My girlfriend had a surgical abortion 6 weeks ago. She started taking the pill the sunday after her abortion as was recommended by her doctor and has had her first period. The people at the clinic told her she should wait 6 weeks, and by then she will not be at risk for getting pregnant again if she is on the pill. However she talked to her mother and called the clinic back, and they told her something different. To be honest I could not get the full idea of what they told her. Now both of us are confused.

We are both healthy, and STD free. We love and care for each other greatly and would like to be able to have unprotected sex. Originally we were just using condoms and obviously one failed. My question is when is it safe for us to have unprotected sex again with her being on the pill? She was told that after an abortion she is at a higher risk of getting pregnant again until her body returns to normal. She is very responsible and has not missed her pill once since she started taking it.

We are both very confused and I don't want to rush anything and get into trouble all over again.

Any help would be great.

Just to be on the safe side, you and your girlfriend should wait at least 3 weeks after having a surgical abortion to have sex. Not just to prevent her from getting pregnant again, but moreso to avoid any kind of infection. As far as unprotected sex goes, its not such a great idea unless you're both willing to go through the same thing again or have a baby. Birth control is effective, but not 100%. Trust me, I've seen many people get pregnant while taking birth control. If you've been using condoms and aren't allergic and don't mind them, stick to it. At least until you're ready to have a baby. You can also try other forms of birth control in addition to the pill. If you don't like the way condoms feel or you want a more natural feel, have your girlfriend try vaginal film which is kind of like a condom for women. If you choose not to use either, maybe try a lubricant with soermicide to reduce the risk of unplanned pregnancy that much more.

Hope this helps.

Best of luck to both of you.
