i have the paragard for about a year now. so convenient. horrible cramping the first 10 months every month at my period time but the past couple of months that particular issue is subsiding thank goodness. my body must be finally adjusting to the fact that this IUD is not going away.
The smell. Is very offensive during my cycle. Smells like something rotten. Douching only solves the problem temporarily as I believe this issue must be the copper reacting with the blood. But when I do decide to douche (after sex and during my cycle) I use 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 10 parts water. Does the trick. probably not that great for the vagina on an ongoing basis so.... other tactics are taking Rephresh which I'm not convinced is helping.
Trying to keep the uterus flushed and healthy from the inside out.
I drink one glass of water with Braggs vinegar / raw honey each day. Then a cup of red raspberry leaf and red clover tea each day.
Hoping that keeping up this regiment will alleviate the odor.
I hate to give up on the IUD - the only other non-hormonal options are No Sex (sad face) or having my tubes tied and I'm terrified of the potential bad side effects of that.
Any other herbal suggestions out ttere for uterine health?

Don't douche or use any fragrances in your vagina!! How has your gynecologist not told you this?! Your vagina has all the tools it needs to keep healthy stuff flowing to flush out the bad. Clean your clam with water and a fragrance free soap. For the love of God don't stick anything in there that will throw off the delicate balance! Consume sweet smelling fruits and other naturally sweet foods. I actually make a daily smoothie with lots of good stuff in it but specifically use fruit, like strawberry, watermelon and mango, to keep my peach smelling sweet. Do also take a daily probiotic. If the odor is consistently strong and foul smelling then you could have BV, which is common and easily cured with a prescription. Either way, the minute you are concerned about your vaginal health, you should schedule an appointment with your gynecologist. There's way too much bad information on the internet.

I thought all this time it was me dealing with this alone and finally it occurred to me, could it be my IUD (copper para guard) & reading everyone's post it now makes sense that there is a correlation with the odor and now I can seriously consider removing my IUD

I am so happy I found you all! Sucks that we're going through this, but glad to know I'm not the only person enduring it. My story echoes in many of the stories told here- was thinking of questioning my husband, paranoid that others smell, self conscious in front of my husband. . . Luckily I was able to get at doc appointment Friday. I'll report back. I'm on Skyla, btw.

Hi everyone,

I've had the copper iud for 1 year and 11 months. I started smelling odor within a few months of having it and went to my general doc for it. She couldn't find anything. Sent me home and told me it's just normal smell. I left it alone and after 1 year, it got so bad that I could smell it through my clothes so I went back and insisted on seeing a gynecologist.

Finally saw gynecologist and she did ultrasound, urine, and swab test with negative results. I wanted to take out the iud but the doc didn't want me to so she did a deeper swab to see if I have actinomyces. She truly thought it was my diet and the final test was just to prove I was wrong.

Turns out I do have it. It's not a common case but it does occur with iud for some.

It was taken out right away via emergency and I have to take antibiotics right now.

My symptoms were: yellow green discharge. Strong ammonia/fish smell 24/7. Constant discharges. My panties would be soaked with the discharge if I don't wear pantilners.

I didn't have pain, itching, burning or cramps. Nothing other than the crazy smell. It drove my hubby and I nuts.

I hope this helps someone out there..Just ask your doctor to test for this bacteria. It lives in the fallopian tube and other body cavities.

Hello. I used the paragard IUD for about one year. The menstrual cramping brought me to.my knees each month, excessive bleeding, spotting throughout the month, constant PMS symptoms, fatigue, and the most atrocious foul odor emanating from my hoo hoo. As the months progressed the cramping decreased but the unfortunately the other side effects remained. I attempted to rid the odor with a variety of things - douching with water, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide - none did the truck. I used RepHresh. I drank red raspberry leaf tea. Nothing helped. The pros of this IUD was the convenience - I am very disappointed that the side effects were so great. I had the IUD removed yesterday and I already feel better. The smell, spotting, fatigue have disappeared. There are some really lucky women out there who have success with this birth control - it's a great product for some unfortunately I wasn't one of them. Glad I gave it a shot. :-)

Hello everyone,

I have had the coil for about 8-9 months and I have just taken a tampon out, after ANOTHER heavy bleed. I have been pregnant before and i like the convenience that the coil gives me. Anyway, THE SMELL from the tampon, is well, INDESCRIBABLE. Im actually just shocked. it f**king stinks- worse smell ever, IT WAS ONLY put in 3 HOURS ago. i have done some research and I'm thinking I have BV. i have been smelling like this for while, just after my last period- about 2-3 weeks ago (more regular coz of coil)
gunna give my copper IUD another 3 months then its out and ill get an implant.
so glad its not just me with this issue.
Antibiotics for me. GREAT.

Ive also heard it doesn't always get rid of the bv straight away.

Not to raise a touchy subject, but does your husband practice proper hygiene down there?  Because it is easy for a man to transfer bacteria to his partner via a sexual act.  This can be the cause of odors or even an infection.  I used to battle bacteria down there, but I began a strict daily cleaning regimen that included soap and water and a penis health creme that contains Vitamin A.  Now the bacteria are on the run, and my penis is cleaner and better-smelling that it has even been.  Hope this helps and good luck.
