I have tried using 'RePresh' and have had good results. It's an antibacterial odor fighting gel. I used it about once a month at the heigh of the scent, which seems to be around the time I would be having a period 'the cramping and lower back pain without the blood'.

I can definitely relate. Im thankful for you ladies sharing your stories. I have had my Mirena IUD in for almost 8 months. I have never noticed this odor before yesterday. I had a very light period over the past few days. When the bleeding went from light flow down to discharge, I noticed a strong odor. I changed my jeans and panties and put on a pantiliner but the odor persisted through the next set of clothes too! I went in to work today and continued to smell it! I couldnt believe it was me. I even smelled my office chair just to be sure. Sure enough, it was me. Horrible. I can't stand it. I was self conscious all day as coworkers came up close to me and while I sat through meetings. I am definitely going to make a doctor appointment to let them know. I have light cramping too and I worry that I might have an intrauterine infection or cysts as a result of the IUD. Ill post an update when I find out more.

Hello all- I have had all the symptoms that most of you are describing. I had IUD paraguard and the last 3 years of my life has been HELL. From terribly bad menstral cramps to a terrible odor. I'm a clean person and couldn't understand the horrific smell. Since I removed the IUD no odor no cramps!

I had the copper IUD a few years ago. I had such heavy periods (Niagara Falls) and crazy bad cramp (almost on the floor in pain). The ordour was so unbearable that my hubby complained about it, I ended up pulling it out myself. Everything cleared up on it's own after. June of this year I ended up getting the Mirena, it's better but starting to get the slight ordour (Not as bad as the copper)

Hi Girls, Thank you I've been going insane with the issues down there I'm a very clean person, and about a year ago I kept getting a horrible smell, and like most of you questioned a sti but nothing even my period smells offensive it's worse after sex and to be honest destroyed my last relationship because I was so embarrassed, some times at work I can smell it I get very paranoid and it's actually starting to really affect me so after reading all your info, think I will get it removed xx

I got my IUD taken out after everything else I did to make the smells go away, didn't work and a DAY later...the smell was gone. I have been IUD free for 3 years now and the smell have never been back. It was 1000% the IUD.

I also have the copper IUD the Paragard and I have had it for about three and a half years and I too have been having the same problems with the smell it's nothing to do with any bacteria itching burning nothing like that its just the odor and I too AM ashamed for my husband to be around to smell it because I smell it I thank you ladies for sharing your stories because I do believe that it is the IUD and it has been going on for about five to six months I can not go to the doctor and let him know that I believe that is my IUD.

I'm almost 26 years old. I had the Mirena inserted 6 weeks after I delivered my son, March 2012. I had it for 2 years without any problems. Around New Year's 2014, I started noticing the terrible odor. I honestly thought my ex had given me an STD, but after a visit to the local health department, I had to cross that off my list of potential reasons. I stopped wearing underwear, as that seemed to trap the smell and make it worse. It was putrid- Kind of a chemical smell. Definitely not a natural smell. I had never had problems in the past with odor and it was extremely embarrassing. I finally got my Mirena out in December 2015. I am EXTREMELY happy to report that the smell is totally gone! I am back to my normal self. I did experience some serious emotional withdrawal type symptoms for about 2 weeks after I had it removed. Some vomiting/nausea the day immediately after removal and some serious mood swings/grumpiness, but I have since mellowed out. I noticed some other threads about this on different websites talking about 'coming out of a fog'... I totally understand what they mean now. I seem to be thinking clearer and am happier than I have been in a long time.
It's very disturbing to me that neither of the doctors I visited for insertion/removal mentioned these type of side effects. I was never told about odor, random back pain or excessive acne before insertion AND I was never talked to about the 'Mirena Crash' or withdrawal type symptoms that are common after removal. This needs to be remedied... I would have thought twice about getting an IUD if I had known I would potentially feel gross or unwanted because of my body's chemical changes. I have seen comments on here & other websites where women have said the odor issue ruined their relationships & marriages. I feel for them and will NEVER recommend Mirena or another IUD to another woman, EVER. It's not worth the convenience. I'd rather have this annoying alarm on my phone every day to remember to take my pill.

A few months after having the Mirena IUD put in I noticed a smell that reminded me of baby poop however it was a faint smell. Now oh now, this smell can light up an entire room I have It in for a year and a half now. I have had the same partner for 2 years and since getting the IUD, I have been diagnosed with BV about 5 times. I got sick and tired of going back and forth to the Dr. For the same damn thing. The smell is horrid. It smells like a sewer if you ask me just rotten. My boyfriend thinks he's a comedian and makes jokes about it all the time so it hasn't stopped him from getting the goods but it drives me insane. There are times where everything is good but when its bad it is bad. I actually used to think it was him because he isn't circumcised but after reading this forum I know for sure its the birth control. I do believe him not being circumcised doesn't help one bit though. I wash constantly and I use deodorant spray over my underwear. I figured there has to be a way to help myself without going to the doctor so much because I mean it is embarrassing! I'm self concious in public and at home. It has taken over my life. So I did some looking and I found home remedies that work. Maybe twice a week I douche with apple cider vinegar and distilled water. That works wonders. I also take probiotic pills on a regular and I put one up there once a month. That only helps when the smell begins to return or when it's really bad I put one in after the vinegar douche each day until the smell and discharge are gone. I wish I could take the damn thing out myself some days but I'm not ready for children so I'm trying with it but I dont know how much longer I can take it. I haven't gotten any other side affects. As if all the problems we women have to face day by day isn't enough.

I got the smell worse than ever the other day then I started to spot. Even 1 1/2 year after having the Mirena, I am still bleeding. Maybe the peak time for the smell is when you're suppose to get your menstrual? IDK but this is just gross for anyone to go through and smell. There are times after intercourse where I MUST spray with Lysol! It's horrid

Hello all!
I'm so relieved to see that it's not 'just me' who is going my through this. My Mirena coil worked perfectly at first. No periods, no pain. Then in about the last year, my bits and pieces have had the WORST odour. Some days it's a musty waft, other days it's a mind blowing stink of urine! I shower twice daily and am SUPER sensitive about hygiene but this smell is so persistent that even washing (carefully of course) won't shift it. Sex has become a painstakingly planned out procedure as I have to make sure I'm 'smelling fresh' before any fun can begin, and you can just FORGET about a quick, unplanned bonk of an afternoon. Very depressing and frustrating as apart from this 'fishy' issue, the Mirena has suited me well when other methods didn't. I don't have a weak bladder so it MUST be the coil causing the honk. GP tests for various infections an BV have come up clear too. I don't know about you girls, but I feel almost digusted with myself for having such a smelly snatch. It's not right! I'll be booking an appointment in the morning to get this thing out and hopefully get myself a better (and less pungent) alternative. Peace out!
