I had a tummy tuck about 3 months ago... My doctor told me he would not perform liposuction on my upper stomach because of healing reasons... I guess when they liposuct your your whole stomach on top of a tummy tuck is to much trauma for the belly and by not liposucting th upper belly is giving your stomach a better healing process then if you would get lipo on the upper belly. SO, There still will be fat stored on that area, also you have to keep in ming that the upper area is smaller then the lower so when they tighten the muscles and there is is fat in the area it will make that part bulgier.
Maybe you didnt get lipo in that area???

I had my TT 7 years ago and I was 110 lbs at that time had the TT b/c of 3 ceasearan section cut vertically and didnt like the scar. Well weight gain came along with age and my entire physical shape changed. I dont even look like myself. Right now I am at a weight that I was long ago and I think I looked much better prior to the TT. I have been working out at the gym 4 X wk for 4 years and have developed great muscles all over. If if wasnt for my upper ab bulge, which is totally embarassing what happens is that the fat gets displaced. Your fat and weight gain accumulates above your TT incision. Wow, ya think the surgeons would clue you in on that. If I would have known this I would have NEVER had the surgery, and not too mention the 2 drains scars to look at. I think the most difficult part is feeling so uncomfortable, upper abs distension, and most of the time my skin and abdomen hurt. I feel deformed and I paid a lot of $$$$$$ for that. Im concerned about this upper ab bulge fat lying over my organs, not thinking belly fat is good for over all health.

I had a TT a year ago and immediatly noticed the upper belly bulge. I do yoga and it is very uncomfortable laying on my stomach and if I eat anything it becomes even more distended...Horrible...no never like that before. Unfortunatly another thing is that my lower stomach is distended also. I can't hold my stomach in at all. It is huge like I am pregnant. My muscles have been damaged and are dead and don't hold my stomach in at all. This is only after the TT before I had great stomach muscles but loose skin from twins. Now I look very pregnant or like someone that just ate the kitchen sink and then some. Oh my back is now rounding I have to work to stand up straight.......... HORRIBLE. Back pain, and very uncomforable feeling with the abdomine area. Like you are always stuffed.
Oh my life style has diminished drastically.
Any help would be appreiciated.

Mine is exactly the same symptons as yours (I'm female though) I haven't put on any weight like the other posters but have LOST weight, so the theory of dieting is not the answer. Sometimes when I'm sitting if I laugh at something, quite a hearty laugh though, then it is like an excruciating pain which can only be lulled by standing up. I'm very disappointed and wish I'd never had the TT done now (around 3 yrs ago I had the op)

I had a tt seven and a half years ago after my third child. I was 34 years old. Since then my weight fluctuated up and down appx 35 pounds. My upper stomache did not distend as much as my waistline did. Even when my weight was down my waistline wouldn't go down. I was apple shaped. Summer of 2008 I decided i would try liposuction on my waist. That went fine but now i have what everybody else here is talking about. My upper ab area is bulging and hard right above the naval. It is bulging more on the right then the left. It looks lumpy. The surgeon did do some lipo in the area above my naval because he thought it needed it. I wonder if these are fat pockets and if they will they will go away with weight loss?

Okay I am going to take a shot at an answer on this one. I am a scientist, rather than a doctor, but I have also had a tummy tuck a few years ago and felt I had the same problem.

From the science aspect, the lower abdominoplasty generally tightens skin on the lower abdomen and can be combined with liposuction. Neither of these treatments address the upper body fat. Its my opinion that with tighter skin on the lower abdomen, fat has more room to spread upwards than downwards.

From the appearance aspect, I recommend checking with a tape measure. I checked my measurements and my upper abdomen hasn't increased in any way, it just looks that way because the lower abdomen is smaller. I would check and see if liposuction on the upper body is a possibility.

HERE IS SOME HELPFUL ADVISE: I have read all of the concerns about the distort upper stomach after getting a TT.
I had my TT about 3 years ago: I also had the distorted upper tummy, and I also had gained weight after my TT, and I also had started seeing signs of IBS.
I have gotten rid of 90% of all of those problems by: getting my weight down 10 lbs less then what I was at the time of my surgery. I went on the South Beach Diet, (carbs bloat the tummy area so this is a GREAT DIET) and saw immediate reduction of the distorted upper tummy in about 2 weeks. I stayed on Phase 1&2 (most strict with how much carbs you eat) -- and only eat very little portions if I choose to go astray of the diet for a treat or a holiday.....then hop back on it as the mainstream. I am just now starting to exercise the upper tummy area too.
The PS did however leave me with uneven sized breast, and now they're not symetrical.....so -- I am very happy with my TT -- just not the Breast that I had done at the time time !
I hope this helps someone !!

Good luck to you ALL !!!

I, too, am glad to have discovered this thread. Abdominoplasty (FULL, not a 'mini') 5 yrs ago. I have gained 40 lbs in last 2 years; stopped smoking & med (dr d/c'd 3wks ago, TG!). Thought distention/herniation may have been caused by belly button piercing, but read tonight piercing ok. Started great gym and attend classes 1or 2 hrs a day (yes, honestly!). Instructors say 'ab check' often. Upper 'ab very hard to suck in. Feel like they're talking directly to me! Very flat lwr abs then, at waist pooch out. Yuk!

I have a TERRIBLE bulge above belly buttion - up to just under my breats. Mini TT was in May '09, so 7 months post op now. It is AWFUL and I am always uncomfortable and I wish I had never done it. Weight is the same, give or take 4 pounds here and there. I am SO unhappy with it. Yes, my lower tummy is better - but DON'T DO A TUMMY TUCK UNLESS YOU READ AND GET ALL OF THE POSTS ON THIS BOARD ~ it's very likely this can happen.

Feel free to

I am astonished to read all of this! I thought it was just me. How is it this was never mentioned by my doctor?? Truly let's you know that it was a "sales job" selling the dream of a beautiful tummy again. I wish I'd just been happy with what I had, and realized that it was a beautiful reminder of having children. Now, I have this bulging football-shaped lump above my belly button, which has completely taken away the flat stomach I used to have. I almost feel pregnant, and I only weigh 118! If you are considering a tummy tuck, really think about this: when lower fat cells are gone and the body needs a certain percentage of fat to support it, where will the fat make up the difference?? It goes somewhere, and probably not where you want it!!

I had my tt in 2006 and finally after many years of having a big stomach, I now have a flat stomach - a flat LOWER stomach. Between my breasts and my belly button has blown up since my tt. I never used to be big in this area but since my tt, I'm bigger here than I ever was in my lower stomach area. Has anyone experienced this problem, and if so, any suggestions to get the upper stomach just as flat as the lower stomach?

I had a tummy tuck 4 months ago and was loving the look, but recently started getting a bulge around my waist. I work out 5 days a week and do heavy cardio. I am mid 40;s but this does not seem right, I am wondering if lipo will cure it, but supposedly they did lipo during my surgery. Has anyone tried this? Crazy to spend so much money and to now be getting the "roll" back.

I used to have a small waist inspite of the baby pouch but now my actual waist is now bigger than it was before the surgery and my shape is completely differefent!!! My husband thinks I am imagining this!!! >;)
