It always happens when I get into the car as a passenger. The pain is a level 10. I start to feel panicky, and have to get out of the car as fast as I can. I get a claustropobic feeling. I panic which doesn't help. It's so painful.

I have been having this happen ever since I had my galbladder out. Best way to describe is a charlie horse on the right side below my breastfeeding at the bottom of my rib cage. The whole muscle seizes up and HURTS! I've always said it feels like a charlie horse in my mid abdominal area. Happens when I am on my horse getting on or sudden movements. Nobody seems to know the cause.

I have this same problem, immobilizing, sharp, pain under my right rib cage in my stomach muscle, just as everyone else is describing. When the muscle tightens and the sharp pain begins I can actually feel my stomach area bulging out, as someone else said in this article "as if an alien is trying to get out of my stomach". The pain usually has me immobilized for at 1 to 3 minutes. This pain started after I had my son through a c section, I was 34, and am now 52. I've always thought they left something inside me after the surgery, who knows maybe they did. When I first began to get the shooting pain it wasn't as bad as it is now, and would subside quickly, now the pain last longer and is immobilizing. This sharp spasms occur when I bend or tighten my stomach muscle for whatever reason. I would think that with as many of us going through this there would be some (REAL Medical) solution.

I've had these cramps for nearly ten years now. They started after I had surgery for a collapsed lung. I also get what I can only describe as electric shock pains which start at the operation scar, that then shoots round into my muscles and causes the spasms. I also have surface pain or 'altered sensations' (feels like spiders crawling across my skin, followed by a burning sensation with pins and needles) in the same area. I'm seeing a pain specialist and he tells me all this is due to nerve damage (the nerves were cut during the surgery). I've had nerve block injections, tried several different pain relief meds and even had a spinal cord nerve stimulator fitted - nothing helps. I've now been told I will just have to live with it, I use morphine patches but they only help slightly with the constant surface pain.

Maybe some of you guys have nerve damage which could be causing the spasms? Cou,d be that the nerve block injections might work for some of you. I have heard that they have helped others - wish they had helped me.

I had this happen too ! I had it first, after a bad cold/flu. The first time (this bout) it happened just before I got kidney stones They have mostly past, took antibiotics to help, then a horrific pain like described here All I could do was drop down arched my back till it subsided. then i would move and it would happen again So I got up and walked to get a glass of water. It did sort of feel like a side cramp in my solar plex !! I am writing this to see if all or most are women because I almost feel like it also had to do with the bra I was wearing. Now I have had my gall bladder removed yrs ago and the bra normally does not bother me I am also wondering it maybe it has to do with infection someone mentioned above their dr said it could be, so I also got a second round of Cipro just in case stones get bad again !

Hi I'm having the same issues as you. My pain starts right under my boobs like my rib cage and feels like a squeezing pain hurts so bad sends me to tears and to the ER most of the time. It starts in the upper front and then will end up going around to my back same location until it passes. Usually comes on when I first lay down flat. They thought it was my gallbladder so I had that out last week but just had another attack last night. I just don't know what to do. Have you found anything else out yet?

I agree that sometimes it is due to dehydration and being low in potassium but sometimes it is also due to low magnesium as well. When I have these bouts I drink more water, and take supplements for both. It sometimes takes 30 minutes or better for the pain to subside but it keeps them from coming back.

I get this alot. and like everyone else bending over from a sitting position. Not sure what it is. I have an appointment with my doc on 8/1. Going to ask her. I also get this sometimes while laying in bed and stretching the wrong way. I still have my gallbladder so I don't think it is related to that. at one time the doc had me on a diureratic medication. And it only got super worse. I don't drink much water. But I would think if it is is related to dehydration, then it wouldn't only one location. If i find out any causes I'll post them.

77, Disabled Vet. Had I lower right lateral hernia operation in Spokane VA Hosp. It was mighty painful, like nothing I ever remembered. Reparied and to my knowledge it is holding together. Past year or so and getting worse with each episode wicked knock me down "spasm", "cramps" emanating just below my right and left rib cage. . Wanna see a grown man cry catch me in an episode. Happens more than several times per month (like 6_7) Hurts so very bad I actually want to go to hospital. My VA provider seemed to think I was exagerating. I now am a Vets Choice paient with my civilian internist near by. First visit 2 weeks ago. Registration on pain at time. Tried to describe it and he palpated both sides, tender but no tornado inside. "Keep me posted" . I am hoping that a solution results. If this occurs while I am driving it could be a disaster. So for the only treatment I have rec'd is "words" no solution, at least not from Mt Home VA, TN. I too am glad I found this site I just had a crippling episode, it eased and I am now typing this. Iwish all of us luch in getting a palatable painless resolutiom. I would use medical marijuana if it were legal in North Caolina...it ain't. I came here from Salem Oregon where I was licensed for Medical Marijuana. That actually worked well durin a spamam. But dont drink nor smoke when ya drive. Thats a death warrant.
