depression mood swings. Insomnia and appetite increase. Weight gain and lose of my normally very high sex drive.

The smell made me so uncomfortable when i was having sex but after taking a bath with baking soda am glad is not there anymore. i dont know how long it will last but i hope it last for good!

I had the Paragard IUD inserted and immediately started releasing thick smelly discharge. I read this forum and tried most of the remidies listed herein, ivory soap only, no douching, douching with vinigar, I finally started wearing a tampon every day to combat the smell. I went to the doctor to have it removed and the nurse advised that I must have an infection or std because she'd never heard of this side effect. I got tested again, despite having a completely clean test result the day the IUD was inserted. Turns out I had Bacterial Vaginosis. It's not the IUD that smells, however the IUD makes you susceptible to BV which does smell. Removing the IUD usually cures the BV and the smell goes away, or you can cure the BV using antibiotics and keep the IUD. I'm unsure as to how often I can expect the BV to return, if it get it more than twice a year I will just have the IUD removed, but for now I'm happy.

Start from a place of genuine concern.... "Babe, I saw this crazy program on the TV about the side effects of the IUD. I know you have one so I was concerned and researched it further (print out this forum and leave it for her to read). Are you having any of these issues? I also read it causes breast cancer, I think you should get it removed." Offering to wear condoms is a good measure on your part, don't leave her stuck with choosing between the IUD and pill, she'll chose the IUD for sure.
